Wow. I'm so stoked that Rob took my post seriously enough to follow up on it. Yeah, nothing really interesting to add to this other than to point out my involvement in it! :)

I'm sure I'm merely echoing what a lot of Slashdotters feel, but I know that I would buy stock in Mandrake like this. Like Timothy, I could probably afford a grand.

I would really like to see someone from Slashdot interview the founder of the eternal life device, Alex Chiu about 2001. I'm sure if Leonard F. Wheat can find all sorts of hidden metaphors in anagrams and the shape of the Discovery's engines, just imagine what Alex Chiu can find!

  6. OT: eGold? on Amazon Tries to Turn a Profit · · Score: 2
Why would I use eGold in place of cash. This is another business model that baffles me. Its like Beanz and Flooz and such. What it reminds me of is this: Remember when you used to go into video arcades? Sometimes the machines ran off tokens and not quarters. So you bought a bunch of tokens, and at the end of the day you always had a few worthless tokens left over?

This is what all those alternative forms of web-currency reminds me of. Why would I spend my cash to get something that I can use...just like cash!

  11. Just Die Already! on Quadruple Interview With Amiga 4.0 Developers · · Score: 1
When will the Amiga die? Please, its time to take it off life support and let it slide off into the great beyond. This OS just gets passed from one European company to another, like a joint at Dennis Hopper's ranch. I'm beginning to think its just some kinda white elephant gift that CEOs give to one another.

Please, the Amiga wants to die. Let it.

  12. Your Firewall on HP to Use Debian for Linux Development · · Score: 2

Hey I hacked your so-called "l33t" firewall. You really need to learn how to properly set up a firewall. I mean I don't know *anything* about firewalling but I could probably do a better job. Not that it was worthwhile in the first place. All it had was some sick German porn and crappy MP3s, all of which I had anyways.

  15. Two Things on Color Photography with B&W Film · · Score: 1
First off, this is stunning. I always picture pre-color photography times as being a bit drab and lifeless. Everyone around then clearly wore nothing but sepia-toned clothing. To be able to see something like this is really beautiful.

Secondly, here's a quote from the page explaining how it was done:Shown here is one of the thousands of glass plate negatives made by Prokudin-Gorskii. The negatives served two purposes. Primarily they were used to produce positive glass slides for his illustrated lectures about the Russian Empire. Prokudin-Gorskii projected the slides through the red, green, and blue filters of a device known as a "magic lantern" which superimposed the images onto a screen resulting in a full-color picture.

  20. Re:IPv4 Exhaustion? Where? on A New Approach to IP Address Exhaustion · · Score: 2
Who has a real story of an IP address shortage? I mean, something like an ISP saying "Sorry, we'd like to give you a DSL line, but we've just run out of IP addresses".

This hasn't happened...yet. However, it will occur not too far down the road. Actually, I should rephrase that. Unless IPv6 is used, increasingly cumbersome methods of increasing that available IP pool will need to be used.

The growth of broadband, WAP devices and talk of such things as ovens, air conditioners and god-only knows what else being hooked up to the internet will rapidly drain this pool. This is why IPv6 is neccessary. For a really good article on it, check out this CNet story.
