  1. Re:Not surprised. on Radiation-eating Fungi · · Score: 1

So you're saying that gamma rays are not considered radioative radiation even though it is often produced from nuclear reactions such as that from an atomic bomb? Besides, from TFA: "The role of melanin in microorganisms living in high electromagnetic radiation fluxes is even more intriguing when the pigment is considered from a paleobiological perspective." So it would seem that the particular radiation they used in the research is an EM radiation as well.

  2. Not surprised. on Radiation-eating Fungi · · Score: 1

I'm not saying this sort of research shouldn't be done. However, the mere fact that radiation is capable of stimulating growth for some organisms isn't too impressive. Look at any plants that contain chlorophyll. That's "radiation stimulated growth" right there. Yes, sunlight is a form of radiation, too.

Ancient Chinese texts have always been written in top-down, right-left fashion, although modern day Chinese is almost always written in horizontal, from left to right. In our case since all kanji, katakana and hiragana are read upright even if the reading direction is horizontal, it makes sense to have upright smilies as well. Furthermore, many Japanese smilies are obvious adaptations of expressive techniques used in comic books/anime. It doesn't surprise me at all why the Japanese smilies and western smilies look so different.

    1. Put a portable heater near the sensor. Result: "Fire hazard ahead!"
    2. Use worn out tires and grease them. Result: "Severe oil spill!"
    3. Have your friends all fart in the car at the same time. Result: "Beware of skunk roadkill!"
Obviously the warning system has to be smart enough to take out the outlier in the data collection. Problem is if it uses a large sample size to determine who the outlier is it defeats the purpose of the system: to warn people of possible hazards ahead of time.

  5. Re:So when a tazer hits you on Scientists Say Nerves Use Sound, Not Electricity · · Score: 1

Well if you coat yourself with a conductive material, you would become in theory a sphere and thus have no electricity on the inside of the sphere. First of all, you only get no electric field/charge on the inside if you are a perfect conductor. Second of all, the shape doesn't matter. A uniformly charged sphere is a perfectly physical object as long as it is NOT a perfect conductor.
  6. Inherent Psychological Differences? on The Hidden Engineering Gender Gap · · Score: 2, Insightful

As far as I know, all evidences suggest that there are indeed inherent psychological differences between male and female. Personally I consider David Reimer to be a prime example of this. For those that don't want to read the wikipedia entry, David Reimer was a man that had his genital accidentally destroyed during infancy. He was then raised as a girl per the suggestion of Dr. John Money, who belived that psychological differences in genders are developed, not inherent. To summarize the long story, it completely failed. David Reimer resumed to live as a male once he discovered the truth and later commited sucide (which may or may not be related to his experience at youth).
