  14. Peanuts and Cotton on "Terminator Technology" · · Score: 1

It isn't so much the suns energy that is stored in the ground as Nitrogen (a key ingredient to the base energy compounds used in plants) and other nutrients. Plants use sunlight directly.

I don't think it was that quickly that the Indians were proven right. If they looked at White Man in derision I would guess it was more out of lack of variety, and how ugly it was.

It wasn't until the south found such cash crops as cotton and tobacco (both of which thouraghly deplete the soil of Nitrogen and other neccisary nutrients) that this became a known problem. George Washington Carver was one of the people that discovered that Peanuts especially did well in restoring the nutrients removed by cotton and tobacco. He also did a lot of work in making peanuts into a cash crop (Peanut Butter, etc.)

Also after the mighty dust bowl of the depression they learned more methods of rejuvinating the soil, and controling erosion of top soil by planting rows across, not up and down grades.

But early farmers of central america used rows and such. They had cities big enough to warrant that kind of production. The Indians as the white men discovered them on the east coast didn't have that centralized a population base.

I know there have been two other `On Paper' articles dealing or mentioning Gtk in non Linux publications. One explanation of the mindset might be a misinterpretation of the name. Some have called it the *Gnu* Tool kit, owing to the trememdous success of the libraries and development tools like gcc and glibc.

    1) The C/C++ thing. This is a style difference of people who are action oriented and object oriented. People who like to optimize speed and people who optimize code.

    2) Flamboyance/Unobtrusive. People will always want to shock others with how in depth there screen looks. And some don't want to be annoyed by it.

    3) Even though some see more mainstream support for KDE, there is much more mainstream support for the GTK than QT. Some main applications (Mozilla for instance) have already switched or are making plans to switch from Motif. I saw an article last year comparing all the major graphical tool kits (TCL/TK, Motif, Open Look) and suprise GTK was even there before it reached 1.0. I can't remember if QT was in it too, but if it was it didn't get near as much attention. I've seen plenty of articles since.

To sum up, there are inherent style differences that I think will keep both alive. And if there is going to be a clear winner it is way to early to tell.

Hmmm, the only parts of the Return of the Jedi I didn't like was a few "stars need more roles" kind of contravnces. Lando and Han are all of a sudden Generals and leading the main missions. I felt that cheapens the Rebellion and makes it seem as though only five people have all the talent.

The plot as you describe it is (BiON) pretty much what I'm suspecting. It just seems to me that the downfall of the Jedi's should really be themselves. They are getting lazy, proud, and lonely at the top so they start fighting amongst themselves. The forget the ways that lead them to the status they were. (Anger moves people to the Dark Side references and all.) Darth is just the single embodiment of the fall.

But as it is I foresee a "Young Indiana Jones" style of storylines that wind up with an old man sitting in a rocking chair saying "And /that/ was how the light bulb was invented." Too much charectar contravance.
