  1. Re:Heres the Lowdown - I bought it too, but.. on Amiga Allies With Red Hat · · Score: 1
    I bought this SDK.

I've written a few command line applications.

The Java claim is for personal Java, not Java 1.2 as many may think. The current Amiga SDK is not Java 1.2 compliant, no AWT for one!

The binaries have there locations hard-coded into the binary. If you try and rename/move/copy the file, it will not work, period. It must me put in a specific spot.

The SDK is good at producing much smaller executables than Linux and you can run these apps anywhere there is a run-time environment for these binaries.

That's all it is, a way to manage your files on your Linux box. It does have modules coming that will allow a multitude of viewing options.

Yeah, it's icon view is way too slow, even on a PIII 533mhz (work box).
Plus, it needs to have an Icon made for all image type of files (jpg, png, etc) instead of the sheet of paper Icon! Ick! It's hard to see which files I had were images, I had to keep looking at the extensions.
They need to add a sort facility to sort by mime-type or file-type! I could sort all my images (gifs, jpgs, etc) seperate from my ascii files and compressed archives.

I am using the theme : Vector.
I like how it does show a snapshot of my scripts in the browser window.
The MP3 player module needs a 'volume' control.
    It's a start.

    Ever heard of place holders?

Most developed applications go for functionality first. They put place holders for where the artist(s) will come in later and make the appropriate changes.

All movies, games etc do this, it's part of development.

The interface should be intuitive, but doesn't have to be purty :) while in development.

Gee wiz Intel, I thought you'd had bigger mouse balls than Apple...guess not.

Is Intel saying their products are inferior? ;)

I own a Dual Intel boxen, but I don't toss a blanket over my friends Powerbook when he brings it when him.

Maybe this is the geek version of a security blanket?

  5. LAG = weight. on id Software Announces Development Of Doom III · · Score: 1
Talk about weight or slowing down, I've played a lot of shooters online (mainly StarSeige: Tribes). I think LAG is funny and sad.

LAG is funny when you see someone your about to frag and notice the person can't move or is stuck running in place. Easy frag.

LAG is sad when it's you that's getting fragged because of lag. (shazbot!)

Lag, everyone loves lag. What pisses you off when you cannot run? It's lag, lag, lag. What limits your packets and makes you yell "damn it!" It's lag, lag, lag.

  6. To write commercial and free software on What are Your Programming Goals? · · Score: 1
I am doing what I want, well sort of. I work a day job as a Systems Programmer/Unix Admin and write my own software on the side.

I use C/C++ (sometimes Java), GTK+, amoung other goodies in Linux and I also write BeOS software.

Many people keep asking me if my commercial ones in progress are going to be open sourced. Give me good reasons to go open source with commercial software, no threats please :). I am a "small" time developer, so keep that in mind.

I enjoy coding, I learn a lot on my own and share sections of my code with others, just not the whole enchilada. :)

It's not that I have top secret code, but I like learning on my own. Sure, some of my code probably can/should be done better, all things can be improved. In some cases, like M$, it's not always the case.

I am going to buy a copy. The $99.00 price tag sounds fine to me. It's cool to see developers make money from their hard work. If The Gimp cost money and was around the same amount I'd buy it. Heck, I buy RedHat or download it from time to time. I see no problem with buying software. If it costs too much, I don't buy it.
