If you want to be a leader, as opposed to being a 'manager', then you should:
1) Know what is going on. If one of your people is annoying everyone in the entire company, it shouldn't be a surprise. Another is a slacker? You should know that. Another a SuperStar? You'd better know that for sure, or he/she will soon be gone.
2) Back up the people that deserve to be backed up. There are a lot of corp-uscles who will try to order around your people, slag them, knife them in the back, etc. If you don't back up your people, you are truly useless, and deserve every bad thing that happens to you.
3) READ Peter Drucker! The single greatest human asset this country has on the process of management. One of his many books is worth a shelf of 'One Minute Manager' schwa.
I have dealt with no more customer-unfriendly and duplicitous companies than Ebay and PayPal. They deserve each other. I'm on AT&T's side, SCO's side, MicroSquish's side, Satan's side, etc, as long as they are pissing off EbayPal.
Before I took my first hang gliding lesson in the late 70's I went down to the beach and watched seagulls soar along the cliffs for several hours.
When I went to my first lesson, the instructor asked the group if anyone had prepared for it. I told them what I had done. The other students laughed out loud. The instructor gave me his best 'you are the only chucklehead here who even has a clue' look.
The 3rd of the 4 Matt Helm spy movies, starring Dean Martin, featured guys in a Mexican brewery loading kegs into a cooler with primitive Aliens style exoskeletons. Just saw it on AMC or TCM last night, I think the movie is 'The Enforcers'.
was to license Harris, AMD, Chips and Technologies, IBM, etc., to manufacture the 286 and 386 chips. Would any of these companies be seriously competing with Intel today if that deal hadn't been signed?
And you could take a look at the blatant ripoff of DEC's Alpha architecture. When sued, Intel just bought them out. Brilliantly sleazy.

Hope this helps
"I get at least 30 albums a month or so at 10 bucks a month. That's 10 cents each." Nice math, bucko.

Ok, never mind, I'll email Roger Ebert.
