The US has laws allowing that any Radio/Television medium that gives time to one candidate/party in a political race has to give equal time to opposition. This situation is one 'old media' candidate away from being brought up here.

As a recipient of a degree in programming, I know first hand that anything you do at any college becomes the property of that institution. Do a ground breaking medical study, write the greatest OS of all time, it is the property of the University, so don't be so appauled at a university claiming ownership of something you turn in.
As for the turnitin issue, the idea is a bit scary from the big brother stand point, and if the paper was submitted in a public k-12 situation it should absolutly be the students right to stand against this. As for Private schools or Universities, you have the issue that when you turn something in it becomes the property of the institution to do what they please with, so this should be fine. Plus I think it potentially protects the writer, because I found that handing in papers in college became extremly difficult because professors decided that no one could come up with a similar thought to something written somewhere, and often made me go out and hunt for a source that had an idea that I came up with independently. I handed in a paper in which I cited every letter of every word and quoted my 1st grade teacher as the source...The professor was not ammused.

After reading that lengthy and quite uninformative article, I am left thinking that people should be concerned with their country's governments approving these standards rather than the group writing them. The UN holds 0 authority over any of it's member nations, and the fact that the EU is not performing its due diligance in researching these standards before approving them is no ones fault but those in the EU.
Since the EU is terribly ineffecient and stumbles over itself in almost all decisions it makes, I wouldn't count on a sudden change of pace... I also wouldn't expect to see any of these policies being a factor when the FCC goes so far to protect consumers that it won't let failing satellite companies (TV and Radio) merger to save themselves.

The US needs to elect a morally corupt President who has an unknown morally sound doppelganger, hope the newly elected President has a heart attack, then insert the doppelganger into power. He can than have his CPA best buddy come in and balance the budget over dinner, as well as reform the whole government over the course of 3 or 4 weeks, until the First Lady realizes he is a different person. All the country's problems would be solved.

*In this instance we ignore the fact that the President doesn't have nearly as much power as all you wonderful posters' think and that congress is responsible for the majority of the problems in this country...

Instead of thinking of ways to mess with this unimaginably huge closed system we are living in, Why can't we just accept that this planet/solar system/universe is more complex than SUV's releasing Carbon into the Air and let the Earth take its own course. While I think every effort should be made to improve our current technologies and move away from a costly oil based economy, It is irresponsible and short sighted to throw up your hands, claim carbon, oil and SUV's are the source of a slight/gradual change of what was the norm for a short period of time 30 years ago and continue this path of panic. Real scientists who do real research aren't in agreement as to wether or not natural cycles are the cause of "global warming" (a terribly misleading and politicized name) why are the masses? There was a hole in the o-zone layer, we stopped pumping Chlorine and Flourine into the air and the Earth is taking its course to solve the problem...Anyone who thinks more action than that is warrented in this instance is uninformed or irresponsible.

This is not News and the iPods aren't nearly as popular as ESPN makes it seem. I know for a fact that only the small amount of teams who have digital video systems (Red Sox) have the means to convert and load all the Video. These Digital Video systems are not the standard accross the league and most players get video of their at bats/ pitching sequences on DVD for road trips. However, the popularity of iPods as music/video players among MLB teams can not be argued.
