In theory, Communism is a great idea. In practice, what is often called Communism is actually a terrible idea.

  2. Senior Pranks at a High School on College Pranks Go Commercial · · Score: 1

One year, a group of Seniors stole the "Big Boy" from a local Big Boy Restruant. It was then placed on the dome roof of our gymnasium. One of my teachers was talking about how he had to call all the Big Boys in the area and ask them "Do you have a Big Boy out front? Can you check to make sure?"

Another senior prank involved our schools PA system. When the system was installed, there were multiple microphones placed around the building. Over time, all the mics except one were discontinued, and forgotten about. One senior managed to dig up the old plans for the system, and found the location of one of the forgotten mics. Later in that week, the school PA clicked on with what everyone thought would be a message from the principal. Instead, it was a tape. The senior had even taped the Principal starting a normal announcement "Please excuse this interuption, but we have a very important announcement" and then spliced that together with the audio track from a porno movie. It took a while for the administration to figure out where it was coming from, because nobody remembered the other microphones.

Personally, I have a few tricks that I could use for my senior prank. I'm not going to give details, but I will say that the librarians don't know enough about computers to stop me.

  3. Somebody may have said something similar but ... on Slashdot Meets The Pinkerton Corp. · · Score: 1

I am a student in a somewhat large (2200 students) high school. I am known as somewhat of a nerd, but I am not excluded because of it.

I play hockey in addition to writing C code and helping to administer our school's network. I am not a very flashey dresser, I don't even think I own anything with a Polo/Hilfiger/Gap/American Eagle/Abercrombie&Bitch label on it. Most of my wardrobe is Jeans and t-shirts.

I am not in any of the "in-groups" at my school, but I'm not excluded from them either. I can have a pleasant conversation with almost anyone in the school, whether they're jock, preppy, nerd, gangsta, goth, or other. I am not ostracized for being able to fix network problems, I'm not called names because I can write my own games for the TI-83 (our school provides calculators for us).

I read about what happened at Columbine, but I'm not scared to go to school. It's not that I don't think it CAN happen at my school, I think that my school is too diverse to let it happen. To illustrate my point, the other day at lunch, I was talking amongst a group of people that included a teacher, 2 jocks, a few gangsta-wannabes, a goth or two, a preppy, and myself. We weren't discussing the latest math test, we were talking about how we thought one of the (african-american) principals was racist (against whites, particularly white females). People from all walks of life were sitting and calmly discussing racism.

Yes, our administration has done some paranoid things, such as installing big yellow gates (that are never shut) across the driveway. They have started requiring all teachers to wear photo ID badges. These policies strike me as absurd, because at Columbine, along with other school shootings, the people who shot were students, not outsiders.

My school administration has also started responding to anonymous tips about "suspicious" behavior. I have a friend who was called out of class, patted down, had his car and his house searched (without a warrant) because somebody had anonymously told a counselor that he had a gun. After all the searching, all that was found was ... nothing. My friend was, needless to say, very angry. If Pinkerton's plan (as currently written) does manage to get implemented, more of the same will happen. I am totally against this plan.

You're correct. I misread the dates on my schedule.

Flying into Providence and/or trying to find a hotel in Providence may be a bad idea. The NCAA Ice Hockey final 4 is in Providence, is sold out, and is probably occupying a goodly number of hotel rooms in Providence.

Yes, a geek who actually knows about sports. Kinda amazing, isn't it?

It's a matter of personal choice. Personally, I use a TI-83 because my HS gave it to me and right now I don't have enough money to get something better (trying to save money to get a 21 in flatscreen and/or a car)

A useful feature of any graphing calculator is it's ability to store games. If it weren't for ZRace/Blackjack/Bowling, I would've fallen asleep many times in my Stats class.

The ADC list is very confusing. I'm still trying to figure out why mail for 701 gets banded with stuff for 353-357, and sent to ADC (NAME HERE) 348
