  1. Re:Belief is not necessarily the truth on Louisiana Passes Intelligent Design Law · · Score: 1

Now that I think about it... ID would be a perfect way to teach kids what ISN'T science. There's TONS of information and examples out there as to why ID isn't science. I seem to remember way back when learning scientific method having lessons about what is a good experiment and what is not. So why not teach ID and all it's EPIC fail as a scientific theory? Won't the fundamentalist be happy then? ID's being taught in the classroom. Just not the way they want.

Actually, the belief that evolution is a FACT is incorrect. No scientific theory is fact. But a scientific theory is actually BETTER than fact. Scientific theories are UPHELD and SUPPORTED by all known observable phenomena. It gives us a basis to determine natural outcomes. IF an individual fact contradicts a theory (say, evolution) it usually means one of two things. 1) either we haven't looked deep enough into the phenomena to see how is actually adheres to the theory (like ID's bacterial flagellum argument), or 2) the theory itself is incorrect and requires refinement in its definitions (this RARELY happens). The point is that the THEORY of evolution is in better than having facts. It was not fact that a missing link was found between fish and four legged creatures, but evolution predicted it. And then it became fact. It was a fact (according to some) that the bacterial flagellum was "irreducibly complex" and did not fit into evolution. Further examination of the structure revealed that not only did it not go against evolution, but firmly supported it. Scientific theory is BETTER than fact. If you use the words UPHELD and SUPPORTED instead of FACT, it is a lot more difficult to argue against evolution. I would like to point out that I am NOT an atheist. I do not subscribe to the Judeo-christian monotheistic belief, but I do believe in something. There seem to be a lot of scientific fanaticism on slashdot. The bible and other such religion texts are purely literature than man created to describe God (or what they call god) and has very little relevance to the actual thing itself.

Yet. The thing is... most of what you're talking about that makes a bad game is bugs. Things crashing, things not working the way they're supposed to. The thing about B movies (or at least the "cult" hits) are that they are functional as movies. The bad games that you are probably thinking of don't even function properly as games. As the games industry matures, I'm sure more and more games will be less "broken" and actually function as games. At which point I'm sure we'll see tons of playable, crappy, cult hits. In fact, IMO Myst is the first of those BAD cult hit games. The game sucked - sorry to everyone that likes it, it was an interactive photoCD that destroyed the point and click adventure genre. The only reason it was successful at all was because it was the CD-ROM killer app. But at least it worked. (Also, the original version was done in HyperCard - does anyone even know what that is? It came free with System 7 on Macintosh).

I was just wondering if you saw any parallels to Sony in it's third generation and Nintendo in it's third generation. It seems that you marketing strategies have sort of become the same and that Sony is suffering the same accusations of hubris that Nintendo did. Nintendo in their third generation stuck with a proprietary media format, assumed that their brand loyalty would carry them to the lead in the console war. This as you know allowed Sony to take the lead with thier innovative marketing strategies (which seem to have all but disappeared). Nintendo was just coming off losing market share to the genesis, just as Sony has just come off losing market share to the Xbox. If you do see parallels, how do you intend to avoid the beating that Nintendo took in their third generation? If you don't see an parallels, how do you explain the similarities that I described above?
