Everyone else is always in a cult. It couldn't be that different people like different systems... for valid reasons.... could it? I personally like my iPad and can see why a lot of others would too. I don't think people who want a tab are broken or stupid or evil. I just worry that reviews that are always grading Apple's competition on a curve will result in more people unhappy with what they get because it wasn't the iPad killer they thought it was. But if they like it in the end, so what to you and me?
omgzorz!!! Something about some software isn't perfect for someone and so that someone is saying its gonna suckzorz for like everyone on earth and we should avoid it.
It's pretty simple: if you don't like Ubunutu's philosophy, don't use it. Use one of the other 10,000 Linux distros out there, each with its own Kool-Aid drinking evangelists. Pick a fight over what kind of kernel it has with Linus. Get that Australian dude's feelings hurt over the scheduler. It's all part of LinuxLand.
Personally, I agree with Walter Mossberg's latest review of Ubuntu. It's close, but not ready, for wide-scale desktop implementation. But like anything that was once or is currently the fief of geek lords, they scorn the entry of computer peasants. Remember when AOL connecting to the Internet was going to destroy it? Well, I don't know about you, but I sure prefer Intertubes 2007 to Gopher, Usenet, FTP, and e-mail between a couple of places connected by 56k.
The beauty of computers is that there is always new GeekLand. If Linux is "betraying" itself by actually getting on the desktop and competing with the Kingdom of Hell, Redmond, then move on to *BSD or something else. There's always more. What about the new GNU Kernel whatitscalled?
Me, I'd like to see Linux with a 25% desktop share in 5 years. It ain't going to happen if everything is still a dot file and there are no drivers and people have to pretend they are using a PDP-11 half the time.
It will be over if (1) the time for appeal passes without appeal, or (2) the appellate court renders a decision affirming the summary judgment. If the Circuit court reverses, it's game on. Don't uncork the champagne yet.
Thanks. Up until I read this insight, I was a full believe in this hoax called global warming. But the sheer force of this comment changed my mind. None of these scientists ever thought about VENUS before. Only people on this site who maybe had an intro astronomy class in college and think they're smarter than everyone could have caught that one..... oh wait, Carl Sagan discussed this 30 years ago in Cosmos. Next.
Lol. You're parroting Crichton's book exactly. Polly wanna cracker?
These terrible terrible people trying to stop mankind from messing something up, they might have exagerated a little bit. Let's ignore them and just keep doing what we're doing. lol.
Ugh. At least the cosmic ray "theory" is new. All of these the sun did it, its water vapor, but there's more ice in Antartica!, etc. etc. are old, tired, and only a google search away from dispatch.
Sure, Apple, like any profit-motivated corporation, has done its share of lame things. Furthermore, there is nothing in the rules that says they won't, but to annoint them the next evil empire before Microsoft has stopped being it, and before Apple is really in any position to get there is sorta weird. Just a couple of months ago, people were saying it would be Google.
What makes MS evil, at least to me, isn't their size or prominence. It's nothing more than they don't have the end user in mind with their products. They don't make a piece of software meant to work with everything and meant to stand the test of time. They make it to trap you into the next upgrade, and get you hooked on non-standard features. Despite this, they still make a decent program every once in a while. Hell, I run Parallels primarily so that I can use Outlook.
But what's amazing here is this: you're citing Apple's anti-DRM rumbling as evidence of them being evil? Oy vey. Now that just shows that you're reaching.
I'm a lawyer too that deals with employee mobility issues as a specialty, and I wouldn't be giving out legal advice in the comments section on Slashdot.
To answer the question of whether you can be sued for leaving, the answer is yes. You can always be sued. Is there a basis? Chances are they are just trying to chill competition, but they may feel that you were enticed to leave due to some trade secret information (customer data?) that you had access to.
These lawsuits are often aimed at the competing company more than the departing employee.
So the five apps you use work perfectly. Great. Good for you. But that's your experience. The plural of anecdote is not "evidence."

Not enforceable in California. Bus & Prof Code Section 16600.
