  1. How I feel about this on Internet Usage Records Accessible Under FOI Laws · · Score: 1

The logs are a public record, and anyone within the district should be allowed to access them without having to go through any red tape. This school did take a step in the right direction by having a teacher monitor the lab (although this could be a problem if the teacher on "lab duty" is heavily offended by stuff other than porn that a few students may find acceptable, such as role-playing games). I feel that this model will work in all public schools, as the students will be able to access whatever information they need to do their research projects, plus be able to have some fun just browsing.

  2. Note to the DOJ on MS To Virginia Beach: Prove You Own Your Software · · Score: 1

Make sure that Microsoft can not engage in this practice after the company is split. This may mean deciding if a shrink-wrap license has any legal value in society (IMHO, they don't because by right, consumers should OWN every piece of software that they pay money for).

  3. It's all about doing your due diligence on FTC Names Top-10 "Dot-Con" Types · · Score: 1

If you are looking for investment opportunities, do your due diligence first. Best way to do this is to acquire as much information as possible about something you are planning on investing into, and share this info with an unbiased third party. You can also search websites such as the FTC, BBB, and other consumer/government agencies to see what has been reported (either positive or negative). Once you have your facts straight, make your decision.

Would you renew funding of programs to research and develop global defense systems against asteroids or other such threats from space?

Bush: It won't be the first time that a big rock fell from the sky. Besides, I've only allocated $0.25 of the federal budget to such a program. You are welcome to chip in $0.25 if you want, and then we can compete against each other for highest score.

  5. My $0.02 on Is the PS/2 A Disappointment? · · Score: 1

People aren't going to give a flippin' rip about the hardware, BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT IT! As stated in the article, the games is where it counts. If IGN is reporting that Sega is losing money on the Dreamcast, and is looking at a joint-venture with Nintendo, then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

  6. Hopefully NASA won't screw up this time on 6 New Mars Missions · · Score: 1

If NASA can't correctly calculate the position of Mars so that the lander can make it to the surface, then this whole project needs to be placed into the hands of corporations who will actually hire competent mathematicians and scientists to do the math.

  7. My $0.02 (or about .012 gallons of gas) on Microsoft Threatens Oracle Over Benchmarks · · Score: 1

It appears that Big Bad Bill does not want to leave the little guys alone. If Microsoft wants to remain dominant in the future, then the company should focus more on product quality, rather than squeeze every penny out of its competitors over lame copyright issues. The hack reported earlier today is a start, but what Microsoft should do is step back and reassess the situation the company is in.

  8. It's all supply and demand on Sony Playstation 2 for Over $1k [Updated -- $5K] · · Score: 3

What we see here at work is the basic economic law of supply and demand. When there's a limited number of PS2s on the market (I believe 500k units in the initial shipment), and demand for about ten times that amount, retailers and individuals looking for profit will cash in on that demand. If you want a PS2, my advice is to wait until around March or April of next year, and buy one then. The prices should have come down to more reasonable levels, there will be a larger selection of games available (plus the fact that a few of your favorite titles and series are likely to be in development for future release), and you won't have to fight any crowds at the store.

I've heard a person in my German class today say that she was very close to attacking another person with a PS2, and walking off with his PS2 and taking it to the checkout line. If we have this kind of behavior and attitude by consumers at this time of year, imagine how bad it will be when you have everyone and his/her mother doing the same thing, not only for the PS2, but for every other "hot item" on everyone's Christmas wishlist.

  9. who gives a rat's @$$ about the hyphen? on "e-mail" vs "email" · · Score: 1

IMHO, I could care less how email (or e-mail) is spelled. I tend to use the hyphen, but I would not raise an argument over ASCII character 45 being inserted in between characters 101 and 109. To me, the debate would be a waste of bandwith that could be better used for Quake.

