Strange, i installed Windows Srv 2008 as a virtual machine on my pc(VmWare) and it works really good. I added Aero and all that s.it and still it's ok. Virtual machine has 1 GB ram and cpu is Athlon Xp 3200.
To be honset i can live with big memory consumtion, but i cannot agree on cpu usage.
Quick test - go to [mmorpg.com] site (widely known website), then check cpu usage (im sitting on win xp). I get almost constantly 50% usage by firefox.exe process
I have similar thougths as you. I tend to leave open browsers for days. I use 1.5.1, and leaving it for a night is a disaster, memory leaks + 90% cpu usage. I believe its beacuse this shit called flash , anyway IE7 doesnt have this problem (altough ms droped ball on this, its still shitty browser)
It should change its name to Cthulhu
"We Love Microsoft and Hate All Things Apple." maybe in soviet russia

Is Dvorak the guy who said win2k is horrbile cause it almost always takes 1005 of cpu. He thought about idle process back then.
