It's not a matter of jealousy. I do speak the truth. Microsoft may try to rewrite history after the fact, but what I said is true nonetheless. Yes, I know Microsoft's sole motivation is money. Not just money, mind you. Piles. Stacks. TONS of money. But it is my opinion that once a company's only motivation is money, it's outlived its usefulness. I'm not saying that companies shouldn't attempt to make money - that's a major reason such commercial entities exist. I'm just saying if they've lost all other motivation, they're not doing anyone (besids themselves) much good.

Yes, for the general public, who are willing to put up with crashes and inconsistencies and feeling generally straitjacketed, Windows and Windows NT do okay. And getting Linux to work correctly isn't a problem. If you've done it once, it can easily be scripted so you never have to do it again. Unlike with Windows, where you've got a black box, where you can only guess at what you're doing, and if something doesn't work right, you can only dick with it till it magically starts doing what it should, or breaks in an ugly fashion.

And no, Bill Gates isn't a genius. He's a Harvard dropout who was in the right place at the right time - mommy set him up with some friends who happened to be in the right places in IBM, he happened to run across QDOS and pick it up for a pittance. Simply timing. Since then, he's again and again proven he could market sandbags to people in the Mojave and probably sell a lot of 'em. And no, I don't think he's richer than the sultan of Brunei. (who afaik is STILL the world's richest man)

Mind you, I don't advocate violence like that - it was wrong, and it was NOT their only option. But at the time, it probably seemed like the only option.

Were you ever in a situation like that when YOU were in school? If you weren't, then you have no clue what it can be like. I myself did go through such things, so I can understand how they could get to that point (mind you, I never went on a murderous rampage). As many have said, the school should be held partly to blame for this. Often times, the teachers and other staff either can't or won't do anything about students harassing others. They really need to deal better with students who harass other students, otherwise things like this will continue to happen.

Why can't people take a second and realize that guns are NOT the problem (the kids made somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 pipe bombs, plus timed incendiary devices of other sorts)? Making guns illegal won't stop people from obtaining them (and I'd LOVE to see you try to get a bill started to repeal the 2nd Amendment - they'd laugh your ass clear out of DC.)

I repeat, DON'T be blinded by emotional vitriol because those kids used guns. The fault lies squarely at the feet of the kids, and their parents (who apparently weren't paying attention while their kids were stockpiling weapons and ammunition, and making pipe bombs), as well as the seemingly blind teachers and school administrators (they don't pay much attention either - they often didn't when I was in high school and things don't sound like they've improved).

I play (and have played) a bevy of violent games - Doom, Doom II, Dark Forces, Quake, Quake II, and others which I can't think of off the top of my head. I watch movies that are violent. I listen to techno, and I actually enjoy a little Rammstein and KMFDM. I was teased and bullied in high school. None of these things made me snap - my parents paid attention to me.

It sounds like these kids were disaffected and disconnected, and had other problems which can't be easily dismissed as a result of them "having guns". Once I'm 21, I may seek a handgun and a concealed carry license. Does that make me some kind of freak? No.

As another person mentioned, and rightly so, "if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". I personally fear knowing that no one but a criminal would have a gun - that I or another would be in the wrong defending him/herself with a gun if that's what it takes. Taking away guns is just squashing a side-effect of the problem - people like the two shooters from Littleton, who have obvious problems, and parents who don't bother to pay attention to their children. It's that simple.

On the other hand, a computer isn't a single purpose machine. You have to have some idea what you're doing. There are countless things you can do with it. It's not like an N64/PlayStation (another machine with a singular purpose - game playing). With them, you plug in power, video, audio, controllers, drop in a game, and go. Not so easy with a full-fledged computer. And along with having a lot you can do, there are a lot of things that you should do (system upkeep, for one - I know, most Windows (l)users don't do much of that).

It's just not the same thing. That's a tired analogy. Let it rest in peace now, people.
