Close your eyes for a minute, and imagine what it would be like if the public suddenly gained interest in a manned mission to Mars. Think if Bush or Gore, as the next President, made a speech ala JFK. Think if in 2009, NASA launched a ship for Mars.
A crappy movie or two would be a small price to pay for such an accomplishment.
The one good thing about the movie is that it is a realistic portrayal of what an actual mars mission could look like in thirty years.
Umm, an actual mission to Mars 30 years from now will look like the Mars Climate Orbitor 18 crashing into the same spot(and for the same reason) as all the other ones have, unless Congress takes its fingers of NASA's neck.

There are certain times when freedom and the value of human life conflict. I'm not talking about a person's own life, but the lives of others. Usually, this is a more passive problem, but of course if you see your neighbor's house on fire and don't call 911 that was passive too.
Also, though I have much love for the free market, I think it has little value in the health-care industry. As another poster said, the point of medical care is not to maximize profits, but to maximize lives saved. There are some people who it simply will not be econmically wise to treat, but I believe they still deserve treatment.
Unfortunetely, I doubt there'd be any chance for the people of this country to have an intelligent discussion, since few seem to value freedom or life.

I haven't played this game much, bt I know at least one part these complaints must come from. It's a mini-game where you are in a raft traveling down a river and the whole point in to push the raft to your side of the river. Apparently the best way Nintendo could imitate the rowing of oars was to have people rotate the joystick.
Well thats OK, but the problem is that when playing against the computer you have to rotate so god damn fast that you're forced to put your palm on it. Well if you play this game once or twice, you quickly have a problem, that being that it hurts like fuck to spin that little joystick into your palm.

About the only good post at the top-level that I saw was the one by fwr. The issue here is whether Transmeta should release the source for the code-morphing software. The problem obviously is that the software is tied to a hardware product, but I didn't see you guys cutting Apple any slack on releasing the MacOS source, when clearly that software is what gets them the hardware revenues. This, it seems to me, is a very similar situation.
Also, you can make excuses about how Linus doesn't run the company, but the fact is that if he's against closed-source in principle, he shouldn't work for them. He may not have control over the company's actions, but he does over his own.

An 80MHz PowerPC running Linux can do 4,000 audio streams and my old 5200/75 LC(75MHz PowerPC 603) couldn't even play one RA stream(or an MP3 for that matter).
5MHz+Linux = 4,000x better. Spiffy.

In totally unrelated news, Slashdot(TM) creator Rob Malda(TM) says that VA Linux(TM) has been purchased by fighters.net, and then Capcom, and then Sega.
Malda(TM) insists this move will have no effect on Slashdot(TM), and that he still has total editorial control(yes, Malda(TM), as a minor employee, is apparently able to dictate terms to his bosses).
Maybe this guy is wrong, maybe he's right, but about 95% of the posts here just mock him without actually addressing anything he's saying.
About the only good post at the top-level that I saw was the one by fwr. The issue here is whether Transmeta should release the source for the code-morphing software. The problem obviously is that the software is tied to a hardware product, but I didn't see you guys cutting Apple any slack on releasing the MacOS source, when clearly that software is what gets them the hardware revenues. This, it seems to me, is a very similar situation.
Also, you can make excuses about how Linus doesn't run the company, but the fact is that if he's against closed-source in principle, he shouldn't work for them. He may not have control over the company's actions, but he does over his own.
If I was a web designer, and the KKK or some Neo-Nazis or the Christian Coalition(they're all in the same category in my mind) came to me to ask me to design a site, I'd tell them to go fuck themselves.
