How do you know if it is your local theater has the issue with poor 2d. The bad 3d is the movie makers fault. I remember liking Shrek 3d but hating Tron. But if the bad 2d is due to human error you probably should check to see if your local theater makes the mistake or not.
Also don't forget how good the human eye is at going past the glare. On My desk I have 2 older matted monitors and a glossy display on the laptop. After reading the article I needed to look back at the laptop to see if it had a glossy display or not. IT Pro has a general reader of people who will complain about all the new stuff and say how the old stuff was that much better and are usually annoyed when some technologies just die off because they are unpopular. Yes Glossy main advantage is that they make their product line on display look that much newer then matted, then there are the debatable about watching movies and pictures, vs documentation and stuff. Having worked with both all the time they really don't matter.
I don't have points today. I would mod you up if I did. Unfortunately to make iOS apps you need a Mac to do development. So iOS Developers will get macs to do their work. iOS apps are popular so companies will buy Macs.
Microsoft buys Skype. Linux users ditch Skype Microsoft sees very little Linux Skype usage so drops it from development. Linux user assert their fear that Microsoft will drop all Linux apps it purchases.
I would recommended that you use SSH/SFTP except for FTP FTP is one of those old standards made before people realized that they could sniff networks, and pull login names and passwords.
FTP and Telnet are one of those simple protocalls if you are woried about security, HTTPS, SSH and SFTP
I see a slow culture shift to Work, and Learn at home. It has many advantages. 1. Distance is not a barrier, companies can hire the best people for the job no matter where they are at. 2. Saves on Fuel. If you look at you school budgets #2 almost matching teachers salaries is transportation costs. And for you employees $4.00+ a gallon for gas out of your pocket costs you money. 3. Lower Company operation costs.
The fact that we put a lot of resources to keep X modern is besides the point. If you are going to switch your resources to make Gnome Linux only then Gnome should do more of Linux Only type of work, bypassing all the legacy the X11 has been carrying around. I also fail to see how the Apple GUY actually sucks especially when you compare it to Linux, on the Mac I never had problem with Copy and Past, and still Linux still struggles and it is a crapshoot if it work across applications or not. I don't know about you but over a Decade Linux you still cant duplicate a feature that has been working solidly in other systems for over a generation.
You are doing it wrong. 1. If you are an adminstrator of any worth you can do it without X via command line. 2. Almost all enterprise Applications that are fairly new are Web Based 3. There are other just as affordable or more affordable remote access "thin client" solutions available.
X11 is an aged and out of date protocol. It had its use, today it is a dinosaur. Just because you work on badly managed enterprise or aged model, it doesn't mean everyone else does.
I kinda see why they are doing this. They are trying to make web browsers more like using an application vs. browsing. And in Web Applications Coding it so it can handle Forward, Back and Refresh, and links to the location bar adds complexity of your code. However it seems they are doing this at the expense of non-Web Applications. Eg. I went to Slashdot I saw this article. I clicked on the link read the content and hit the back button then hit comments. I would prefer a way for HTML to tell the browser that I am an application where I forbid the back and forward buttons to work on my tab (or have it go back to the external site that found it) Then just removing the feature
The problem is that Gnome has always fit in an odd spot. Above X11 (which is OS/Hardware Dependent's) and below the Windows Manager (In which GNOME often lets you choose who you want, to an extent). I would think Gnome Development if becomeing a Linux-Only product should be used to help remove X11 from Linux. X11 has become Linux's problem.
The XWindows system was designed as a way to view a GUI over a network. For its time it was quite good at what it needed to do. Sending vector images, common commands to the X Server to display the images worked wonderfully in a world of simple graphics and low bandwith. Today it is becoming extra overhead. Performing rather slow over the network compared to newer tools even RDP is fast compared to X11. And more time is being spent to make it perform well. Problems with trying integrate Open And Closed source drivers and stability issues. Have made the need for X11 out of date. Gnome having a large applicationbase already using its API could create a situation where it can replace X11 and give Linux a Modern approach to the UI. Much like how Apple did it with OS X over a decade ago. Being able to Give Linux a GUI that is more advanced the Windows or OS X because its new core for UI is based on the 21st century technology vs. 20th century. Things like Resolution independent displays, better integrated 3d, and multi-touch. Many things we have now but are made as a hacked add on vs a core development of the UI.
