Holy crap. My automatic, summary-summarizing brain routines skipped the title and the clause containing a date (which I guess I unconsciously find unimportant) and read the first sentence as, "Space Shuttle burned up on reentry, killing all seven astronauts on board."
Turns out the story was about worms. Phew.
You are missing something: The suicide rates for the US which you're quoting are for entire lifetimes (the Americans had up to 70 years or so to decide to commit suicide); the suicide rates that you extrapolated for Foxconn are for one year only. If you wanted to compare the two numbers, you would need to compare a group of people who have worked at Foxconn for their entire lives (no such people exist) to Americans. I'm being a little more loose here with terminology than I should be, but I think you can see the obvious difference.
Even if you host your own email server or use a server in a country with great privacy laws, every email you send or receive is stored on two servers, each with your name (email address) attached to it. Unless everyone you email has the same security policy as you, your messages are little more secure than they would be if you used any other email server.
Not only that, but when the popups and adware and unnecessary background programs become too much for the users you speak of, they simply say "oh, my computer must be getting old, and I must need a new one!"
Perhaps it's best for Microsoft and PC manufacturers to allow adware and annoying software to run rampant, but then again, perhaps that's why so many amateur users are now switching to Macintosh.

Yet he never discovered that flash drives are rewritable...

I think "nomnomnom" is my favorite tag on /. so far.
