  1. Linkssys and SBC/Yahoo DSL on SBC/Yahoo DSL, Hubs, and Mac OS X? · · Score: 1

My brother-in-law has SBC DSL through Nevada Bell and I helped him set it up with a Linsys router. He now has two (one Wi-Fi) and seldom does he have problems. All the system wants is a PPPoE compatible system and off you go.

This is also a great way to share your DSL with the rest of your internal network.

Another option (but not really cheaper) is to insert an ethernet card into a PCI slot and log on using one ethernet port and the other for your internal network. Why spend the money on this option, when you can share your connection and get a hardware firewall with the router?

  2. Dreamworks=Spielberg+GATES+????+whocares on DreamWorks Switches to Linux · · Score: 1

Does no one else remember that Bill owns a large part of Dreamworks? Another case of talking out the side of his mouth. If his product is so great, why isn't a company he personally has stake in using his products to work with? Cost of maintenance maybe? Using Linux they can upgrade every two years instead of five. Using Windows they MUST upgrade every two years instead of five.

  3. Depends on Game on Video Games Not Protected Form of Speech · · Score: 1

The judge says he reviewed four games (what a HUGE sample) and found them to be closer to board games not movies/stories, therefore justifying his judgement. I think he has a point with some games, but what about games like Myst, any RPG, even to some degree some of the First Person Shooters have a plot. As a parent, I would like to know what my children are doing, playing, and watching, but that is my responsibility, not societies as a whole.

What happened to taking responsibility for ourselves. Sometimes it seems that we are expecting more and more for our institutions to take care of us.

  4. Working from home on Can Technology Make The Money For You? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have often thought about working from home, and could probably justify doing so with my work (Electronic Records Management) but I have two little problems - a 2.5 yr old daughter and a 10 months old son. I love them both incredibly and spend a lot of time with them outside of work, but I see how little my wife sometimes can get done if the kids are demanding a lot of attention. In addition, I still think that getting out and working outside of the house is a nice break from the family and allows me to appreciate them even more.

  5. Re:architecture on Apple Announces Darwin 1.0 · · Score: 1
I guess there are two answers to this question.

Rumors have it that the portion of OS X that used to be, or still is based on NExT's OpenStep, was, is and may continue to be upgraded to be cross platform. This should mean that anyone coding in "Cocoa"/OpenStep should compile to any supported hardware, maybe even the Solaris.

Reality states that the portion of OS X that is Mac OS 9 compatible and even the "Carbon" portion will not be cross platform compatible.

What does this mean? Look for newly written software to be able to run on next to any hardware, kinda like well coded Linux apps, but anything out there now won't crossover.

Just my understanding of what I've read on http://MacOsRumors.com
