  1. Misleading! on Apple Fixes 'Misleading' Leopard Firewall Settings · · Score: 3, Informative

The article blurb is misleading - the "41 security fixes" released in the Mac OS X update was part of 10.4.11.

The three issues in the 10.5 firewall were the only security fixes for 10.5.

  2. Two important details on iTunes(UK) Targeted By The Office of Fair Trading · · Score: 1

Please stop going on about differences in VAT between European countries - Apple iTunes is based in Luxembourg, and charges the same VAT across Europe.

Also, iTunes has not been targeted by the Office of Fair Trading. The OFT has been asked to look at it by the CA (the Consumers' Association, publisher of Which magazine.)

  3. Re:Good. Now let's improve SPF. on IETF Decides On SPF / Sender-ID issue · · Score: 3, Informative

    Unfortunately, that's what's covered by Microsoft's patent.

    Really.

Microsoft want to patent going through a header to see who the message claims to have been sent by - the "Purported Responsible Address" - aka the PRA.

Take a look at the algorithm they are trying to patent and ask yourself how many times you've done this yourself when trying to figure out where mail came from.

It's like trying to patent an algorithm to find the author of a book: 1) look for a name on the cover 2) look for a name on the spine 3) look for a name in the copyright declaration 4) if you've found it, there you go! 5) if you haven't, too bad.

How can they expect to be taken seriously?

  4. Of course - the evidence is there to see... on Apple Secretly Maintaining x86 Port Of Mac OS X · · Score: 5, Interesting

Of course Apple have a x86 port of OS X. They want to keep their options open, and even if they don't move to x86 they will benefit by having an operating system that is already portable between architectures.

    As for the evidence - it you do a "strings /Applications /DVD Player.app /Contents /Frameworks /DVDPlayback.framework /Versions /A /DVDPlayback | less "
(i've added spaces before each "/" to keep slashdot happy - you need to take them out again!)

Now, search for "Debug", and look at the three next lines:

    DisablePIIISupport
    DisableATHLONSupport
    Disabl ePIVSupport

Now why would Apple's DVD Player have code concerning itself with PIII's, P4's and Athlons if they didn't have a version which ran on those chips???

Personally, I don't see Apple making the switch, but they've survived by surprising us time and time again...

  5. Who cares? on New Amiga Hardware Runs Mac OS · · Score: 2, Interesting

How much would one of these machines cost to put together and how does it compare to the current generation of Macs?

There's not many Macs still using the G3, but the G3 iMac is very cheap and doesn't require any hacks to get Mac OS and Mac OS X to run!

I think it's cool that this is happening - it's always been clear to me that with Darwin being open it will only be a matter of time before Mac OS X is running on non-Apple hardware - but I don't think Steve Jobs will be shaking in his boots just yet.

  6. File Extensions are OK on Ars Technica OS X 10.1 Review · · Score: 5, Insightful

John Siracusa has written some wonderful reviews on each of the versions of Mac OS X, from early betas, right up to 10.1, and I have enjoyed reading them.
But I must disagree with him on his views about file extensions. He is almost right when he says that applications "MUST" use file types, but I would relax that to "should". It's still stronger than Apple's "may", but more realistic.
He should realise that there are too many places where file types and creators are lost to rely on them. For example, a pure java application can't do file types, or when you are file sharing using windows (smb) or Unix (NFS) servers, you're going to lose if you need to have file types in there.
The fact is that the rest of the world doesn't support Apple's innovations, and they can't fight this uphill battle any more.
Give it up John. File types and creator codes are one of the defining aspects of the Macintosh experience, until you try to share your work with other people.

  7. Why ntl are doing this on Wireless Internet Finally Coming To London · · Score: 2, Insightful

The key to understanding this announcement is that ntl own all the transmitters up and down the country that are used to transmit all non-BBC television and radio.

If ntl can get this trial working in London, they should be able to roll other the service nationwide.

This would beat anything done on any cabled (both cable TV and phone lines) service, and be cheaper too.
