asleep?
So, I get home really tired and go take a nap... Then, I wake up, log on slashdotm, and that's the headlines I read:
- Duke Nukem Forever Teaser Released
- IE 8(!) Passes Acid2 Test(!!!!)
I'm sure there's an twilight zone episode just like that!
Hulu serves no user-submitted content and nothing but shows Also, the content on Hulu is only available to US-based IPs. It's not even an global market effort.
They just want the revenue they're loosing for not having their shows on itunes anymore.
"requires more resources", "is less widespread than the competition", "it is hard to resist buying each new version" are these the real drawbacks? And where's the comparisons the headline talks about?
It looks like they picked 4 fanboys comments and posted them. And why are there 2 comments about Vista, and just one of each other oses? Because windows has a bigger market share?
Every time I read about linux's growth, and what should be done to attract
windows user to gnu/linux, i get really pissed. Linux should never be compared
to windows, nor should they compete for the same "market". The phylosophy behind
them is different, it was made, from ground up, with a different goal in mind.
This "is linux ready for desktop?" thing is leading linux towards what linux
users hates most: windows. What the Linux community should focus on is: how could
we make linux more appealing to *us*, the linx community. The people that already
chose linux instead of other oses. Every new distribution, every new
linux software I see, is trying, very hard, to be more windows-like, to emulate
windows features, to be more "user-friendly". And most of the people using linux
sees this as a positive thing. It's not! Linux applications are getting bloated, slow and
insecure, hence "easy". Isn't that the things we're trying to run away from,
isn't it the very reason we bash windows and its applications? So why on earth
should we care about linux gaining market, if it utimately leads to emulate
windows in every (bad) aspect? Not even WINE wants to emulate it!;)
I think what i'm trying to say is: forget the market, we don't need it. As long as we keep
using it, working on it, linux we'll be fine. No drivers for this new wi-fi device? Up our
sleeves! Let's focus on making it good, making it like we really think it should be. And if it leads
towards broader acceptation, fine. If not, who cares?

"pry it out of my hands at gnupoint"
If his running Gnome (and it looks like he is), it's probably gnome + gdesklets. http://www.gdesklets.org/
