Were various councils such as the council of Chalcedon and the Council of Nicea not responsible for the fact that we do not have the gospel according to Thomas and the other gnostic and apocryphal documents in the bible? These councils chose from the selection the gospels that make up the new testament based on their knowledge of what Jesus was like, how accurate or subjective that was, I do not know.
Sure we still have these gospels to refer to, but the councils rejecting them was as good as burning them for the majority of the followers to come.
Unfortunately I'm no expert, just trying to piece together the information to understand the world around me.
Not entirely a false analogy. DNA does not have to be sourced from the same ecosystem that you have your DIY lab set up in.
It wouldn't take much to get resistance genes to take hold in new areas, so long as the selection pressure was there.
It probably won't be long before humans are forcing evolutionary leaps that nature can't do easily, for example: introduce genes for both virulence and resistance to that virulence... and then you will have a strain of rabbit that kills all wild-type rabbits. Not easy to do, but then neither were lots of things.
