but really, i remember seeing a story about some router problems they were having, and that really made me wonder what it looks like. Rack-mounted xeons? raised floor? retinal scan? classified?
Hey cmdrtaco, how about some pictures of your server room? Sorry if this is off topic but your valiant story and compliments to your team are screaming for photos to back it all up. What does it look like in the/. server room? This is a question I've had for a long time.
"The federal appeals court earlier this summer threw out Jackson's ruling breaking Microsoft into two companies, removed the judge from the case and harshly criticized his comments to news media in which he compared Gates to Napoleon and the company to a drug-dealing street gang. Through a spokeswoman, Jackson declined comment Tuesday. "
If one of his rulings can be thrown out, why not the others?
I agree that the judge was psycho in his comparisons, probably all part of the plan.
I think the 'spokeswoman' was Mrs. Jackson.
"You answer the phone, if it's the press - tell them NO COMMENT..."
"I'll be in the den, counting my swiss bank account balances and other miscellaneous kick-backs from harvey'snew wallpaper (streched to fit, of course.)"
smoking is bad. whats up with the damn posts that are getting moderated into my view? i would like to complain. could someone point me to the end of the line? hopefully i don't have to walk past too many more brainless posts before i find out information related to the ON TOPIC question of whether tech companies are socially responsible. OF COURSE IT DEPENDS ON THE COMPANY MOSTLY. the question is: the industry as a whole, what is the situation like? i'll read on now.
Right on dude, I hate the mainstream media./. rulez. those dumb bastards over at NBC have their friggin heads up their asses. waaay up their asses, and still they have the complete, undivided attention of three quarters of the people in the United States. Stop the Braindrain!!!!;)
(can i get a MODR8SHUN, I think that was pretty damn funny?);)
yeah, apparently it is this fancy software that makes it possible to 'share programs' (direct quote from some guy from some radio music magazine. dumbass) of music between college dorm rooms. it's all tom petty and that kinda music though. i saw some crystal method, which is good for all those ecstacy freaks at college. but it's all legal, they were talking to the head dude at USC and he even said so. -my report on dateline's "NEWS" they should call dateline "news for sheep, stuff that's lies" hehehe.
it's about time these companies started playing a little nicer.. but i can just see the wired news story now.. "Joint MPG-8 Codec from MS and Real Crashes Systems / has Security Hole / Collecting Customer Information."
ds20. make me laugh. that's like the crappiest alpha there is. thats like me giving a panhandler a penny. compaq is the enemy (i'm typing on a compaq keyboard, using a compaq mouse, on a compaq deskpro p2 box, with sessions open to two different alphas (both better than ds20, i don't have a session to that server open right now) using m$ft software all around (except vms).
compaq is the biggest computer company in the world (yes, bigger than 'big blue'), they make me CRINGE!!! but then, i'm at work right now so it can't be all that bad...
i think taxes suck because: they make me have less money hot grits cost money less money=less hot grits, and less hot grits make harvey something something go crazy? DON'T MIND IF I DOOO!!!! but seriously folks, did you think that since all commerce is moving towards the internet, that the governments and beaurocracies of the planet are just going to say, "darn! no more tax money. oh well, lets just stop all government services."? i didn't think so. we've got a good argument for why there shouldn't be taxes, but they're the government. it doesn't matter what we say. mainstream media will just make it look like 50/50 and make everyone feel stupid for not wanting it. or something
at least not where i work #machines: ~40 #NT: * #vms: 6 #unix: 2 #linux: 0 we will have w2k directory one day... which the ms rep said was better than novell's (embed grain salt) but novell and linux? should be interesting.
How long do you think it will be before we will be able to go on to the internet and watch any peice of visual media ever created (sesame street episode 65- canadian version of course)?? i say 5 years. and you can quote me on that.
hahaha. this reminds me of a time in about 1995, when the (canadian version of) The Discovery Channel had a live online chat on the internet, possibly with some scientist or something, but possibly just with the web-happy lady (mara/nara/mala something like that).. anyways, it was live on tv, and they were showing the real-time chat on the tv.. i was sitting at my computer at the time, so i joined the irc channel.. suddenly someone started posting a bunch of anti-micro$oft stuff, and they discontinued the live chat, "there is someone ruining it for everyone else here, by forcing their views on everyone in the channel" hehehe. they didn't even call it a flame or a flood or anything, didn't have a clue!:) Micro$oft Sucks! Micro$oft Sucks! Micro$oft Sucks! over and over.. heheheh.
"...some obscure person sitting in a basement can throw up on the Internet a brand new motion picture, and with the click of a button have it go with the speed of light to 6 billion people around the world, instantaneously. It's totally different, totally different." what i was going to say was: this guy is 78 years old. 78!! but the real kicker is that he doesn't know anything about computers, the internet or the digital economy. sure, he knows what it smells like in the cockpit of a fighter plane over italy in WWII, and what it sounded like when JFK got shot 6 cars ahead of him, but he should realize that CNN and MSNBC are not information enough to base his point of view on. i would say he should step away from the case, because he seems ignorant to the big picture.
Q: you know what the funniest thing about that is?
A:...me neither.
hehehe. i think i'm soooo funny.
but really, i did a 'furst' post, not a first post. and besides, I apologized. what about an amendment to andy warhol's "15 minutes" saying.. something like 'Every geek will, once in their life, be entitled to a first post and offtopic reply string,' or something along those lines? huh? what about it?
this story sounds like the introduction of a new (actually wouldn't be surprized if this is the basis of an actual) john grisham novel. can you imagine the horror that the accused must have gone through? poor 'bloke' will probably be able to sue pretty nicely, though. what's the basis of law in britain, more like canada than california i hope..? for the sake of Charles P. Taxpayer Jr. that is.
but realnetworks are a bunch of nasty bastards, too. remember, they got busted for breaching generally accepted privacy rules a few months back, by collecing customer information after the fact? if you don't remember, look it up. it was big. but don't ask me what to do about it, i'm not a streaming video kinda guy myself. too busy doing other things. like hackin and listening to mp3s. besides, i find that streaming video/audio is more-often-than-not a pain-in-the-rear, and/or choc-full of ad-verts. heh-heh-heh. and isn't that what our giant hard drives are supposed to be for? high speed internet connections are made for DOWNLOADING, not streaming. why stream once when you can hold on for ever?
the previous was my $0.02, but remember it's not worth as much because:
bill gates is great but now that the GNU is around, bill gates is old. he did what he had to do in our effed-up society, to get to the very top. i love the line, "people are not getting rich selling software" or whatever the exact syntax was.. it's just so funny that the richest man to ever walk the planet once said that people couldn't get rich doing what he got rich doing. the richest, in fact. he accomplished, humungously, what he once declared was impossible. imagine that! imagine that twenty years from now, i could be in court because my company is about to be disbanded because of my horrible business practices, and it's all based on me saying today "people just can't get rich from selling home videos", or something..! damn that's just too much! but i bet i'm one of the only/.'ers who has ever said 'bill gates is my hero' and meant it.. but not for the illegal/immoral stuff he did, or the crappy software he peddles, just for his big huge balls.
hah hah.
but really, i remember seeing a story about some router problems they were having, and that really made me wonder what it looks like. Rack-mounted xeons? raised floor? retinal scan? classified?
