  3. Re:What a bunch of crap on Is the Net The Cause of California's Power Problems? · · Score: 1

There isn't a shortage of electricity. The problems stems from the electricity resellers selling the electricity at a fraction of what they pay for it from the producers. Sometimes they buy it for 10 to even 100 times what they sell it for. And the way de-regulation in California works is that it has a fixed price that the resellers may sell the power for. Making an extremely unbalanced exchange between consumer, producer, and reseller. The reason for all of this is a financial shortage by the creditors putting the squeeze on the electric resellers.

  4. Re:Why not? on How Should You Interview Your Replacement? · · Score: 1

Aren't these little tests demeaning? Or a cop-out on the interviewers part? Far be if for the interviewer to actually know what questions to ask.

Wouldn't it be preferable to have more interaction with the potential employee? Certainly we can find a more professional way to interview potential employees.

"What kind of problems have you had in the past that have really stumped you?" and "What was your approach to solving it?"

"If you had a choice, which would it be?"
"Windows 98 ME or Windows 2000?"

    "Windows 2000 or MacOS 9?"

    "MacOS or BeOS?"

    "anal or vaginal?"

I am sure these questions would help you get a feel for your applicant.

  5. Let's go headhunting, who will be left standing? on Universities Refuse To Ban Napster · · Score: 1

This seems to be a re-occuring theme in the legal system. People don't care who they sue and don't really know who is responsible but they just point the finger at everyone. Hoping that they will hit the bulls eye at least once or twice. We just watch to see who is left standing to find out who wins in the end.

"Howard E. King, the attorney representing Dr. Dre and Metallica", states, "We're going to try to keep a dialogue with these universities, maybe point them to some authority that they've ignored or are not aware of,"

You mean make up something that some judge might believe? Or lets try to show the Universities that they are responsible for their facutly, staff, and students actions. Are we really searching for who is liable? Or just blindly shooting in the dark at anything we can hit?

"that tells them they have a higher responsibility than just putting their head in their sand,"

they aren't putting their head in the sand. They are refusing to submit to your demands. Blindly shooting in the dark?

Who do you think will be left standing?

  6. College is an investment on Techies Saying No To College · · Score: 1

Think of college as a monetary investment. One should expect some sort of return on the investment. Just as I would chose stocks based on what profit/growth/dividends I will get out of it an individual may do the same with their career.

So, go to college or not?

If it doesn't yield the financial returns college will then it just doesn't make sense. It would seem more resonable to take the job out of high school that pays a heck of a lot more. While you would get a chance to apply your skills you already have while gaining new ones. If the long term will yield more money by jumping into the workforce that must be the sensible decision.

I have struggled for years with the absence of practical knowledge my university education has supplied me with. I have finally resolved to the university being a tool to expand my mind and its tangible donation to my life a mere degree. The degree is only a ticket to somewhere else. And hopefully it will matter to someone but I am more certain my skills will always be more valuable than my degree.

I know there is difficulty in letting DOS go. There has to be. We've spend so many years as using it as our last resort and have invested so much in mastering its usage. There is a significant possibility this is a positive step in OS development. Just as we had to learn DOS and have become so dependent on it we will have to re-learn Win2k's basics. Of course, at the expense of many painstaking hours or reading and fussing and training.
