  1. Agree: tax avoidance is your right on Washington State Encourages Internet Sales Tax · · Score: 1

Tax evasion is illegal - it is the crime of trying to avoid taxes by illegal means. Tax avoidance is what you're talking about, and is what every citizen should be doing. The government does not deserve more money than is required by law: why give them more? See the wikipedia article on tax evasion and avoidance for more information.

You're right, they don't. But, if you have software installed/running that wants to display time in a user's local time zone, e.g. a web site with users that are using the time zone "Eastern Time (US & Canada)," you will want to upgrade the timezone information so it can display it using the corrected Daylight Saving Time rules. This is equally true if Azerbaijan were to change theirs, but it would affect a much smaller number of people.

  3. My Recommendation for Today on Debian Package of the Day · · Score: 2, Informative

My recommendation for today is tzdata - I upgraded/installed this on several servers today to address the DST issue. Apparently it used to be part of the libc package in sarge, so you might look at updating that instead if you're a die-hard sarge user.

  4. Defective by Design == DRM on Month of PHP Bugs Has Begun · · Score: 1

"Defective by Design" usually refers to DRM, since that is what the FSF's campaign against DRM is called.

Wow, my alma mater is actually on slashdot, doing something possibly useful. It is unfortunate, though, that while the school has been pushing big on research its undergraduate studies are still not improving (I still interact with undergraduatesfrom the school daily).

  6. Re:Not about sales tax! on IRS May Ask eBay To Snitch On Sellers · · Score: 1

Yes, that is correct, that is why the limits are imposed. This is clearly targeted at "eBay businesses," not individuals trying to sell their 2 year old laptop.

However, you can't claim the depreciated value as a loss. Buying things are not investment - this is even true of things like doing stamp or coin collections because collecting is considered a hobby, not an investment.
