I am *gasp* a Web designer and have been pineing for a solid OS/Design App package that ends the M$ pain.
Soon I can uninstall windows from my workstation and liberate myself to do *real* work.
While I love Photoshop and Illustrator, the fact that it runs only on a M$ operating system has been a major source of fustration when dealing with a deadline and having to recover from a crash.
I'm not too fanatical about the quality of Corel's design apps in regard to interface design and stability. Yet my hope is that it will get Adobe's attention and port Photoshop and Illustrator over to Linux.
Geek Industries LLC and CEO Mindstorm have filed a patent (# 666,666,666) on a biological process called "breathing". Developed in the precambrian era, this process is used by millions of organisims worldwide.
Is estitmated that if the patent is approved, Geek Indusries can impose a $5 per breath royalty fee. Mindstorm quoted as saying "One of my ancestors invernted this process. It has been passed down from generations. Unfortuately we're just getting around to patenting it. That's life in a dot.com start up."
When asked what would happen if people could not aford to breathe, he said "Well, your just going to have to hold your breath."
Perhaps the whole Y2k issue should teach something about being humans. We fsck up. That's our nature. We are imperfect beings who are limited by our humanness. Only a higher being (if you believe in one) can be perfect.
Thus the things we create are limited by our humaness. Those who do not understand this are doomed to commit hubris repeatedly.
I'm just as much of a/. geek as the rest of us here. Friends accuse me of being a turbo nerd. But there are times when we get too wrapped up in the "coolness" of the technology we fail to see the global long-term effects.
But on a postive note: my best hope is if when the lights go out, and the beepers and wireless phones don't work, and the e-mail stops, people will redefine their relationship with technology and reconnect as human beings without the mediation of gadgets.
Stuff like this sorely reminds me of my high school days. I love fine art and theatre, I'm sweet and romantic, yet all the girls wanted was an alpha male. It's a shame that such mallicious memes exist in the media and society. We have so much to offer. I've wasted so many brian cells trying to figure dating out. Guess we'll be reading about that superficial alpha female getting date raped or slapped around by her "perfect" boyfriend in the papers. some people never grow up.
That comment was directed towards /.'ers who think that web designers are not real geeks.
I wonder even if the FCC does open up the FM frequency for microbroadcasts, how does the guy in the garage fare against the mega media machine?
The best analogy I can come up with is driving a tiny Honda with a double tractor trailer tailgating you.
I'm so happy with this annoucement!

I got there first! Talk to my law firm: Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe.
A very scary patent indeed, be very afraid!
