  1. threat, advantage or ... on Windows Marketing Executive Doug Miller · · Score: 1

Is it seen as a threat, an advantage or as no competition for Windows at all? After all one could still say: "Wine is hard to install, many programs do not run properly, you mostly can't use the latest and greatest programs on it..." (And, yes friends, I do know about Codeweavers and Transgaming...)

  2. ...or h2g2 on GNUPedia Project Starting · · Score: 2

There is of course h2g2 -- Douglas Adams' famous guide. But it's more a practical encyclopedia. So maybe we really need something like a "free as in free speach" clone of Britannica.

who would have thought of that 5 years ago when that funny NV-1 chip arrived...

...have you ever tried to buy Q3A in germany? it's nearly impossible. the only european distributor (suse) wants you to show up and show them your ID-card, because Q3A is on the index of violent games in germany. that would be ok, but the problem is that you can't get the retail version in any regular gamestore either!

SuSE usually has boot floppy images on the installation CDs. So maybe you first have to download the CD images to get the boot floppys :-)

I can just say: Yeah, blender's really cool, but I recommend buying the 1.80 manual now, because it's REALLY worth the money. And further on 2.0 won't be out until very late of this year and maybe the 2.x series will be a lot different...
And last but not least: The manual really LOOKS cool! :-)

  9. Licensing and XAnim on Why Hasn't Apple Released Quicktime For UNIX? · · Score: 2
Well, last year I wrote to Sorenson asking for supporting additional platforms like Linux. This is what I got as the answer:
Thank you for your question about Sorenson Video on unsupported OS platforms. Sorenson Vision has chosen to team up with Apple and their QuickTime product. Because of this, Sorenson Video is only available on supported QuickTime OS platforms. QuickTime is available for Mac OS , Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4. According to Apple, the next platform to be supported will be Mac OS X (including Mac OS X Server), which is Mach/BSD-based. If you're interested in QuickTime for platforms other than Mac or Windows, please contact your platform vendor and let them know that you would like them to license QuickTime from Apple. Once QuickTime is available on a platform, Sorenson Video will be there as well.
So what do we learn from this? I don't want or need a GPL'ed QuickTime (though it would be neat!) but it seems we are not going to see a QuickTime for Linux in the near future because who is going to license it? And licensing seems to be the only possibility at the moment! So what are the options? Maybe Mark Podlipec - the XAnim maintainer - could license QuickTime (lol!), but who would fund him? Anyway, AFAIK he's currently working on a new XAnim release. In last december I asked him about a new release and he wrote:
I've been working on a complete rewrite of xanim. Slow going but it's getting there. I can stream WAV, FLI, AVI, MPEG(audio and some video) across ftp, http, stdin and from a file. I can also play audio via RTP(real time protocol). GUI is there(file requester, play bar for seeking) and special f/x modules like echo(for sound) and blur(for video). Everything is modular. Still a lot of work to do on it.
So let's just see (and support) Mark on his new release and let's hope, that we'll some day get a good and free streaming media codec!
  10. MIDI Devices on What Is The State Of MIDI Support Under Linux? · · Score: 1

Another problem is a lack of support for MIDI-Devices. Ok, MPU-401 is no problem, so are EMU10k synths like the SB-Live & co (of course I'm speaking of ALSA, but also OSS has problems with wavetable devices). I've got a SB PCI128 with an Ensoniq chip, it works find, apart from the wavetable. Ok, musicians will have their own MIDI-sound module or keyboard attached to their computer, but I just want to use MIDI now and then - timidity is nice, yes, but why do I have a wavetable on my board in the first place?

It seems already slashdotted... it's 1515h local time - the inprise-web-serber replies with tons of "access denied", the linux download-page is half empty, after I have fiddled out the three ftp/http servers not even one is either responding or letting me in! I tried it with good old "ftp" and also with "Webdownloader for X" - http/ftp. It's dead! Dead dead dead! Why do I have this dumb 2 MBit connection anyway?
