Black Markets are part of economics not exceptions to it. Black Markets follow Economic Theory quite well, they often exist when government regulation messes with Demand for a product or service. For Example one of the largest black markets in New York State is Unpasteurized Milk, not that isn't slang for anything, it is Cows Milk that hasn't been threw the Pasteurizing or Homogenization process, people will pay a lot more for this because there is a limited supply and they can only get it threw the Black Market. However the price isn't too expensive as if it cost to much they will go with the "Lesser" legal alternatives, or find a dealer who will sell milk for less.
I think is is more of an issue that Microsoft has their own (DirectX/Silverlight) system that has the same security conserns. And they are saying Open Standard is Bad while ours is good.
No you are statically safer with a cloud then your IT Staff. But you need to be smart and not just go with the lowest bidder. You also need to balance what to cloud and what to do in house. A Cloud is good for those services that your IT Staff gets bogged down with. Where you can use them for more profitable usages. Sure it sounds vague because this is different for every organization.
Eg. A small company may use a cloud to host some of their apps, so their IT people can focus on maintaining their apps and improving it and not wast time trying to make themselves experts in keeping the Host OS running safely. And a lot of IT people think they are good at security but they are not. You might as well go with a cloud service where people are more actively involved in keeping your system safe and secure and GET A CONTRACT that makes sure if there is a problem you get compensated for it.
When working with a cloud system I wish I can stress this GET A CONTRACT, GET A CONTRACT, and MAKE SURE YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS AND THERE IS ADVANTAGES TO YOU!!! Cloud computing isn't bad, but if your management is stupid so will your cloud solution will be. But if your management is stupid so will your own IT Projects too... But if there is a problem you will get blamed.
There are benefits to cloud computing, but you can't be stupid and just write a check, You need to do research to see if they actually do what you want them to do, do they have a good track record and is there an Exit strategy in place. You need to get other departments involved to make sure you have a solid contract with them and other stuff... If you are going to do this to end run around IT, that is stupid, and if you are going to rush it, that is even more stupid.
Well not really. Organized Crime grows but it doesn't reproduce well. If one does split it is often because there are some hot heads who think they can do it better, and takes resources away from the other. So we either get One Organization who is strong while the other is weak and will die off soon. Or both will be weaken and both would die off soon. Very Rarely would they split into 2 strong units.
However what could happen with all the small guys going away there is less competition for the big ones and then they can monopolize the market... FTC is kinda useless against Organized Crime.
But if they get too big it gets harder for them to operate without the law noticing and makes it easier for law to bring them down.
It is a PATENT not a FEATURE. Being that it is a Patent doesn't mean the new iPhone will or will ever have such a feature built in. So if you want the new iPhone check to see if it is a feature yet. Don't just go all whacked out because Apple is holding a patent.
Except for bitching and complaining what a private company does with a product you choose to buy. You can usually check with the Freedom of Information act on what law enforcement is buying with your tax money. And raise hell if they are trying to stop you from such actions.
I agree but you need a balance to "Fair and Balanced" The problem there are so many people who just watch Fox news, as the other guys are all part of the big conspiracy to hide the truth, are missing the stuff that Fox news wants to try as hard as possible to ignore. Fox new is a tool of the Right Wing, it's media is slanted/warped to the right, You are not getting the whole picture but you are getting an other side of it.
1st. It would nice not to get a lawsuit for an innocent act, if the phone stopped you from doing it, you won't get in trouble for doing it.
2nt. It is a Patent not a Feature. How they use this patent is up to Apple. because of #1 I would be iffy if apple uses it, as it opened a wider can of worms, if the iPhone will stop you from doing an illegal act then who would be responsible for other illegal acts done by the phone... If Apple is going to be the guardian, then it may mean your safe. Apple may have no plan on using this feature, but they want the patent to prevent other from doing this, to make sure they done become better buddies with the recording industry then Apple is.
3rd.The Recording Industry can just as easy search you for recording devices before you enter, and if you have an approved device you can be let in.
I am concerned about security on a cloud service... Except for asking them to explain their security to you. I will download a tool without doing any security audit on it. Put it on my PC right under my desk and open a port to the outside world on my firewall. That way I feel a lot safer.
On the whole you are better off with cloud services. The key disadvantage is if it goes down, a lot of people go down too.
Now Cloud isn't perfect for everyone once you reach a critical size it is probably cheaper and for you to move it in house. And when you go with a cloud service and you are going to invest a lot of money... Be sure you come up with a good Contract with them. Don't let them abuse you, you work with legal to get the correct contract, if they refuse you go to the next guy.
