  1. Re:Internet in Alaska on Sarah Palin's Stance On Technology Issues · · Score: 1

So fixated on the small details that you miss the big picture. So what if it didn't finally sell on Ebay. From what I understand, the listing generated one serious solicitation but the deal fell through over some of the finer details and the inquirer found a jet from another source. Was it below the initial purchase price? Yes. Does that really matter in the long term? No. The real important thing to look at isn't the capital gain or loss, but rather the decision's return on investment (ROI).

Did the private Jet include a pilot? It probably did, amounting to a cost of $100-200k/yr once you add up everything in the benefits package. How about Hanger Charges? $3-4k/month would sound about right depending on the sqft required. Maintenance contract? I have no idea what it was but a 5% rule of thumb for complex machinery wouldn't be surprising. That's $100k more per year. All this without the plane ever leaving the ground.

Someone on her staff ran the numbers and the cost of maintaining the plane versus the benefit it afforded just didn't add up. The capital loss from selling the plane easily made back before the end of your 4 year tenure. It was great decision for the Alaskan tax payer.

You may be using it for email now, but who's to say whether you or any of your relations will develop some sort of product in the future that can be marketed via your .com address. It is, after all, your own name so you have sufficient right to hold the address without anyone accusing you of cyber squatting.

Similarly, there's a chance that the company will grow much larger in the future and their buy out offer will increase. Consider it an investment.

Simply add a redirect link at the top of the page. "Perhaps you were looking for company X? They can be found at [their URL]."

With an attitude like that, I'm surprised that you're even on the internet. Your opinion could just as easily be written on pen and paper and exchanged over drinks at the local pub, but your ability to reach a large audience would be severely limited. Instead, you grace the rest of the world with your presence on Slashdot so that we can revel in your wisdom. Personal remarks aside. This is the entire gist of what makes systems like TIGR so effective and are the best areas to spend tax dollars. Improvements to communication and data tracking serve as the premier method of force multiplication.

In earlier era's, soldiers used runners, horse bound messengers, smoke signals, or carrier pigeons to coordinate unit action. The advent of technologies such as the telegraph and radio allowed over the horizon communication. With networked computer systems, we can not only converse in real time, but historical trends are now available within seconds. I really hope they can make this work.

So what are the costs on the development of TIGR so far? $10M? $20M? That's peanuts compared to the cost associated with attending to injured or killed serviceman, let alone the equipment and hardware that may be destroyed with an IED.
