Ahh, good to know that there's somebody else here:) .
While I understand the whole cellphone-revolution thingy, I just don't need all that crap that's currently being merged into cells. Why would I need a camera, an mp3 player, worse, the Internet on my phone? I'm not a multimedia borg (yet), I can do most of this stuff comfortably at home, preferably on my PC. I'm not a conservatist, mind you (well, i AM reading slashdot, after all:) ), but some of the new, popular stuff just doesn't appeal to me. And yes, I do understand that this changes me into some sort of a basement-dweller who sees sunlight for 2 hours a day max, but, frankly, i don't give a damn. But while I'm neutral towards most cellphone-people, those who ultimately piss me off to no end are those, who play crappy songs on even crappier cellphone speakers so loud, that all you hear is some goddamn distorted white noise. And noooo, it doesn't stop there, they're bobbing and shaking about, waving hands, singing lyrics to the top of their voices, annoying the hell out of passing-by people....
*You have scored 10 out of 10 on the Asperger's Syndrome test.*
I actually know b3ta and am signed to it's newsletter (bought the sick-jokes book too:) ) . Although they too appear on different media, the difference is magnitude, i think. 2channel's BBS, for what i know (might be outdated info), generates more traffic than even slashdot - and consider this, it's a Japanese-only board:) . This is why I think 2chan is more than a subculture. The other difference is that b3ta is a more art-oriented board than 2chan, often relating to current events, especially in the UK, which newspapers find attractive to slap on magazines. But that's just my theory;) .
Well, ain't it obvious? It's not like the Internet is some sort of global village or something...
Oh, wait...
Alas, if you think you saw emoticons, just google for Shift_JIS art, especially of the 2chan kind (there's some on en.wiki, but it's mostly the copy-pasted stuff). For what I know, that BBS is, and i quote, "f*****g huge". It's more than a subculture, but less than a culture of it's own. If i recall correctly, they've even written a book and have their Shift_JIS creatures roaming some japanese TV programs.
Good progress, but lots of work still needed.

Linux as A Musician's OS?
·
· Score: 2, Informative
As a musician myself (no kidding! I actually made music for some obscure PC and cellphone games, what i consider "extremely lucky";) ) , I am actually surprised by the progress most of these projects have achieved. I remember the times when not even making, but GETTING sound on Linux was troublesome - and that was, what, about five or more years ago? Now I see not only sound support has gotten good enough to actually be idiot-proof (myself-proof too actually;) ), but the software evolved from a bunch of unusable dependancy-hell ridden projects to quality studio equivalents. Even my favored tracking type of software is developing nicely, although i always have some buts and mehs that keep me from using them and in the end i end up using the old ones with DOSBox instead.
All in all, there still aren't "good enough" alternatives to make me revert from my windows-based software (FL Studio, Adobe Audition, Reason... and Impulse Tracker, just for the hell of it;) ) in full, but i do see some interesting concepts that may make me shift my workflow to a double-boot system. And, keep in mind, as an amateur (or semi-pro;) ) musician, my needs are quite low, considering, so it's a tough road ahead to get to the true professionals.
Ok, so even if it gets adopted on some of the bigger sites, people will just run away from them to some other, more free alternatives. Great job, ad-guys, you've just lost your big user-base. People who push stuff like this have, and i quote, "no fucking clue". First they should pull their heads out of their asses, then try to think of a way of either making old media more attractive to the general consumer, or harnessing the internet's potential in some other, non-invasive way. Although for me, they should just wither off and die.
(Sorry for angry tone, I'm just tired of things like this.)
That is, of course, true, but that console-dying-developers-moving thing was just a hypothesis:) . Also, while it does require significantly more effort to pirate games on consoles, it's not impossible of course, so it IS possible we'll actually see a reverse tendency - console developers running away to the PC market. But, to be honest, i just don't see it happening in the next 10 years.
Even IF Nintendo would be losing any money and all this doomsaying actually came true, there is still our beloved PC platform. If consoles turn out not to be profitable anymore (which i seriously doubt), in my opinion the developers won't just sit there like lemons but will jump ship and go back to the oldest harbor that kept them safe for all these years.
Ahh, the sole reason I was learning english at the age of 8, perhaps 9, I don't remember it quite well. My best gaming memories revolve around this game, the perfect mix of gameplay, graphics, sound (the intro music is literally burnt into my mind) and plot, and, considering not only games, but also computer hardware was quite hard to get where I live at that time, I'd say I'm quite lucky to know it. I even have my old notebook, where I wrote down all the mantras and runespells I've discovered. It's the little memories like this that make me happy... Which reminds me, I've got to play it again some time:) .
TREACHERY AND DOOM! MY BROTHER WOULD UNLEASH A GREAT EVIL... BRITTANIA IS IN PERIL!
Seeing as my brain is completely bleached by stuff like goatse, lemonparty or 4chan/b/, I'd say they better be off not knowing.
In my opinion, we (internet users) just exaggerate how powerful the internet is. Don't get me wrong, the web IS great, but you actually CAN live without it. Or at least other people.
It's pretty simple. People always blame others first, and since the IT department is the closest thing to a scapegoat in the office... Well, you just need more red staplers i think.
Also, if you're a computer-illiterate person, you get quite used to call the IT dept. as often as you can with problems which seem "strange" to you, so very soon it just goes as your natural reflex. In my opinion though, it has nothing to do with mentality, just the lack of computer experience. For example: "OH NOES, my mail client can't connect to the mailserver! Plz help me, IT Department!:(" (which, by coincidence, is one of the first things new workers call for).
This is actually quite interesting. Wikipedia (and Google) says that the Star Diaries were first published in 1971, but the theory seems like it might be a little older. Although Lem didn't write this as a scientific paper, in my opinion he must have had some experience in this field and/or some documentation to base off of. Anyone in the science community willing to inform an ignorant like me?
That, or he's just a really smart guy (which he, of course, is).

So i guess i'm pretty much alone on the whole i-hate-those-newfangled-cellphones-i-only-want-som ething-that-can-call-and-receive-calls front.
Oh well, live and learn.

It is a grim future, with lots of explosions and partial nudity.