That may not be the headline, But that is how it seems. They cover the earthquake and the nuclear plant problems in the same story explaining the death counts all together.
Yes us Rural folks have a greater need for guns (and more "good" reason to shoot things). Although I don't own a Gun myself I could see the advantages to having one. In a City you have an armed police force close by. If there is a problem they can be there in 10 minutes. vs. in Rural areas where if there is a problem it could take a half and hour to an hour before they arrive. In the City large animals are not really a threat. In the country you get Bears, Moose and other aggressive animals who can cause damage to yourself, your family and your property.
Next Stealing a gun form a licensed hunter isn't really all that hard... Because there are very few if any (inspections) of the gun owners home, chances are many/most will not fully comply with laws. Because security isn't convenient. Unlicensed guns can be sold on the black market. If Mr. Johnson get a gun from his father who passed away, needs money to pay off estate taxes, sell off his old gun, and report it missing. There are so many ways to get guns into the black market.
I much rather see money going towards gun safety then to outlawing them. Because State/Federal laws on Gun control are insane. Even New York state has a huge Rural area, you know Upstate NY, that area West/North West of CT, MA, VT. A key part of the violence is due to the lack of respect for guns. And use it more of a tool, then a show of power.
The problem with digital is that you can duplicate your effort with near identical quality and mass produce it very cheaply.
Fair Use, is usually sharing information with a few people privately, aka watching a movie together. Or having a lip syncing contest with your friends. But what happens now is that with YouTube your private activity is now shared with thousands or millions of people.
Now the problem with copyright law isn't the action but the degree of punishment for violations of such problems. Things like lipsyncing on YouTube should be $50 fine. Not Thousands of dollars. For $50 your 12 year old will get punished and taught about copyright law. But the way the laws are now if you get Caught the 12 year old will suffer as the parents can't afford to properly feed them as they are paying off for an innocent mistake. Also for a $50 fine most companies wouldn't bother putting up a legal suit. As they will pay more then they will make.
While seeing your sarcasm in your statement. The problem goes beyond people abusing a law (AKA, I don't like person X or Group Y and I want to get them in trouble so I will sue them because they use or made some tool which may be commonly used for hacking, while their use for illegal activity is unproven). It is an issue that a tool made for hacking then gets reused as a productive tool in legal usages.
Secondly Illegal hacking (The bad kind) is well umm... Illegal, so these people wouldn't really be morally compromised to make an illegal tool to do an illegal job. It is like banning guns, then that means the only people with guns are the ones who are not afraid to break the law and obtain them, if they are unafraid to break the law then they are possible to break more laws, and with a gun they could be more effective in doing it. So all this law will do is just a sneaky way of increasing a sentence on a convicted hacker. or if found innocent of the original crime a second charge to go against them with. It is like getting 2 Ticket for going across a stop sign because 1 is for improper maintenance of your car, the second is for running a stop sign.
The trick to winning the argument is to get the person to think along the same lines you do... We really cannot break our emotional and logical thinking up into distinct areas. Some people tend to be more logical, others will be more emotional. But there will be elements of both in it. But if you need to win an argument if you can effect their emotional side you gain and advantage, as agreeing with you will feel good. If you effect their logical side, you may still win but they are not feeling good about it, and will still argue and fight until they feel good.
I was recently watching a documentary about the Carter vs. Reagan election. Even with the 20/20 hindsight of everything that went on and its action. My Logical side sees that Carter had a more logical direction, but Reagan painted a picture that made us feel better. And I bet if it happened again even with the 20/20 hindsight I think Reagan would sill win.
For Web Development a good IDE is actually quite useless. Unless you want your website to look obviously from your IDE your better off using standard text editors. I have had some forced time in an IDE where I needed it to make HTML, I had to spend twice as much time working around it to get stuff done. That said, a modern IDE is nice in terms that if you don't try to build your html visually, they often have JavaScript or the server side language development debugging. Notepad++ VIM or Emacs with the appropriate modules installed can work quite efficiently
What I would like to know... How many deaths worldwide happen because of Oil and Coal? And How many due to nuclear?
Is Nuclear safe? No, but it is a heck of a lot safer then coal and oil. The Hippy Energy Fuel sources... Solar... Getting better but still too expensive and takes up a lot of land and needs to be in the right locations. Wind... Not everywhere gets the right amount of wind. Hydroelectric... Needs to be near water... Dams kill fish. Tidal, Geothermal.... They need to be in the right spot.
