  1. Nachos at Kent State University on Custom Kernels Used In Comp. Sci Programs? · · Score: 1

The CS program at Kent State University uses Nachos in all of its Operating Systems courses. This semester, the instructor focused more on operating systems in general (particularly how *nix OSes function). Nachos was used for two relatively simple programming assignments involving using threads.

My only beef with the class was that the instructor was harsh on grading. The undergrads in the class are averaging C's while the grad students are averaging B's.

  7. My $0.02 on EULA In Games · · Score: 1

I feel that for an EULA to be enforceable, it needs to require that the consumer purchasing the software be presented a form which he/she must sign at the point of sale. This way, the EULA will have the same legal status as a contract between two people. Only drawback to this solution is that it will be too costly to implement, therefore the best way to go is free software and open source.

We all know that advertising is one big expense for many corporations (particularly dot-coms). Smart business people would want to find every way to reduce this as much as possible, yet still maximize exposure of the company to the public. Perhaps the best way to do it is to have companies compensate for referrals. In this case here, a user can download Opera 5, pay for the software, and as an option, choose to refer X users for a full refund of the purchase price. I'm sure somewhere, your personal information is collected, but smart people would only trust their personal info to corporations who do not misuse it.

Granted that we are moving towards a "virtual society," but the fact remains that physical interaction with other humans is still very important. For example, a person can be a social butterfly on the Internet, but in real life, couldn't say "hi" to a person that walked by. Some people are happy with this lifestyle, and that's fine with me. In fact, I wouldn't mind that lifestyle (but only if I don't have to work to pay the bill for a T1 and a computer network dedicated to online gaming). That's why I decided to abandon my shell, and go out and interact with others (particularly those who are not as smart as me), and show them a way to add value to their lives.

.ent -- entertainment sites (for movies and games)

I know there are others that can be added to this list, so feel free to suggest more.

In addition, the registrars would be required by ICANN to have registrants submit a link to the proposed site (or submit a copy of the entire site on a CD, DVD, or other storage media). The registrar would then review the site content, and judge whether or not the requested TLD would be appropriate for the site. If the registrant's application is rejected, the registrar would then suggest a more appropriate TLD for the site to use, and ask the registrant if he/she would like that TLD instead. For example, Amazon.com would be allowed to keep .com, but would be allowed to take .biz, but not .person. On the other hand, Jeff Bezos can take .person, put his page up, and link to Amazon from there.

  21. Promoting KDE and Open Source on Reasoning Behind The KDE League · · Score: 1

So promoting KDE is almost as important as working on KDE. Recent studies show that KDE is used on more the 70% of all Linux desktops. We could fight for those remaining 30% but given that Linux has less than 5% of the overall desktop market we should rather target the 95% of desktop users than compete with our friends from the GNOME project. Just converting 5% of Windows users will get us more KDE users than converting all GNOME users. But those users know little about Open Source, Linux or KDE and posting to some mailing lists won't change this. To address those users we have to communicate through other channels that we have little experience with.

What I would do is focus more on promoting Open Source, using KDE as an example to acquire new users. This way, the people can see the benefits of using Open Source software, and determine if their IT departments can benefit from switching to Open Source.

  22. Re:Doesn't anyone remember... on Top Ten Intel Slipups · · Score: 1

I remember a friend of mine saying that Intel once outsourced 386 processors to AMD. Because of this, AMD was able to get their hands on an early 486 chip. Technicians then took a laser and burned off layers of the chip, taking pictures of the circuit layout as each layer was removed. Once they were done, AMD had the blueprints to the 486 chip, and was able to compete with Intel.

Moral of the story: Never outsource a product you manufacture to a competitor, because you are revealing your trade secrets to your competitor.

  23. My $0.02 on Whistler vs. KDE/Gnome · · Score: 1

There is no clear winner or loser. Each interface has its advantages and disadvantages. Windows doesn't have a bad interface -- and it shouldn't, because Microsoft has put millions upon millions of dollars into making sure Whistler isn't the next "Bob." Gnome and KDE, on the other hand, have managed to put together very useable interfaces without millions of dollars behind them. All three interfaces need work to become as user friendly as possible, and all three can learn from each other.

I agree with this 100%. If software manufacturers wish to make money, then they must cater to the majority of users. This is where most of their profits come from (if the manufacturer is not distributing freely under the GPL, i.e. Micro$oft). I'm sure that most of the people who read and contribute to /. know most of the commands to every major OS that's in use, but keep in mind that a new user to Linux may not know how to mount a floppy disk drive, and may want some type of interface or program to guide him/her through the process.
