  1. It's all about marketing... on Valve Says Choice to Make DX10 Vista-Only Hurt PC Gaming · · Score: 1

Most folks here don't understand why DirectX dominates over OpenGL. I enjoy both APIs, who doesn't that's a professional? It's the kids at home who take religious sides, aka going to OpenGL Church.

    1. Microsoft has a much better marketing strategy than Khronos ever will. Needless to say, they have the market base.
    2. Microsoft's tools are much better than OpenGL's - XBox 360 and the PC. XAudio, D3DX, dxdiag, and much more.

I want to see Khronos succeed too, but it all comes down to money and how they market their product. Microsoft has more money to spend on their operating system. Developers use DirectX on the PC because they were recommended to, and developers need support on that system. Khronos fucking sucks at support. If you use OpenGL, you are on your own pretty much. If you can't accept that, you haven't experienced releasing a product.

  2. DirectX is already a pain to work with on Companies 'Blah' About Vista · · Score: 1

I develop and DirectX and all I get for support is "we don't support that anymore," or they're completely redoing an API while giving some Sony-like ignorance saying "companies don't use it that much." I do. What I'm saying is DirectDraw was replaced with Direct3D which is kinda minor, but support for DirectDraw to run in the future for backward compatability is quite void or being built over software emulation. DirectSound is getting replaced with XACT while 3d hardware acceleration for DirectSound is completely gone from Vista! What happened to the #1 gaming OS? DirectMusic is on the state of change but still there. DirectShow was moved to the Windows platform SDK. DirectInput was dropped from XNA for PC gaming expecting the gamer to have a 360 controller. DirectPlay was dropped earlier but has no equivelant to take over. What I am learning is what I am unlearning. The same thing goes on with Windows Vista now too. I am just really considering OpenGL for now on because I learned to respect consistancy.

  3. Is Microsoft An Innovator? on Is Microsoft An Innovator? - The Winer-Scoble Debate · · Score: 1

Of course they're not. Direct3D is playing catch-up with OpenGL's ease of use, and they try eliminating OpenGL anyway for their platform, although they took a ton from it. Internet Explorer is playing catch-up with FireFox. Windows Vista's user interface is playing catch-up with the Mac. C# played catch-up with Java and to a good degree they passed Java. My point is even though they may be playing catch-up, they still make things standard but in their own ways. But they are clearly not innovators.
