Public art is different from publicly-funded art. Public art is fine. I think the monolith is actually quite cool. But I'm glad I didn't pay for it.
The government has no business spending my money on art. If I want art, I'll buy it. Or if some patron wants to buy it or create it and put it on display, then I may or may not look at it -- my choice.
Life determines the amount of discretionary spending in which I may indulge. After food, shelter and clothing, I should choose how the rest of my money is spent. And if it is to be spent on art - then it should be spent on art that I enjoy.
Currently, our company uses Russell Calendar manager. This is a holdover from the days when we had people working on VTnnn terminals as well as PCs and Macs. Besides the VMS, PC and Mac clients, it also has a web interface.
What I like about it:
it schedules the room as well as the participants for a meeting.
it has a holiday database.
proxy access - This is configurable by user. Your employees may view your schedule, but your secretary may modify it.
What I don't like about it:
It doesn't talk to any other applications (exchange, lotus) or devices (palm).

Word 2000 is actually version 9.0. The version I'm using on my NT box is 9.0.2720.
I'm rather amused at the bashing that's going on by people who aren't even using the product - or if they are - taking the time to click on [help] then [about] to see what version they are running.
The IPL (IBM Public License) isn't the GPL or even the LGPL. Among other atrocities, it allows for the distribution in binary-only form. This seems to me to make it more of a freeware or shareware license than a public license.

I've been in this business for a long time (20 years) and at this stage in my career, the time has become more important to me than the overtime.
Work/Life balance has become a recruitment buzzword, but it's very important to those of us with school-aged children. When I was young and single and establishing myself (read: not making nearly what I am now) the money was very important and I was responsible only to myself. Now my paycheck is a little fatter, but my responsibilities extend to several other people. When one of my kids has a soccer game, or karate tournament, or one of their teachers wants to meet with me, I need to put work on hold and be there.
Getting compensating time off allows me to "make up" time with my kids that I may have lost because of work.
This story on the Reuters wire last week says that Okalhoma State University "Police seized the personal computer and a CD recorder from the student's dorm room after university officials were notified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)" and that he could "face criminal charges of copyright infringement."
I submitted this story last week and it was rejected.
FCC attorneys are prepared to block the merger if TimeWarner doesn't open access to it's cable (broadband) lines for competing ISPs.
This is a huge benefit.
Currently, I'm forced to have RoadRunner as my ISP with this cable modem (AT&T). If the FCC forces broadband providers to open the access to their networks and I have a choice of ISPs - the competition should result in lower prices and better service.
<HUMOR>
And as long as I don't have to choose AOL as my ISP, it's a "Good Thing"(tm). </HUMOR>
This type of FUD is typical of the reaction of bigbiz to Napster and other filesharing utilities. Just like in 1980, at the dawn of the VCR age, the MPAA wailed about the death of the movie industry - VCRs and pirating will spell the downfall of Hollywood - nobody will produce movies anymore and it'll be *your* fault!
As soon as the music industry gets it - and creates a business model for digital music - and starts raking in the millions it believes it deserves (while continuing to rip off the artists who are enslaved by it - right on Courtney Love!) The hysterical reporting of such journalistic paragons as CNet will abate.
Everyone I know uses ICQ.
Everyone they know uses ICQ.
Almost everyone I meet (online games) use ICQ.
Almost everyone I know uses AIM (or everybuddy, or TIK- you get the picture). Does that mean that I'm in the majority? Who knows? Just because everyone you know uses ICQ (another fine AOL product, by the way) doesn't mean that a majority if Instant messaging isn't done over AOL's servers.
I get REALLY sick of when companies release statistics that ONLY COUNT AMERICANS!
hmm... not to nitpick - but the FCC isn't a company, it's an agency of the U.S. Federal Government(tm) - and as such - is really only concerned with US companies and US markets. duh.
Not that I'm a fan of theirs - much the opposite is true - but I'd wager that you'd be pretty upset if they tried to regulate communications in Australia.
(The author) makes it clear that this is not "big brother software" he is proposing
No, but it's a Big Brother Tool (tm). What worries me about patches like this, is their potential requirement by the workplace or, more upsetting, the government. Then it is a threat to free speech.
