  1. Science fact on Ask Chris McKinstry About Giant Telescopes, Etc. · · Score: 1

I read the same article in S&T magazine a few months back. Yes, it is real, but it has serious limitations. For example, due to gravity, you cannot tilt the spinning mirror because the mercury would fly right off of one side. Also, the equipment needed to spin up the heavy pan the mercury rests in is quite delicate and expensive. This is all talked about in the S&T article.

  2. Telescopes in space on Ask Chris McKinstry About Giant Telescopes, Etc. · · Score: 1
There've been a lot of questions and comments concerning the merit of ground-based scopes considering the fact that we are now capable of putting them into space, however unstable a platform it may be (remember all the Hubble woes).

Nevertheless, I think we should push ahead in this direction, maybe even culminating in an observatory on the dark side of the Moon. My question is do you think this is a reasonable of estimate of the future, and how long do you think it will take us to put an observing station (manned or not) on the lunar surface?

I though he was the only actor to play the role of Q in all the bond movies. I remember watching OHMSS (the first Bond movie, and based on the book of same name), and Q was there, and it was Llewelyn, and I remember thinking, "Whoa this guy has been there since Bond Movie 1!"

Anyway you cut it he's a cool dude. Thank you Mr. Llewelyn for such great entertainment!

Amazon.com sells books. So as long as they keep doing a good job, carrying a wide selection, and offering me arms and legs of retail price, I will continue to be a customer. To not support them because of a petty patent squabble is the real disgrace, in my eyes.

I have no trouble downloading the.mov files because they are just binaries, but is there a program for linux that can play .mov files?

  6. MS and their "Principles of Warfare" on How The Web Was Almost Won · · Score: 1
I'm a computer science student, and I'll be entering the field of battle in a few years. Having said that, I'd like to pose my stance:

    1. The Web and the tech industry in general runs on the backs of smart folks. Microsoft's current position is due to Bill's cleverness.
    2. I may be alone, but I don't think so, in thinking that I'm working to better society, and not just make money. "Yeah right" some readers are saying, but I wouldn't go to work on "The Campus" (microsoft) if they paid me a 2 million dollar salary.

So, back to what I was saying, if people in the tech industry are principled, ethical, clear-headed folks, item #4 (price out the talent) falls. The monster strangle-hold companies (like microsoft) have their knees cut out without the gray matter.

So why will OpenSource win? Because it makes sense. Because it's easy. Because it's free. I'm kinda interested to see what others think about this...

  7. As if windows or msie were stable... on How The Web Was Almost Won · · Score: 1
"Microsoft's web browser dominates the market. Linux does not have a very modern or stable web browser at the moment." You contradict yourself here. Windows isn't stable.

"Pages are written to work better with MSIE and have MSIE specific tags." Here is where you are right, and this is one of the bases for my dislike of Microsoft. The Web has the potential of being something great--a place where people using different computers running different OS's have access to uniform data. Microsoft, in the span of maybe five years, has absolutely destroyed this philosophy. Does MS own the Web? Not all of it, but enough to count.

Science IS dull, or else everyone would be scientists. The marvelous results of science are what entertains us. The process of inventing the computer or mapping the many particles flying away from collisions is tedious, but using a computer or thinking about time travel is very stimulating.

It is a rare individual, and a special gift to humanity, that endures the tedium knowing that their suffering and brutal scientific scrutiny will pay off.

  9. Linux is a tool of politcal change on Linux Use in China - a View From Beijing · · Score: 1
Linux is a tool of political change because freedom of information leads to freedom of thought leads to political freedom.

If you read Mr. Jiang's article closely, you can feel his excitement over the fact that all the information in order to run Linux was right at his fingertips. Imagine his frustration at the fact that this freedom may not be mirrored in the real world, either caused by his government (which I see has already been argued to death here) or some other entity. Whenever there is enough discontent, there will be a breaking point. Keep in mind that the Berlin Wall came down because a phone call was made by mistake. A seemingly insignificant event triggered something much larger with global ramifications.

These are just my opinions, and whatever impact Linux REALLY has, I'm interested to see how it will all play out.

No plot? Really, I thought that in the begginning of the movie Neo was a cubicle creature, and at the end he was somewhat of an immortal. Such great development requires a little bit of plot, no?
