    Zero, for example.

    Absence of benefit != loss and unless they used the RIAA's bandwidth, I'm not seeing any other source of loss.

    No damage was done by her downloading/uploading. Damage has been done by the manipulation of the legal system in an attempt to stifle innovation and healthy human emotions such as sharing. Every time they get away with this kind of blatant abuse, it's one more nail in their coffin. Keep it up, fuckers.

    When the tide has turned, hopefully someone will go after the evil fucks and reclaim all the money extorted from ordinary people.

    Yah but that's a time-local issue; i.e. you'll be in trouble in the immediate future.

    I'm saying that unless everyone starts doing their part and providing 'authority' figures with meaningful feedback (in the sense of a counterbalance) *everyone* is going to be screwed, long-term.

    Some people with authority(especially those in certain government agencies, but I digress) seem to make up the rules as they go along. That's what makes them dangerous.

    I'd argue that it's the fact that people give too much attention to authority and blindly do whatever they're told to do. How difficult is it to scream 'get out of my pants you paedophile!' ?

    It's everyone's duty to ensure that a correct balance of power is maintained. Those in 'authority' need to be challenged whenever they overstep the bounds of that authority.

    This applies to you too Mr 65lb weakling with a 350lb wife. The phrase "I need to eat too!" can be useful on occasion. (I'm prolly gonna get modded into oblivion for this but what the heck? - excellent karma is getting old :)

    Just wondering. Will the populous at large continue to allow these small steps in the erosion of personal liberties and privacy, or when too many people have become uncomfortable, will they finally stand up and revolt.

    Bah. The moment law stopped being a codification of what the majority consider to be right and proper, it lost value.

    These days it's a codification of who's paid who and as such I choose to ignore it as much as I able; choosing instead to refer to my internal moral compass.

    I don't subscribe to the idea that every action or discussion must be arbitrated by a lawyer.

    I have a degree in computer science; am *I* to be consulted every time someone wants to email a friend or download some hedgehog pron* ? hopefully not

    When you buy the CD, you haven't bought any rights to anything. You've just bought the CD. According to copyright, you have no right to copy that CD.

    Really though; who cares? If the law is out-of-synch with reality, should I play along? I think not... Do what's *right* not what's legal. You'll cause less damage / hurt less people and be much happier.
