I don't think this is no longer true. Secret Service uses tons of Unix and Linux tools. They also require you be quite verse in multiple operating systems just to get an internship.
The mix tape is better promotion than anything a record company has ever done. In some cases, the mix tape brought back artists that the record industry themselves ruined. It's pretty obvious that they are doing this because they don't want an artist to succeed with out there direct control.
I imagine in the next few months after these rounds of lawsuits, we will see Industry mixtapes which will fail just like anything the industry does.
