Uh...I think you might be wrong. What about your printer or modem? Or Palm? It could be used without another machine, but it loses a lot on its own. I think your logic is really quite flawed.

Who's responsible for these things? And how much of the taxpayers' money did they cost? I hope the voters pay attention in November.

I'd really like to know why private business has so much sway over government in these sorts of things. I'm quite certain that this county's contract is one of the largest orders that the company has ever gotten. How come the county, as the consumer, doesn't realize that it has the power in the situation, and instead of acting out of fear of the company, should act to protect the interests of its residents.

I'm sure I'll buy it -- don't get me wrong. I'm just a little disappointed. One of my favorite things about the Mac was all of the stuff we got for "free" -- kickass OS, free developer tools, Mac.com. Now the cool integrated experience of e-mail and webpages isn't free. As I recall, too, it was a big plugging-point for iPhoto -- free integrated homepage pictures. Apple isn't out of line, just a bit disappointing.

I'm not sure what to think. I'm a huge Apple fan, and I love my Mac.com account. I've standardized my e-mail around it, really. This is a really dumb move. Just dumb. I really hope Apple comes to their senses soon -- .Mac is a neat idea, but charging money for it? Come on!

Or is that just when the operating system that you can't have does it that's a waste and stupid?

First point: Microsoft wrote a crap-ass OS. UNIX is a fantastic foundation for an OS. It works, and it works well. It hardly sucks.

Second point: What? Do you realize that what you said doesn't mean anything? Apple never supported BeOS. They made their hardware information available to anyone who wanted it. Later on, they stopped. Apple never supported anything. And what the hell do you mean about running a Mac OS on IBM hardware? Wouldn't that lead to them keeping the Apple hardware available for the Be folk? You need to think about what you're saying before you say it. Otherwise, you just sound silly.

I don't want to be a jerk unnecessarily (too late, I guess), but to me, mis-capitalizing a specifically-capitalized word is the same thing as misspelling it. The name of the company was Be. The Operating system was BeOS. Another model of computer is the Mac (not the MAC, it's short for Macintosh, not media access control), which is made by Apple. Just like it's Linux and not LINUX, or Linus's name isn't LinUs, other proper nouns do not include InterNet, PhotoShop, or MicroSoft. Enough of being a jerk, back to being a lazy ass.