Oil, Coal, Uranium can be shipped anywhere. Nuclear Power is a great choice for areas that cannot get other options. Fukushima while bad it isn't the big boom. The people so far who died from it are the ones who got killed by falling debris. Even if the cleanup crew has a long term effect... I bet if you process the numbers you will see Nuclear is still safer then Coal and Oil... But you have these stupid uneducated people and officials who need to get elected by these idiots. Who will let existing nuclear infrastructure rot until it is dangerous then make big presses about the evil of nuclear energy.
We need a smart nuclear strategy. Use other clean sources where you can. Use nuclear where there isn't better options. Keep the Nuclear plants up to date and up to code, make sure that they do, not just a bunch of laws, wait for the company to slack off then fine them to out of business, keep track what is going on, make the fixes when problems are small.
It is not as much as the Bad IT Guy gets promoted but the person with the better people skills does.
There are a lot of actually good successful IT people out there. They know their stuff and keep things going, But they also can put on a Tie, talk to others and explain their ideas better, and they go out of their way to show their success.
A good IT Person who is in the trenches while good at their job, but doesn't talk to management and sees them as the Evil overlord keeping them down, is well going to be kept down. They need to put their head out of the trenches document their success work on plans to reduce failures go to those optional meetings, and be useful in them. Otherwise the Bad IT Guy who spends all his time to write reports explaining why it isn't his fault will get notices just because he has a better set of documentation.
I have seen a lot of Good IT people who I wouldn't put up to promotion, Why? Things like, Not knowing the status of a project in a timely fashion (You don't know if they going on the right track or where they are in the process, making you worry that things are going to be delayed, and you won't know until the last minute, and when asked about the status you just get a good), or Getting too much detail on what they are doing (The opposite extreme, I do not need to know everything that goes on in your project, you are paid to think for yourself and do what you think is right, You do not need approval for every step... Also you drown out the information making it hard to find real problems because there is too much stuff to handle to see if you are actually following the specs). Needing to challenge everything, Does the manager really need to fight with you for every job, yea it may be stupid but it needs to get done. As Well just being a Yes Man, hey you are hired to tell me that something doesn't make sense or seems way off.
It depends on the control of the Union. Unions like every thing in life needs checks and balances. Large powerful Union vs. A mid sized organization will kill the organization by essentially making human resources department completely useless and ineffective. And will be as you say so many people making excuses not to work, except for coming for reasons to get new and exciting new jobs. Making slowly bleeding the company to its death, or needing life support (AKA Tax Payer funding)
A Week or non-existent untion vs. A large organization (who doesn't have to fear Unionization) will push the employees hard (often too hard) and hurt the employees. Knowing that employees it is hard for them to switch jobs, in this type of market.
We need Unions so Non-Unioned companies know to treat their employees well, just so they don't need to deal with them. But we need the Unions to know when to back off, a LOT OF COMPANIES TREAT THEIR EMPLOYEES FAIR with or without the Unions, as it is part of Good HR. And if a Union is there is needs to be sure it doesn't kill the company.
It is really a balance. It isn't as black and white as Unions are Good/Evil and Corporations are Evil/Good. It is a real mix.
I personally think Unions are in great need for reform. Made popular in the early 1900's where the US economy was based on towns and cities having very few career options (1 or 2 factories, and a bunch of Mom and Pop (who usually are self run and do not hire many people outside their families), and the people didn't have many options to travel to an other town. Making the Conservative Motto If you don't like your job then Quit, impractical because if they quit they in essence volunteer to be poor. Today things are different, I just recently switched my job because I didn't think I was getting a fair salary for my work, I had to drive to a different town to do it but it was easier. I didn't like what I was getting so I quit, and got a new job (not in that order) most people are expected to work at a company for 3-5 years before moving to an other job, it is new fact of life. Unions haven't really embraced this concept. Unions need to go away from micromanaging the companies HR and persons pay, and towards other issues, such as insuring the company doesn't move to a new location, that large scale layoffs are well planned in advanced, that when the companies outsources it is due to a real need, not trying to save a few bucks in the short term. As well they need to help the company grow and prosper. Its funding needs to be better then dues from members (making decisions to layoff skilled labor so they can hire twice as many unskilled Union Employees, so the Union will get more money) Without such reform Unions will continue their dying trend, as they keep putting Unioned Companies out of business or making doing business so uncompetive that they just move to a different country.
