  1. MMORPG may work on Online Gaming for Couples? · · Score: 1

I can see your girlfriend not being into the typical games such as Counterstrike or Quake3. Most women don't like the killing. However, why not try an MMORPG such as Everquest, Horizons or the like. They give women the social aspect that they're looking for and add some excitement into the mix. I know many couples that play Everquest as a couple and in fact am currently using it, combined with the phone, to chat with that lady who is on the other side of the country. It gives you something to talk about on the phone as well.

Just make sure that you're carefull with it. Give her the option of trying it and make it low key, or else she might feel put off by this new communication medium.

  2. Compaq 1700T on Which Laptop To Buy? · · Score: 1

I have a Compaq 1700T and have been extremely happy with it so far. The performace is excelent, it is just perfect between lugging the 10lb + books around and the non-performing 2lb stuff. And, it looks great. Linux is a pretty easy install, the win-modem is a bummer, but other than that it works great with linux. If anyone is looking for a new laptop, i would highly recomend this one.

  5. Re:Take a trip down memory lane ... on Maxtor's 80GB Drive · · Score: 2

What about Serial ATA? Serial ATA, which is on target to be out to the consumer by Christmas, which will have a max data transfer rate of 1.5-2 gigabits/sec, and there will be solutions out later than that that will have multiple channels, imagine a HD with 8 gbs of bandwith, it is happening....

Unless i am mistaken, ram does not even get 8 gbs of bandwith, last time i checked it was in the 5-6 gbs.

You are correct, there is a limit to how many bits can be contained on a 3.5" platter, and how many platter's can fit into a drive. I do not know the exacts, but if i remember correctly, IBM development was talking about just fitting maybe 10 gigabits on a square inch? I am not too sure about that, so, dont take my word for it.

You say that 3dfx still holds the raw fill rate / card tri rate, but this is untrue. Only the Voodoo 6 will be able to compete with the GeForce II, and it seems that by the time that it gets released, Nvidia's next gen part is going to be released, and it is going to woop the buts of every other gpu out there. Take my word for it, NDA's do not allow me to go any farther.....
The only thing that 3dfx has over the competition is their *special* features : t-buffer, fsaa....
Unfortunately, as said above, the fsaa is only ok, not on the killer ap level that would make people give up raw fill.

This sounds to me like a *very* good rendition of SecurID. Not only does it have a safety margin in the way of fingerprints, but it does not rely on time / random number generation and would not need to have a central server in theory...
You would think that needing a scaner for every user would be a detriment, but, i belive that it would actually be an asset. I mean think about it, you would be able to store the public and private keys on the card, which would pretty much make it something like a extremely secure credit card.

Oh well, i am goning to need to get me one of these soon :)

  18. Dreams of a REAL system on Alpha 21264 And Athlon 850 Review · · Score: 1

I would like to see a Alpha put up against intel processors, like the p3 1 ghz. It would be an interesting battle, especially because in my opinon, Alpha's are a whole ton better than p3's. As someone above commented, the Alpha is doing to be *direct* competition against the intel merced, especially seeing as how as far as i know, the merced is going to need completely new software/operating systems to run, because of its being native 64 bit. The alpha already has software, operating systems, and had already demoed at 1 ghz, which intel does nto believe to reach until 3rd or 4th quarter 2001. Could it be that intel will at last loose it's foothold in the processor market, with AMD taking away market share in the main consumer market, and compaq/dec working on the workstation market......

  19. The good turning bad on Gnutella's Wall Of Shame? · · Score: 1

One of the things that i value most about the internet is the privacy. You can have true free speech and not have to worry about what is going to happen to you, or who is going to take it bad. Privacy can be done different ways however, even though you are publishing your ip address whenever you look for a file over Gnutella, it is kind of like opening your door. Some people respect your privacy and stay away, unless they ask. Others however, like ZeroPaid, barge in, look at everything, and try to steal whatever they can. What an awfull world we live in where people do this regularily (such as script kiddies). Now, i view kiddie porn as free speach. Please don't take this wrong however. Porn, especially kiddie porn is wrong, and takes advantage of people who do not know better. Seeing how this country is supposed to be free though, i see it perfectly ok if you want to corrupt your mind that way. Distributed networks, such as Gntella or Napster, are vessels of free speech, they allow us to say what is good or bad in the digital world. As an example Napster lets us show the MPAA or the publishing companies that it is time to start doing something different in their distribution methods. However, the beauty of the internet is tainted when people take advantage of that free speech and start showing people's personal habits for all to see. This is kind of like running the looser in high school's underwear up the flag pole. Why do we need to show that other people are worse or better than us? Ok, now i am done raving.... Just food for thought.

Because there would be no size taken up by the input devices, the pda like devices could shrink to REALLY small sizes. Unfortunately, there could be a bad side to this. How long would it be before someone could reverse the pathway and be able to control us through our computers? This smells alot like a big brother plan to me, but theoretically, if you can control your computer, couldn't your computer control you? Just something to think about, especially since it seems that every *good* technology created so far has had a bad side to it also. Take nuclear power for one example.....
