  1. Linux shortcomings on Ask About Running Windows Software in Linux · · Score: 3, Insightful

What, if any, are the shortcomings in the Linux API's that make implementing Windows API's more difficult then they should be, e.g., sound, graphics, filesystem, etc.? Are you seeing any efforts to address these shortcoming?

  2. AT&T Digital One Rate on What's The Best Cell Phone Calling Plan? · · Score: 1
I travel every week on business. The only cell phone plan that makes sense for this is the AT&T Digital One Rate plan. The phones work pretty much anywhere - they're digital and analog, long distance is free and there's no roaming charges.

There are multiple plans depending on your minute requirements but all of them cost more than $50. You can compare plans for different vendors at www.decide.com.

You'll find yourself using the phone much more than you originally thought - clients often don't have phones available for your use, you need to have private business conference calls, etc. Our people usually get the 1100 minute plan as a minimum. We have people who hit 3000 minutes on a regular basis.

You should expect your company to reimburse you for the entire cost of your business related calls and its normal in the industry for them to simply pay for the entire service without you having to highlight line items.

I wouldn't recommend Sprint for traveling simply due to their lack of coverage area. Regardless what their maps show there are numerous holes in their coverage - much more so than AT&T. I don't have experience with Powertel or Verizon though.

  3. It can work on Full-Time Telecommuting -- Does It Work? · · Score: 1

I know several people who work in different states then the company they work for.

They like and hate it. You may think you interact rarely with your co-workers but you'll find out exactly how much you did once you start this.

It's much more difficult to manage other developers telecommuting so your work becomes much more focused. Your input on the front-end of it drops off dramatically.

But... Your time becomes your own. Want to run errands or hit the beach? Go ahead. As long as the work gets done, nobody cares.

If your work is clearly focused on specific items that nobody else has input on, telecommuting full-time can work. But you lose the social aspect of work and any real sense of belonging.

  4. Disdain and contempt on Onward, Christian Geeks · · Score: 1

Disdain and contempt are ugly no matter how they're applied. I may not agree with the morality presented in a Christian game, but I respect what they're trying to do. I think Katz needs to look in a mirror at his own prejudices before providing us with an editorial. Would this editorial be so biting (or even be written) if this was a Muslim game or a Buddhist game? I don't attend Church anywhere. I can't really define what my faith is or isn't. But I don't spit on people who do have faith. To the contrary, I respect their choices. There seems to be a large segment of today's society that belongs to the invisible church of secular humanism. Their rules are unwritten but more binding than any in the Bible. Thou shalt not let faith pass uncriticized. Thou hast not the right to protect thy children. Thou shalt not put forth a viewpoint I disagree with. Katz, you're worse than any born-again I ever met.
