Apple SHOULD be a Linux fans' worst nightmare... Charging extrememly high prices for a product while sitting on the backs of OSS developers and all. But, you forgot: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"

Microsoft is the big enemy, while Apple is small potatoes. Anything that hurts Microsoft is ok, until of course Apple gets a large market share (which would have happened in the 80's if it was every going to - translation: never going to happen ever ever ever)

  2. Re:PC vs Mac. on Puncturing the "PCs Are Cheaper Than Macs" Myth · · Score: 0

Because Apple is the one that calls their PC's "Mac's" and PC's not made my Apple "PC's". Apple users always buy into apple advertising and buzzwards without question, as owning an Apple is more of a religious choice than a practical one these days. Most Mac users (other than the fine folks that surf slashdot of course) don't even realize how similar Mac's and PC's are these days. Just some BIOS differences, styling, OS, and a 20% price increase.

Mac Mini starts at $599, with only 512MB of memory and a 60GB HDD and costs an extra $250 to upgrade to a 160GB drive. Dell Dimensions start at $359 with 512MB and already have the 160GB drive. $349 or $849 for a comparible machine... Uhhh.... Apple simply IS NOT COMPETING in the low end. Who can even use a Mac Mini with a freaking 60GB drive anyway? Do they think we are that stupid?

The Mac Mini is a mid level priced machine pretending to be low level, by depending on their gullible user base to not see what they are doing. I suppose Mac users are used to getting ripped off, either because of stupidity or you figure it out. It is a miracle that Apple has a box for under $1,000 anyways.

  5. Re:Nah. Windows sucks as a desktop. on After Ubuntu, Windows Looks Increasingly Bad · · Score: 0

"On windows, you deal with menus and applications then you have to go search for your documents and folders."

You obviously don't use Windows much, or are new to Windows, because this is simply not true. Only the most computer illiterate find files with the File menu within applications. Anyone with any skills what-so-ever will either double click the file directly to launch it's associated application, or will launch the application and then drag the file directly to it instead of using the File menu. Are you still using Windows 3.1 or something?

"Ubuntu gets it more right than Windows. The applications themselves are less important, partly because they're mostly free, they get out of the way. Then you have the folders right there on the desktop so you can access the documents themselves directly."

I do agree that applications in general on Windows are more self important than in Linux, but this is due to software companies needing to retain customers not some fundamental difference in the design of Linux compared to Windows. When Linux approches Windows's market share you will also see this in Linux when companies begin releasing software for profit in mass numbers. So if you like how Linux differs from Windows in this way, you better be hoping Linux keeps its 1% market share.

To say that somehow Ubuntu gives you direct access to your files on the desktop does not make any sense. By default in Ubuntu there are no icons on the desktop at all. On either platform you can just as easily save your documents directly to the desktop, except with Windows you actually do have a "my documents" folder directly on your desktop or just under the start menu, which makes finding your documents using that folder fairly easy (I rarely use it, but most newb's only save documents there). Seeing that Windows puts a folder on your desktop that directly accesses the default save location of most files, and Ubuntu puts no files and folders on the desktop at all, I don't see your point.

  6. This article is rediculous propaganda on 26 Common Climate Myths Debunked · · Score: 0

There are so many holes in this article I can't believe anyone would take it seriously.

    1) They explain away global warming that is happening on mars and pluto as no biggie because we are not seeing it on the other planets. HELLO!!!!! Mercury and Venus are so close to the sun that they are already frying (so hot that water cannot even exist), making them poor comparisons to Earth. All the other planets not mentioned are gas giants without a solid core, which makes for some very drastic changes on how they trap solar radiation (also not good comparisons to Earth). So the only other planets we can compare Earth to are Mars and Pluto (yes I know pluto is no longer a planet, but it is still the same rock it was when we called it one), with Mars being the overall best comparison we have since it is the most similar to Earth.... Which again are experiencing global warming "coincidentally" when Earth is as well.

    2) They talk a lot about ice cores and how data from those is less accurate the further you go back. Ya, of course the data is less accurate the further you go back. Our planet is billions of years old, but over 80% of its history there were NO ICE CAPS ON THE POLES! Earth's natural state is much hotter than now, and the fact that Earth has only had year round ice caps for less than 20% of its history is rock solid proof. Only during an Ice age are there year round ice caps on the poles (yes we are in an ice age interglacial period right now.... And never in the history of the planet has Earth's temperature stabilized for very long in an ice age interglacial period, although it has been known to stabilize at much hotter temperatures). The data does not go far back because Ice on the poles is a fairly new thing for the earth. The current Ice age started 40 million years ago, which means that Ice core data can only go back that far. Not very far when you look at how old the Earth really is.

