    Indeed the optimizers in the RDBMS's can only go so far before they start being stupid. Pity that. It drives firms to adopt denormalized (or worse yet, never normalized in the first place) schemas for data mining and reporting purposes when simply breaking down the query into separate components would suffice.

    Always use the letters i,j,k, and l as loop counters! These were always automatically typed as ints by the Fortran compiler back in 1965. It's a tradition worth keeping.

    Anyone who relies on the absolute accuracy of obsolete diagrams for system maintenance is an idiot. Early on in my career I decided not to work on maintenance projects. I either talked management into total re-writes or just worked on brand new apps. I got rich doing it. Sweating/complaining about co-workers skills is a waste of time and can be detrimental to your career.

    If you aren't good enough politically or technically to always work on new stuff maybe you should think about changing careers.