Linux should no longer bother wining the desktop. Let Microsoft keep the desktop, Linux need to win Mobile, and Touch pads. Otherwise Linux will win the desktop space only after the desktop is irrelevant. Although much of us Old Fogies will fight against the idea of the Desktop demise, I doubt it will die but it will become like the mainframe a generation ago, moved from a needed device for computing to reserved for functions that it is really good at. We still have mainframes new ones running and selling but not for every company. Just as with desktops/laptops it will move to software development and CAD firms. Pushing other companies to go with more mobile devices, and perhaps like the iPad with an optional external keyboard just for writing letters.
I remember back in those old BBS days where they had DOS Based BBS Software where when somone logged into your BBS You had a near mirror image on what the user was doing. So while they typed their password you saw their password echoed to the Sysop screen at real time. For small BBS's a SysOp knew if the user was just by watching them login. You knew by they way they typed if it was them or not.
Which ever one that you are not part of. Those planets were either taxed out of orbit or Forced out of orbit by corporations with not government protection. Maybe the planets residents overused solar energy and sucked their sun dry? Or the enemy on the other side of the globe decided it was a good idea to bow up the sun when it was night for them, as to destroy their sun.
Students seem to pay about 10% extra more then their tuition on books, which are required for the classes. Colleges are actually one the key reason why the publishing companies stay alive. If you push them too hard they just might realize for most of the classes those required books are not required, and that 75% of their student who purchase these books actually crack them open 4 times a semester (unless there are problems to solve in them)
While most problems today are complex. We still try to cling to the groups ideology to try to solve the problem vs. realizing the ideology isn't the solution just a start of an approach which needs modifications. However political parties leader will not waver too far off their ideology core as the group in the hole still follows that ideology.
I think it is more to the point on the Self-Importants that city governments place on themselves. If this were a private company I could see a fine of $500,000 max. But because it was a government agency somehow it was that much more important.
Yes but there are groups who wants to remind us that the U.S.A. isn't the model good guy. For some reason it gives these groups a feeling of self importance that they point out these things, they may not be able to feed and cloth the poor, or help improve the environment, or make anyones lives better, but they can do their part by showing that the United States of America isn't the Good Guy but a country out for its own self interest.
This is Data that will surprise only the United State Citizens who are nationalist, and thus will not believe the data anyways. Or people who just Hate the U.S. and just add it to their list of problems. But for the normal person around the world it shouldn't be a surprise at all. Like Every Country in the world it is out for its own self interest, and doesn't want to be attacked and/or taken over by an other country, if there is a threat to that they will want any advantage necessary.
As a consumer you really shouldn't care, just as long as it does what you want at a performance that you are happy with. This has nothing about a programmer being too lazy. It is about having a unified code base for the application. The time saved having one code for multiple products means resources can be put into adding more features or improving the product, as well making more money per app so you can hire more resources. Vs. Getting an App made just for your phone and have it go into abandonware in a year because the company went out of business, besides there isn't anything saying the app made just for the device had a developer who wasn't lazy, they could be just as lazy and have an app with less features and performs much worse due to the lazy developer.
It is probably because Chrome Support was easy. As IE 9 supports HTML 5 and they are getting away from Active X and actually making their Web Apps Web Compatible. I think Microsoft realized they may have won the browser war but failed in their objectives (having a monopoly on setting the standards). I think IE 9 is an attempt to save face in the area where developers are no longer developing for IE First then trying to get it to work for other browsers if it is easy, They are actually going the other way around.
The part of the movies and Star Trek I hated when you had the laser/phaser type of gun which fires a beam for a few seconds. Is that they actually miss, Because they stand there fire in one direction opps they missed and re-aim and fire again. As anyone who used a laser pointer knows If you miss you can correct rather quickly and there the bad guy is fried. Perhaps with some collateral damage, but not much more then a bunch of random laster holes in you hull.
