encouraging? I don't think so. I've seen tons of anime, including a fair-sized chunk of hentai, and I never felt encouraged to rape and kill. After all. . . it's just a cartoon, and just as I'm not killing and raping, I'm also not building secret labs under my house, or believing my doggie could help solve mysteries.

When I think about anime being anti-woman, I think about Wrath of the Ninja, Kite, Mononoke, and several others where central characters are female. And not the big-tittied Slayers/DirtyPair kinda women either!

(OT)Personal TV rocks. I absolutely hate the menus' look and feel with TiVo *AND* especially directTV. For me, E* is cheaper for more channels I watch (29.99 for 100+ channels) and it's menu system is big, clear, and easy to navigate. My in-laws have DirectTV and I can't stand it.

30 second skips make commercials wiz by. I find myself pausing all the time (trip to fridge, crapper etc.) just so I'm watching delayed so I can skip commercials. 'cept maybe the superbowl...I usually like some of those commercials.

My picture quality is better than what I've seen from TiVo, although I've never seen DirecTiVo to see it's digital-to-digital quality. I record anything I watch on payperview and the picture and sound quality is as good as when I watch it the first time.

I never thought I would enjoy the personal TV stuff and had originally planned to remove the 17.7gb drive in my recvr and stick in an old 3gb crap drive. After using it for a while though, I don't wanna give it up. Why would I want TiVo to record shows I *may* watch when personalTV records ONLY what I want? I'll stick with picking my own entertainment thanks.

Try DSS. I've got dishnetwork and it's cheaper than cable anyway. I get 115 or so channels for 29.99....whereas cable here (shitty comcast) is 35 bucks or so for about 50 channels (no cartoon network). Plus, I get digital audio whenever available....including the Simpsons.

I've never had digital cable, so don't know the boxes at all, but my sat. receiver has digital audio/video outputs. For dumping to PC, I've been meaning to get a card with svideo inputs so I can ditch the $40 WinTV Go/coax job I've been using.

For the 7200 model displayer (echostar), I've got svideo and optical audio outs. Oh, and the usual coax and RCA outs still exist. For all the folks drooling over TiVo, both DirectTV and Dish/Echostar offer set-tops that have Tivo or TiVo-like functionality. At this point, I'd be an unhappy camper to have to give this up.
It's got a 17gb HDD, which can be replaced if you so desire. With the 17gb drive, I've so far managed to have 7 hours recorded, and then rewind through the 'cache' to what was on 7 hours earlier. I assume this means I'll have 14+ hours worth of space without swapping out the drive. I've only ever needed about 10 hours worth saved, so I have yet to hit my maximum.

The only thing that I've seen come down the line is in FY2000 performance reviews. I noticed a small section which reflects your salary versus the industry avg. for your area. I had a .91 :( This means my salary is about 9% lower than avg.

Contrary to what many have expressed here, I have made a decent wage for the region even as a contractor while in college. At one point as a contractor, I had graduated with my BS, and I asked for a raise based on level of education. I asked for about 21% more, but they gave me 67%, so no complaints on my part. Mind you, this was only about 15.50 in the end, but at that point, it was about average for the small town I lived in. I've since got about another 67% for becoming an annual employee. So now I'm at about 46k in a area where the avg. salary is few grand less. Within a few years, I should be around 60k (topping aout aroudn 70k), which coupled with my wife's salary, should be enough for us to live happily.

I love the benefits, and I absolutely love not having to live in a large city for a decent job. Actually, just the large city part was enough to convince me. I live in a mountainous area now. Let me consider this, crime/smog/traffic/high cost of living/etc. *or* less crime (no place is perfect)/cleaner air/less traffic/national parks and other wonderful scenery/lower cost of living/etc...

It may not be true for anyone, but for me, I'm much happier making a little less, but living some place I love.

You wanna talk violent games??? How about all the shit kids played when I was a tike. Things like cops-n-robbers, cowboys-n-indians and such. We played with toy guns, or worse, BB guns (IMHO real weapons) and it was lots of fun, but much more violent, not to mention realistic, than video games. We pointed actual gun-shaped thingies (as seen on TV) at each other and pulled the trigger. Yet, we didn't go get high caliber weapons and kill folks/ourselves. Why not? Because from the oldest memories I have, a game was a game, it was not reality. Kids so young that they can't make this distinction aren't the ones killing folks. They're 3 yrs. old.

IMHO, moving polygons around on a screen, is so far detached from reality, that anyone over the age of 5 who can't make the distinction b/t it and reality, have other far more serious issues. Also note, even though you may not be able to admit it, your kid may not be the quickest monkey in the barrel, and may need help.

There is one, incredibly simple yet seemingly unadoptable, solution that keeps nagging at me. They're children, not independent adults. Parents, if your kid is doing something you don't like, it's your obligation to do something about it. If little Timmy is playing a game you don't like, take it away. From your standpoint, these games are practically a weapon, and as such, would you let your kids play with them? Don't let your child play with a 'loaded weapon' (I cringe using that metaphor) and then be shocked when he hurts someone.

Another thought. There are lots of adults that play these games too. And for better or worse, it's not your place to tell them what they can or can't do. For me personally, I've got no problem with it. From Quake or Carmageddon (and Worms!)to Re-volt or The Incredible Machine, they're games, and as such, do not influence my life more than the time spent indulging in them. I don't need my life altered because mom or dad can't say no.

If I want to watch the latest Hollywood explosion movie, or just run over pedestrians in Carmageddon, it's not up to the new players in the blame game to take that away.
