  1. Re:No Game Nights, but hacking was allowed.. on Games in High School? · · Score: 2, Interesting

My high school actually let the computer club take over the computer lab all night for a massive gaming session. This was back in the day when Marathon and Quake II were the games of choice. (We played on Macs, by the way.) They also let us hook up the digital projector to the screen in the theater. That was awesome.

This was in exchange, in some respect, for all of the work that we put in creating and maintaining the web site.

I think the new system administrators don't give the computer club much access to the web site anymore, and the all-night gaming sessions have gone the way of the dot-com.

    Ah, well.

This seems to be about politics as much as it is about engineering and science. It is certainly not surprising that they are willing to use Tibet as a place to test these potentially dangerous civil engineering techniques. This may be yet another way for them to show the international community that they feel they own Tibet, and will do as they please with it, regardless of international approval.

I am not mistaken (please correct me if I am), the dam will be built in an area near Tibet or in Tibet where the Chinese are planning to relocate a significant number of farmers. They wanted to use World Bank or IMF money to move in Chinese farmers and drive out Tibetans from more desirable regions. This was the source of much international disproval. The more people the Chinese government moves into or near Tibet, the harder it will be for Tibet to ever become autonomous again. "Look!" they will say, "There are thousands of Chinese people here! This is part of our country!"

The article also discusses the effects the dam and diverting the water from the river will have on the people who live in the area. There are small farmers (in Tibet, India, and Bangladesh) who need this water, and this may well jeopardize their survival in this already hunger-stricken region.

Obviously, the Chinese government needs to do something to provide water and electricity to its population, but this seems have dangerous political consequences.

  3. Join the Black Ribbon Campaign on The Price of Being Different · · Score: 1

At my high school, people passed out blue and white ribbons to remember the people who were killed at Columbine High School and show sympathy for their families.

In response to the national backlash against nonconformists, the web/computer club (a haven for geeks, nerds, and other non-mainstream people) at my school decided to raise awareness about the plight of nerds, geeks, goths, gamers, and others at schools around the country. We distributed copies of "Why Kids Kill," and told our more mainstream schoolmates about this other facet of the Columbine High School tragedy.

We have also started to pass out black ribbons to be warn in addition to the blue and white ones. This has helped spread awareness about the issue in a very non-threatening way, and literally dozens of people have asked, "What's the black ribbon for?" Then we explain about the witch hunt and hand them a copy of the article. Nearly all have reacted with surprise and sympathy. Quite a number of them -- students and teachers -- have asked for black ribbons.

Perhaps the black ribbon could be a good way of spreading awareness in other places, especially high schools in other parts of the country.

If anyone else tries this, I'd love to hear how it goes.
