  1. See also this most on the MSRC blog on MS Gives 60-Day Deadline to Web Devs · · Score: 1

There's an update on the MS Security Response Center blog:

  2. URU == ID card on British Telecom Pushes Universal ID Check System · · Score: 3, Interesting

AFAIK, Britain has no mandatory ID card. This sounds weird to a lot of European people, since most European countries require every citizen to have a government-issued personal identity card which identifies them uniquely (a passport is generally accepted as an alternative). Maybe Britain is just thinking about skipping the physical step completely and going directly to the electronic ID stage. This would certainly make sense, since they are probably going to decide to create a mandatory ID anyway.

  3. Gaming on The t68i Replacement is Here · · Score: 1

The T610 also supports both Java and Mophun for mobile games. Mophun was introduced on the T300, and it looks like SonyEricsson is going to stick to it. It looks much leaner & lighter than Java, but it's proprietary. For those interested, you can get a free SDK from Mophun. However, you apparently have to go through Mophun to distribute your games.

  4. OGSA for gamers on More on Grid Computing and Gaming · · Score: 2, Insightful

The OGSA stuff is not necessarily about distributed computing, although the emphasis is certainly placed on this aspect in their docs.

The basic service a Grid infrastructure can provide to gamers is "peer groups": you can discover groups of people willing to share a game online, and join their group, and chat and play with them, without having to log on to a central server.

You could then imaging sharing add-ons and various other files with your peer group, again without using any central server.

The next step would of course be sharing the actual CPU time of all the devices, for example to keep your characters "alive" even when your console is switched off. And then you'll receive an SMS whenever he gets attacked :-)

  5. This is the new battlefield on IBM Picks Qtopia Over PalmOS And PocketPC · · Score: 3, Informative

Yeah, well, is IBM really going to be able to compete with Symbian and Microsoft? Sure, it's nice to see a dinosaur company like IBM making bold moves, but they're just one step behind the other guys. I would say IBM is an outsider in the new battle for the "pervasive OS". Today, the big contenders are Nokia/Sony Ericsson + Symbian and (as usual) Microsoft. Sure the Zaurus is nice, but check out the 3GSM news and all you will see is Symbian and M$.

  6. Just out of place on Harry Potter Wins Hugo · · Score: 1

Sure, the Harry Potters books are nice, fun, inventive, in a distinctly British kind of way, definitely gravitating somewhere in the Tolkien galaxy. Yes, I could imagine Harry reading The Hobbit. But does Harry relate to the worlds of Neuromancer or Hyperion? I'm not saying Harry Potter does not deserve the Hugo, I'm merely pointing out that he's definitely a bit out of place among the likes of Ender, Case, or David Brin's monk... Er, apes.
