  1. Re:Technology destroying sound quality ? on Hardware Review: Rio Receiver · · Score: 1

    i'm all for sound quality, but i think you're remiss in saying that you're worried about mp3 becoming dominant...don't you think it already has?

    unless, of course, you meant dominant in the 'excellent audio equipment' marketplace...which i don't think it has a chance of, as you stated.

  2. What's all this about the electoral college? on And The Winner Is... Nobody! · · Score: 1

    according to Grolier encyclopedia:

    The electors, popularly elected on election day, meet in their respective state capitals on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December in presidential election years. They vote by BALLOT separately for president and vice president. To discourage having a president and vice president from the same state, at least one of the candidates for whom they vote must not be a resident of the electors' own state. Certified lists of votes cast for the two offices are transmitted to the president of the U. S. Senate--since 1950 through the General Services Administration. On the following January 6 the president of the Senate, presiding at a joint session of CONGRESS, opens the certificates, and the votes are counted by tellers. The election is decided by a majority of the total electoral college vote.

    doesn't this mean that, with the vote being this close and all, that we will have to wait until the electoral college actually meets (according to this - 01/06/01) and votes before we can be really sure which of half of the same man will be the future king of the usa?

    and to top it off, no independent party (according to indymedia.org) received 5% of the vote - meaning they will not get federal funding. also meaning that this outdated, misrepresenting bi-partisan government system ain't goin' nowhere. damn the general public.

  4. Re:Does Manga == Anime? on NDK2K: Colorado's Anime Convention · · Score: 1

    to put it roughly, manga is the term for comics in japanese. all manga is printed. anime is short for animation, and thus only refers to animated material.

    the two are incorrectly interchanged due to their inherently close relationship; when osamu tezuka (father of anime) created astroboy he began what is known as the field of anime - but he was an established manga artist when he did so.

    go here for a great introduction to anime.

  5. 2 General misconceptions about anime. on Princess Mononoke Delayed.. To Add Japanese! · · Score: 2

    Ok. I wanted to attempt to address some misconceptions I've seen repeatedly among the (more inane, IMO) replies regarding the recent anime posts here on /.

    1. Animation & Comics are for kids.

    If you believe this, I am trying extremely hard not to think evil thoughts about you right now. I thought people here were supposed to have open minds - but maybe I was being too idealistic. Anyway, I may be able to understand that here in the States, we've been accustomed to cartoons as being a forum for (mostly) children. I cannot understand why bright people can't think outside those lines. The Japanese have a very rich visual tradition, and Comics (Manga) and Animation (Anime) are deeply embedded in their culture. Everyone reads and watches them.

    So unless you enjoy making fun of what's different than you (it's called bigotry, friend), think some more before you start advertising your ignorance.

    2. Anime mouths are synced to the dialogue.

    Most anime is done under a tight budget, and it would require massive amounts of man-power and time to make sure all the character's mouths work with the spoken dialogue - that coupled with the fact that most anime production houses know (or hope) that their product will be translated into other languages basically explains why anime mouths are not synced to dialogue. Most definitely not as "important" as the first one, but just a little annoying thing that I see crops up in replies from time to time. =)

    Amazing, amazing anime! The DVD transfer is almost flawless, and the show even makes sense! To top it off, it's about bounty hunters in space! I'm going to order mine today. And speaking of anime that's just been released, the Rurouni Kenshin DVD's are out too!
