  1. Woah, Calm Down! on Slackware 8.0 Released · · Score: 2

I don't think Taco meant that Slackware was worthless and should be put out to pasture. I think he was referring to the fact that its still around, despite others (RedHat, Debian, etc) that have exploded in popularity. If anything I think Taco was praising the fact that Slackware has been able to survive for as long as it has.

Hey I hacked thru your firewall. It was a pretty pathetic one. I know nothing of ipchains but its obvious you know even less. And when I did hack it all you had were some crappy 80s MP3s (all of which I had, btw) and some gross German scat films, you sicko!

Just to teach you a lesson I rm -rf *'ed your /home/* directory. I'd post the log of it here, but my files seem to have disappeared. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see what happened to them!

  7. Re:The Rational Behind This on Microsoft EULA stokes crusade · · Score: 1
You personally might not renew your MSDN membership, but I doubt many software shops will be so bold. If your companies bread-and-butter is making Windows-based products, cancelling your MSDN membership is just not an option.

Really this is just a trial ballon that MS is floating. If no huge cry of protest goes up, expect to see this issued as a EULA in a great deal of their software from now on.

  8. The Rational Behind This on Microsoft EULA stokes crusade · · Score: 2
MS knows that using OSS will not require that anything produced with their SDK will neccessitate one to release ones product under the GPL, for example. However, MS is attempting to convince people of this. This is just another layer in their campaign of FUD.

Furthermore by adding this into their EULA, they're also attempting to force people to choose between MS and the rest of the world. In other words, its either Gate's way, or the highway. I wonder if any coding shops will change their practices because of this...

  9. Encyclopedia Brown! on Mad Scientists' Club Returns To Print · · Score: 1

This sounds a lot like the Encyclopedia Brown stories I totally dug as a kid. I remember being thrilled once when I figured out how Bugs Meanie managed to win the raffle. On a similar note, be sure to look at Modern Humor's various parodies of this series.

  10. I Cheat! on Cheaters Sometimes Prosper · · Score: 1
Okay. I confess. I cheat from time to time in games. Mostly Half Life. When the speedcheat was tearing up servers several months ago, I'd use it from time to time to give me a new element to the game. But after a few minutes the newness wears off and the cheat gets boring.

Aimbots are similiar. They're fun for several rounds but once the newness wears off then its not as fun. Of course, half the fun is the reaction of people when the realize someone is cheating. I've never been called a fag so many times in my life! :)

So how do you get rid of a cheater? Simple: ignore him. I think most people who cheat do it for attention, either positive ("Wow you're great!") or negative ("Get off this server, homo!"). If no one pays him any attention he'll leave and go somewhere else. Of course, if you can get an entire server to act like no one is cheating, you can color me *very* impressed.

  11. If you haven't tried Python... on Python Now GPL compatible · · Score: 1
If you've yet to try Python I highly recommend it. I'm just learning to code and both Java and C++ proved frustrating. I learned more with Python in a few weeks than I did in a few months with other languages. Python greatly simplifies coding. You don't need to deal with pointers or garbage collection. You don't have to declare variables and their type before use. Instead one is free to focus on algorithms.

It helps that there is a great tutor mailing list with a very helpful community.

And I can see little reason why anyone should use it for their business.

Well, my mother does some consulting for architechture firms. She has to go to various firms throughout the day. Its much easier for her to upload data to a ASP then download it when she gets to her client.

Since the clients accept only certain types of media (ie: someplaces won't take zips) it makes it difficult to save it locally. So ASPs definately have their uses.

I also have a clip called "Guess Whats In Your Hat?" Two Japanese men would wear a wicket basket on their heads. The bottom of the basket was cut out. The game show host would put various living thing in their hat, and the contestants would have to guess what they were.

Of course it was impossible to guess. The winner was the one who didn't freak out on hearing he had several very large black scorpions crawling around his scalp.