The problem today. Is because the Tax Code is so complex the wealthy have too many loop holes that they have the resources to exploit. While the poor who may be paying less in percentage do not have the resources to exploit those loop holes thus paying more. A simplified Tax system without the loop holes even if it means observable tax cuts for the wealthy can mean the Rich are paying their fair share and there is a net+ increase in tax revenue.
The real problem is how we determine wealth. A CEO may get paid $1.00 a year but uses the company jet and lives in his "Office" because he is working all the time thus everything is a business expense. Oh you say he should pay tax on all those perks as part of his real income. But let say an Engineer who brings home $50,000 a year and lives modestly but work has him travel across the globe, Should he have to pay taxes for the company flying him to places to do his job.
Farmers who have millions of dollars in assets but they are just making ends meat, should they be taxed more then a consultant living out of an apartment who total net value in assets may only be $90k but lives a very comfortable life.
The reason it is complicated is because wealth is complicated, any form of simplifying it will hurt some people proportionally more then others who may benefit where they shouldn't
Because it is pointing out the Original Argument about security that the OSS zealots feared. Linux isn't that much more secure the only reason it gets attacked less is because it is less popular. As distributions of Linux get popular they become targets and get hacked.
As much as we hate the Apple Store block of apps, it does help protect us in terms of security.
I would love it if.NET worked on Android and iOS, and Java Worked on iOS and Windows Mobile. Why should developer have to recode their application for every Mobile OS? They are already on tight controlled budget (Normally can't sell an app more then $10.00, and they will get $7.00 from that sales).
This stuff about Open Source Purity really gets in the way of getting the job done,.NET will not go away any time soon. There are a lot of Apps and Business Logic out there in.NET that can probably be moved to mobile devices. Having to recode every time is harking back to the 1970's again. Developers and Customers should be Free of these hardware wars if they choose. You have closed platforms of iOS and Windows Mobile and a partially closed platform of Android. What ever you are doing isn't Pure anyways, so might as well get the job done if you can't follow your ideals.
Having them break up into smaller pieces is a good thing. Because you now have a bunch of small groups with limited resources, and more diverse motive. So there will be more smaller attacks which may more easily be thwarted. Vs. a large organization who can do more tactile large scale attacks. These people are criminals. The fact that they are using computers to do their crimes doesn't excuse them. It is the same as breaking into a building. They are using "Oh we are protesting" nonsense to try to justify them acting as a criminal, the same way a bank robber justifies robbing the bank stating that the bank is just an evil organization and the money they steal will be covered by FDIC.
OMG a Video Game System (not even the most popular one) has dropped OS Support, This is worth an attack on a company? Seriously? Out of all the unjust things in the world to fight about this is the best you can do and put your resources on? Whats next Hack Wendy's because you don't like the taste of their new fries?
This is a different situation. Unplanned downtime which is due to stability of the OS. and Planned Downtime. I have had windows servers running fine over a year. They were often doing a particular task in a protected network.
"The Edu Revolution is coming, and it's going to scare the Old Boys network."
The "Old Boys" network has a key advantage. Their parents actually care and can fully provide for the welfare of their children. The problem with Public Education is the fact that there is this crazy idea that "All kids should be saved and are worthy to go to college" The problem is School isn't always fun and most children do not have the ability to self motivate themselves to do well in school. There are a lot of parents who think education is a wast and use the schools as a baby sitting service. Other parents do not have the resources to help their children. Private school aren't any better then public schools however the parents tend to pressure the children to perform better. If you take all the kids out of a snotty upper crust public school and put them in the poorest inner city school, and all the kids of the inner city school into the upper crust public school I doubt you will see any meaningful change in the child's education.
I would argue the schools will need to be more selective. If by high school they should be strongly pressured (not forced) to go to vocational training if they don't have what it takes, so they are trained for the workforce in 4 years. The A and B students will then continue onto High school, where the distractive elements of kids who really don't want to be there, is reduced thus can focus more on education and college.
