I seem to remeber an Author C Clarke Article with his predictions posted on slashdot which made predictions for the coming 1000 years, on the list was Pons-Flieshman prefect cold fusion and recieve nobel prize. Many think this field of study is not dead.
Think of everything the space race gave us: new polymers and alloys, discovery of the ozone layer (as a result of a probe to mars, GPS systems for civilian use, Comsats, a new emphasis on math and science in school, and perhaps most importantly the bonding of a culture into a unified force bent on a common goal. There is no branch of science which isnt accelerated by ventures into space. Humans are naturally explorers and there is really only one frontier left, to leave it unexplored is to deprive humans of thier very nature. True there are problems here on earth which could use money to be solved but that money shouldnt come at the cost of man's will to 'drink life to the lees' and follow the star of knowlage over the horizon and into space. I would much rather see things like our war machine stunted by lack of funding then our ability to explore. Who knows what science will be aided by space exporation? Who knows how many people will find purpose by pursuing it? To leave these questions unanswered because of problems here on earth would be a travesty. I wonder if people thought similarly about the exploration of the new continent which was North America. I am sure to many it seemed a worthless pursuit but in the end it provided many advancements, raw materials, and social progress by merely existing and needing to be tamed.
all the digits are prefect squares too.

Just an obeservation. 1, and 9 both perfect squares. WOW odd and all perfect squares, too bad there in no major event to coincide with today to make it easy on future high school history students.
I mean for years, these animals have been producing and improving the atmostphere out of the goodness of thier hearts and now someone is profiting off all of it. Even if they open the IPO to people who helped them produce oxygen, several will be rejected and even then its not fully paying back the Open Oxygen Community. also this article reminds me of the one on linuxworld today about the linux powerhouse LinuxOne which recently announced IPO. -grant
Tough questions that innovators of the web will have to answer and quickly. It seems ironically enough the thing which makes the web what it is, and that is no goverment restrictions, is also the thing which threatens to destroy it(with warez manufactures, spammers, virus writers hiding behind polictical boundries ie. china and russia) What is to be done?
Instead of providing a constant stream of 'how to pimp out your linux box' articles slashdot has a broader base. Thats why i visit. I enjoy articles with 'loose tie-ins' because they are intressting. Everything geek.
and busted June 11 of this year. Info care of google search engine. seems to make you think perhaps flipz is female, still not postive though. ps i want to marry the linux girl
Do you think that if technology were devolped which would (seem) to secure communications once and for all such as quantum encryption, that the Fed's would attempt to block it as they did satalite phones? Not to sound paranoid but is it possible the private sector would never benifit from its' creation?
there was that mst3k episode about radar...

Rise of the Nanobots

It featured a movie which predicted radar would be used to solve crimes, find lost objects, and generally accelerate man into the age of aquarious. Television failed to live up to its promise, i think in 50 years we will file this article next to the articles about personal flying machines and table top fusion generators (both of which are still possible, but they didnt spring into existance as was promised)
Sure nintendo and bug collections arent the coolest. I think tho, that geeks and generally guys who havent made womanizing a hobby should be wanted by girls, they are far more likely to be honest, and respectfull. do you think those rules work in reverse?
How long until human spirit is duplicated or perhaps even enhanced by computers. What kind of society are we building? One where we are completly outmoded? Comfort and ease at the cost of our importance? "every good machine dreams of the day it will be replaced by a better machine"
