Personally this is the first trek series I have been interested since TNG. I never cared much for DS9 or Voyager. And just because Bakula is known for Quantum Leap is no reason he can't do a good job. Hell, if anything it means he CAN do a good job. It's not the actors fault if the viewer can't let go of the past. As for the ship, well, the disc is a little to Next Generation, but it looks cool.
It's late in the game but here is my 2 cents. Katz didn't really weigh in one way or the other on global warming. It seems like his main point was that global warming will be a big techno-political issue, which seems like a no brainer since it has been for years now.
I am of the mind that we know jack-shite about how much impact we have on our environment and its a waste of time to endlessly debate these issues until more conclusive evidence is found. There are so many real CURRENT problems the world faces that should be addressed that it seems almost criminal for politicians and world leaders to even bother with it.
I'm not saying we shouldn't continue researching climate change, hell, spend more money on it. We need people and ships in orbit, colonies on the moon, people going to Mars to study its climate - real research yielding real scientific knowledge, not a bunch of rhetoric that accomplishes exactly NOTHING. The real problem with the global warming debate is that it shouldn't be a debate, there isn't enough knowledge to justify debate. It is just another hot button issue like abortion and confederate flags that serves no purpose other than to make our elected officials/world leaders look like they care and are really working hard to solve the problem when in fact all they are doing is avoiding the real work of solving the real problems that people face.
There is civil injustice all over this planet, third-world wars, poverty, government corruption, hunger, AIDS, ebola, breast cancer, colon cancer, snakes, poisonous spiders, you name it! But it is almost as if these fronts have been abandoned; deemed unsolvable by the powers that be. And now they are just trying to look busy.
Anyway, here are the links I mentioned. Both concern John Christy and atmospheric scientist and member of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
I don't know much about high finance, but I do know that one of reasons so many tech companies have faced is the easy availability of finance cash, without being prepared to handle the responsibility of having shareholders. In the current climate Google may attract some genuine investors who know a quality product when they see one, and trust the vision of the company. I have wondered why Google hasn't already IPO'ed, but it looks like they spent the required time developing their product and perfected their business plan; a rare thing these days. Google does have a product too, and it is the best on the market today. And I'm pretty sure there is no need to worry about Google losing control, you can be sure all the private financiers and the founders will retain a controlling interest after the IPO.
This is all a bunch of rhetoric. The only time the United States respects the laws and cultural traditions of a foreign land is when those laws and traditions pose no threat to U.S. economic interests. The same thing applies to so-called international agreements. We violate those all the time, sometimes even ones we initiated ourselves. I am a happy U.S. citizen that doesn't always agree with the Microsoft-like way the US bullies the rest of the world sometimes, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. You'd have to be blind to believe that the government would ever stunt our potential economic growth regardless of any agreement. What is it that makes the U.S. a global power? The fact that we consume 70% percent of the planets resources, thus making every country dependent on our money for their livelihood.
With millions of pages going up, changing, and going down every day how could we even hope to make an issue of this?
I mean, its like protesting somebody who wears the same shirt as you because they saw you wearing it and liked it. No one has become a loyal visitor of a site just because they thought the navigation was really great. Its the content that brings them back. I mean, is linux.com going to lose their regulars to this guy's site just because his layout is the same? If he was deliberately trying to trick people into his site by riping off the layout that would be an issue. I hate a bad design scheme as much as the next guy, but there are plenty of people out there who haven't a chance of becoming experts at design or html even, but they may have some worthy information to share. Are we to say, "Sorry, don't care about that. If you can't do it without ripping off someones html you can't do it at all."? As for as I'm concerned it's all about the info. If you have to use my design to do it, help yourself. I can always make more.
Not every article on Slashdot has to be some enlightening techno/social commentary does it? I mean, most of us agree AOL sucks worse than a pile of rancid chicken livers served up in a dirty 3rd world toilet bowl. And this kid is obviously not some type of guru (unless AOL Parental Control Workarounds is enough of a subcategory to qualify). But hey it was a bit reassuring if you ask me. I mean he was obviously weened on AOL but it looks as if he will be able to overcome his handicap. Thats gotta be worth something. If nothing else it was amusing.
This same article was linked to from an article about KaZaa a week or two ago.

I'm terrified beyond all capacity for rational thought.
