  1. Huh? on Blind Sue AOL for ADA Non-Compliance · · Score: 1
As a blind person myself I can't see this (some pun intended) winning in court. The problem with blind indiviuals having easy access will not go away soon. It's the technology that we all ove to hate that is at fault. I am a visual developer (PowerBuilder) and have enough of my eyesight left to see good enough to do my work. The day will come, however, when my eyes will deteriorate to the point to where I can't (I have a rare disease called Choroidermeia - not sure of the spelling). Not because of the concepts involved but becuase of the fact that computing is a very visual thing.

Speech recognition and speech output is a potential answer but the mainstream does not need this so it will not be fully developed and will always be missing some element that will prevent it from being a complete solution.

Take someone to court over this??? Give me a break!

  2. What next? on Microsoft Announces W2K Pricing · · Score: 2

I guess the only thing left to charge us for is to speak the name of their products. Maybe we will require a CAL to acces the web server and a CSL (client speech license) to speak of it. Think of it, each aritcle on /. will then be generating revenue for the financially struggling M$. If we refuse to pay the dues, we are hauled off to court for violating their license agreement. I think it's time to look harder at Solaris. Let's see now, it's cheaper, faster, more reliable, more open, more scalable, and runs on at two platforms (which is no longer true of NT).

I agree but where is the software? As a two-time Alpha owner I can say it is pretty rough living with the scarcity of native apps. Those that you do find are twice the price. If someone where to give me any non-server system out there it would be an SGI.

  4. Re:This article perpetuates false stereotypes... on How Not to Attract Geeks · · Score: 1
That's right. I am a geek but I'm not the pocket protector type (though I'm not the 'hot hunk' type either). I married a cheerleader though I was always a shy and sensitive person who never dated in high school. I enjoy gardening but would rather spend the day on a Honda dirt bike. I find computers interesting and challenging but wouldn't get my feelings hurt a bit if I never touched one again.

We are complex people and it is dangerous to start stereotyping people based on a single past-time or personallity trait. Not everyone is the same just because they may have something in common (eg computer skills).

Delphi is a great tool and I look forward to seeing it available on Linux. It is light years ahead of VB. I recently started working on my master of software engineering degree and have been introduced to Eiffel. This is a totally OO language that looks very elegant to me so far. It is available on both Windows and Linux. You can get a fully functional (not time-limited)copy of it here. The only thing with the free copy is that is gives a pop-up for 10 seconds each time you launch the tool that asks you to buy it.