  10. I remember the NES coming out in '85 on NESs 15th Anniversary · · Score: 1

I was in third grade when the NES came out, but did not actually get one until '87. Why the long wait? I was still getting my kicks out of an Atari system (I loved playing Asteroids on that thing). When I got my NES, I got 6 games with it, and could not drop the controller for a period longer than for me to eat my dinner or to take a potty break. Needless to say, my grades in school took a plummet, but my mother saw what was happening, and was forced to unplug the NES until my grades rebounded. 15 years later, I'm still a gamer, but not as much as I was for the previous 14. I learned that success in life is not based on your ability to play video games, but is based on what other things that you do to help improve your life.

  11. I can see the intentions of this on Federally Mandated Censorware Up For Vote · · Score: 1

What Congress has in mind is requiring censorware be in place to block the inappropriate content that's out there. I feel that only the porn sites be blocked, and if there's an offensive word, that the word be *'d out. Although there should be freedom to access whatever you want, do keep in mind that what is offensive is deemed offensive by the offended, unless a higher power overrules the offended. I'm for this so that all the garbage that's out there stays out of the schools, and so that kids today learn some responsibility when using the Internet.

  13. Re:Computer in schools-- NOPE! on Dark Hearts And The Net · · Score: 1

How about we get back to teaching what kids need to know to get through life. Reading is important for numerous reasons. Math lets them describe their world in measurable ways. Literature helps them understand their feelings, and express themselves to others. History tells them how we got here, and generally points to where we're going. Science teaches critical thinking. These are what schools need, not computers. Ignore these, and we'll get a society that won't even know how to build a computer!

I agree with this 100%. What's needed is a reform in the school system (particularly at the administration level). All of the skills mentioned above are important, but there needs to be some initiative on the part of the student to take action, find out what he/she wants out of life, then go after it.

You cannot look to see if the box violates your privacy or has a security vulnerability that puts you at risk.

This sums up the article. Fsck the MPAA. Fsck DC, and while I'm at it, fsck anyone who dares to take away our rights to reverse engineering.

  15. They're doing what any smart business would do. on Microsoft and Cisco Don't Pay Taxes? · · Score: 1

Any intelligent business owner would want to reduce his/her taxes in every possible way. In a way, corporations are "double-taxed" in the US. If a corporation shows a profit, it has to pay taxes on the profits. If the corporation pays out dividends to the shareholders, the shareholders have to pay taxes on their share of the dividends received.

If you want to know exactly how corporations can do this, go read the books Rich Dad, Poor Dad, CASHFLOW Quadrant, and Rich Dad's Guide to Investing . These books were authored by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon L. Lechter.

  16. Fair use on How Will The DMCA Be Implemented? · · Score: 1

Although fair use is a defense to copyright infringement, fair use is not a defense to the DMCA. Therefore, a person who circumvents an access control in a work he has already purchased has violated the DMCA, Cohen wrote.

So in other words, I can't import DVDs and play them here, unless I use a region-free player, or DeCSS. If I purchase a legit DVD through legitimate sources, then I have every right to play that DVD on my player. Region coding is nothing more than a restriction on your free speech. Write the MPAA, the hardware manufacturers, and let them know how you feel. Inform the public about these practices (as a whole, we do not have a voice unless we get the general populace involved). This is how we can get the DMCA repealed.

I think it's time we organize the Million Geek March in Washington, DC.

  17. What about the hardware? on Time Warner To Change DVD Region Coding System? · · Score: 1

If people can hack :Cue:Cats and figure out how to scan without sending out the serial #, it should be possible to hack a DVD player and trick the player into playing any DVD disc. There must be some program burned into a ROM chip that does the region checking. It's only a matter of figuring out how to do it.

There are two excellent books out there: Personality Plus and Personality Puzzle, both by Florence Littauer. Both of these books are on the topic of human personalities, and the second one deals more with personalities in the work place, so it would be an excellent choice for those in management positions, as you may have to deal with people in the other departments. As for being assimiliated, all I have to say is "Success has a price, pay up or lose it."