All you fools can go and believe the latest environmental hysteria if you want. There is no stopping global warming in the long run... The earth will eventually return to its normal temperature. The ice caps will melt, and we will have millions of years of sunny days. You only need to look at the history of Earth's climate to see that. There are relatively few scientists pushing this, although anyone who "really" took a good look would agree, because there are no grants for scientists who come to that conclusion. Would you say global warming was caused naturally if you lost your job? I doubt it. You would say global warming is man made... And keep those tax payer funded checks coming, cause I have mouths to feed.

    >>Because they're stripping out things like Wine. Yes, yes, I know the arguments about compatibility layers...

Uhhh, why do I keep reading idiotic posts like this one all over slashdot? They arn't "stripping out things like Wine" they just aren't pre-installing Wine or VMWare or anything like that. Which, if you have ever installed Ubuntu desktop before, is EXACTLY like how everyone else gets it. So, basically Dell is just saying they are installing Ubuntu, with respect to Wine and VMWare, the same as everyone else gets Ubuntu.

What is the big deal? Did you expect Dell to start installing optional software that Canonical already has decided should not be installed by default? Where is the sense in that? And yes I do use Wine and VMWare very regularly and love them both, but all it takes is using these packages once before it is obvious to any non-moron why a first time computer using grandma who just learned how to use a touch-tone phone should not be trying to use Wine or VMWare.... They are the opposite of user friendly.

And if grandma thinks she is savvy enough to use Wine she should be able to figure out "sudo apt-get install wine" as well. If she can't figure out how to install Wine, then Wine is definitely outside skill skill set.

I agree fully. I have a 2007 Prius, and with my normal driving habits (75mph highway, and lots of stop and go in city) I average 48mpg overall. When I have tried my best to get good gas mileage, meaning I try to keep the car in electric mode as often as possible and drive the speed limit or less, basically how your grandma drives, I average 55mpg overall with a 50-50% mix of highway and city driving. I don't really see where the EPA was that far off, just a normal person (other than grandma) doesn't drive a car optimally for gas mileage.

  9. You people are all a bunch of childish FOOLS! on ICANN Wants Immunity · · Score: 0, Troll

All you people who are hoping that the US will loose control of the Internet are complete fools. The relative freedom you have on the Internet is because of US control, not in spite of it. Here are just a few reasons why you people are total idiots. 1) Most countries of the world are not concerned with Internet freedom, only Internet censorship. China anyone? If the US were to loose control you will at some point see censorship built into the infrastructure of the Internet as a whole, succumbing to the overwhelming pressure of nearly all of the world's governments. I mean give me a break, even freedom loving France shuts down websites that show a swastika even for historical purposes. Fortunately for all you Internet freedom lovers out there the US pioneered freedom of speech, and is big enough to be immune from the bullying, censor loving governments that make up most of the world. 2) There has been a lot of pressure to put a tax on the Internet from many countries and especially from the UN. Freedom on the Internet doesn't just mean free speech, it also means freedom from taxation. If control of the Internet goes international, I guarantee that the UN will finally get its way and tax all of you idiots. And where will the money go? To support the Internet's infrastructure? I seriously doubt it. To support the inevitable out of control bureaucracy that would be created? Maybe... More likely the money will go to the governments that represent the "less fortunate" and a small portion will go to give Internet to those who don't have it while the rest gets put where ever the dictators want it. Seeing as much of the money that the UN gives out goes into the pockets of corrupt foreign leaders, I doubt much good will come out of your monthly check you will fork out... "Oil for Food" anyone? Fortunately for us the US is in control for now, and has put a ban on Internet taxation. 3) US tax payers paid for the Internet. US government agencies and US tax payer funded Universities paid for the development of the Internet. Fortunately, the US decided to be nice and let the rest of the world connect to their network, instead of making the rest of the world actually develop their own network, which would have been cost prohibitive for most of the world without Americans giving it away for free, and the Internet would be nowhere the size it is today. When it comes down to it though, the rest of the world is still sitting on the backs of a primarily US government developed TCP/IP protocol and a US government and US university created network. Every time you connect to another computer via TCP/IP you should thank the government and people of the United States for developing it for you and giving it to you for FREE. You people are all a bunch of cry babies.... The freaking US develops a national and then global network for you people for free, gives you the software to connect to the network for free, and then "Ohh wahhhh, I think the US government has too much control of the Internet! They are squashing my freedom!" What a bunch of ungrateful pieces of.... My 2 cents
