  3. It's so you know it worked on Possible Pics Of The New Apple Mouse · · Score: 1

I think it is to give the user some feedback that their keystroke or mouse-click was successfull. Just like the little beeps on microwave buttons.

If it didn't make any noise, most people wouldn't feel like they had done anything, and if the computer didn't respond immediately, they would think that their click didn't work and they would start clicking again.

I would find it very annoying to not have the click. I guess you could replace the click with some kind of physical feeling that tells the user "you did it right," but it would probably be hard to do that without making a noise.

  5. Books In Print on CDDB-like Database for ISBN? · · Score: 2

Some students at my university recently completed a similar project. Their project was to work with the bookstore and professors to automate the book adoption process.

They used a database called "Books In Print." I believe that the bookstore received this in paper form and they were able to buy a license for an electronic format (CD-ROM I think) but it was pretty expensive. I don't know if this is available online or not, but I'm pretty sure you can purchase CD's and load it into your own database. This would take a lot of space, so you might try searching for "Books In Print" to see if that turns up anything online for you to check into.

    Hope that helps a little.

I don't know much about hardware routers, but I know that a Linux box will do the job nicely.

  7. I've made a player that uses the following on Dell To Make MP3 Home Stereo Component · · Score: 1

Each directory on the CD (it scans recursively) is considered a playlist. The code scans the cd for directories containing mp3s and keeps an alphabetical list of those. It then scans those directories for mp3's and makes an alphabetical list of tracks within the playlist. The user can then use an infrared remote to scan through the disk one track at a time, with shuffle mode on, at the playlist level, or even type a number to go directly to a track.

I have one of these running at home and I'm about to convert the code to use a hard drive and use it in the car.

I have considered building these for sale, but I don't have any good connections to get hardware cheap, so it wouldn't be very profitable for me and not worth the time.

If anyone is interested in one of these and has some extra hardware, I'd consider converting your hardware into a player.

My email is ericwyles [at] hotmail [dot] com.

I'm not saying I would do this for certain -- I'm just throwing the idea out to see what you all think. Depending on the response I'll decide whether or not to pursue this idea further.

  11. People are the biggest security holes... on Microsoft Develops Security-Path for Outlook · · Score: 1

It doesn't matter what Microsoft (or anyone else) does or does not do to increase their security, people will always be the biggest security hole.

I have read comments saying that they should do away with the auto-launch, but this would still leave you dependant on the people to not launch the offending files.

With any new functionality that is added to a system, there is another opportunity for people to screw something up. The ILOVEYOU virus just happened to be distributed through email, but it could have been distributed through other channels. If a virus was mailed out on disk with a note that said "Put this in your floppy drive and run everything on the disk" no one would argue against the fact that the people caused damage to themselves. No one would try to blame the post office or the manufacturer of the floppy disk. Any security model is reliant on people.

For every door or window I put in my house, I give someone another easy way to break in. Should we stop using doors and windows (no pun intended)?

A user that installs Linux at home, runs around as root all day, and runs everything that is emailed to him is just as vulnerable to these attacks as a windows user.

Ultimately people are to blame for these incidents and IMHO the best solution is user education. We don't let people drive a car without a license, not just because they may hurt themselves, but because they may hurt others through their carelesness.

  21. Something is lost with custom CD's on Feedback: Who Owns Ideas · · Score: 1

My problem with the custom CD approach is that you lose the continuity and theme of having an entire album by one artist. If this model were to become the way most music was distributed, I think we would all be missing out on a lot of good music.

Often times I am first interested in hearing an artist because of one song, but after I buy the album I find that it isn't even close to my favorite song by that artist. Many other songs on the album may be a lot better, but with a custom CD I would have only picked the 1 song from that artist and would have missed out on a lot of good music.
