Tenchi on Cartoon Network
sew2902 writes "If you didn't know, the aforementioned Tenchi Muyou series is going to be on the Cartoon Network. Theres an article over at Media Junkies that talks about it, including the fact that it will be censored." Tenchi is among my favorite anime series, but they'll definitely have to edit it for TV since there is the occasional nude scene. The article itself talks about Cartoon Networks increased anime content. I've been hoping they'd create a Toonami channel to counterpart their Boomerang channel: I figure somewhat censored anime is better then none at all. Oh, and the next episode of Cowboy Bebop is now out: my copy should arrive today or tomorrow: I'm stoked about this one.
Especialy that cute little Rio-oh-ki but what is done to these anime on Cartoon Network is a shame, DBZ has become a Joke because of over censorship, The Netork never lets the viewers know that Sailor Moons new friends are actualy lesbians and now Tenchi will be censored. I agree that Censored anime is better than no anime and wish that if CN did make an anime network they wouldn't try to market it only to kids, that way they could show more uncut shows.
At least with Gundam W they did it right.

I noticed that, once in awhile you where able to catch some chessy anime on the sci fi channel at about 4 in the morning on tuesday nights, and for a long time that was about all there was. Everytime I fliped to cartoon network in the last month, I have gotten loads of sweet juicy anime! Mmmmmm

Hentai TV? It probably exists in Japan... Nice point about the nudity vs. violence thing. Where is the Grammer Nazi when you need him?
I always figured it was better than being some obsessive stat-memorizing never-missing-a-game sports freak.

Dare I say, "no duh!"? That's why I excluded it from the list of anime that are un-bitchworthy.
I'm not a SM fan, but I do enjoy DBZ, and it's pretty shameful that people are *still* bitching and starting petitions to FUNimation about the horrible DBZ dub, when hybrid DVDs are now being released (with rave reviews, I might add).
My point is merely that if the anime is available uncut commercially, it's pretty pathetic to complain about the TV version. Do we do this when mainstream movies get edited for network play? Of course not, we take three steps to Blockbuster.
That being said, however, it is worth noting that it is not necessarily the case that dubbed anime is less faithful to the original text than subtitled anime. [snip whoring]
Well, that's my fault, because I tend to group "subtitled" with "uncut". And I do agree with your essay for the most part; I wouldn't mind watching good dubs for lightweight shows like Ranma or Tenchi (both of which are pretty good dubs). But for something that I truly love, (Shoujo Kakumei Utena, at the moment), I'd be up in arms if it were only available dubbed, no matter how good the dub was.
Amazing, amazing anime! The DVD transfer is almost flawless, and the show even makes sense! To top it off, it's about bounty hunters in space! I'm going to order mine today. And speaking of anime that's just been released, the Rurouni Kenshin DVD's are out too!
I would also point out that the only reason amerika "won" is that they are better at brutality. In a contest of brutality, the most brutal wins... there's quote about that, but I don't recall it precisely.
Well, first of all, I was comparing nations, not continents or hemispheres; typically amerikan that the concept seems to have gone right over your head.Secondly, I'll "preach" any damn thing I please to amerika, or anyone else. Isn't that one of the values you so hypocritically mouth to your own citizens: Freedom of Speech?
You, as so many amerikans, apparently believe so strongly in your own righteousness that you feel you are immune to the moral contraints that are necesary to humanity. Amerika is the one trying to export their legislated "morality", their "let the kids see the brains get splattered but make sure everyone is fully clothed" idiocy.
Somalia. We don't want your 'bail-outs'. News flash, patriot boy: In countries that understand the use of language, US foriegn policy is quite accurrately called "imperialism", to wit It's hard to believe trogs like you still exist, with your 'might-makes-right', hyper-patriotic bullshit. Put your own house in order; the global community doesn't want your mess on their carpets. The real 3 things amerika does well: Violence, Puritanism, and Spin.
"The Internet is made of cats."
Fucked up shit does not a good cartoon make. You also state that "The stories are long, complicated ...and usually have one theme: love conquers all." Long, complicated stories do not a good story make, in and of themselves, regardless of what the theme is. You fail to make any convincing argument as to the virtue of anime.
I'm not saying that anime is crap, I'm just saying I fail to see what's so great about it. Just for the record I grew up in Taiwan where anime is the ONLY thing they show in what is the US equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons.
NO CARRIER
right on brother!
I like anime, but it isn't always the greatest thing. In my experience, the people that hate anime only hate it because they make their perception by what shows up on US TV:
Robotech (hacked version of three shows to tell a story that wasn't originally there)
Voltron (two shows in anthology)
StarBlazers (mildly hacked version of a Yamato TV show)
Sailor Moon (hey, this show was made with girls in mind, OK?)
DragonBall Z
Speed Racers
Pokemon
Digimon
If one is basing your opinion of all anime based on any one or more of these shows, you need to see what is really, out there, as this is hardly 1% of what is available. I have on numerous occasions changed someones' mind by loaning a few tapes from my collection. Granted, they don't all become fans, but at least it shows them that it isn't all crap, it is simply another form of entertainment.
And deud, lpease porof reda yoru writings.
The Tenchi Muyo series has been my absolute favorite anime/television show and to my dismay Cartoon Network **BUTCHERED** it. Cheezy painted on bathing suits, cuts of entire scenes, etc. I am just glad I can watch it on DVD :)

Tenchi is among my favorite anime series, but they'll definitely have to edit it for TV since there is the occasional nude scene.
What is with this country? we can't even show nude cartoons on tv, I don't understand why we can't show nude people on prime time. Is it really bad for children to see nudity? I think not, I've been to several European countries where they have nude gameshows on primetime, I don't think it warps the minds of children.
I dunno - I liked the old OAVs but I'm not terribly amazed about this. They _ought_ to be showing Cowboy Bebop (I recv'd disc three today - neener neener, Rob) although with better voices for Spike and Faye if it were dubbed.
At least I taped Reboot off of there back when I had cable. That was such a cool show once they finally got a good story arc going.
As for that episode of Dexter's Lab, yeah, that's easily the best parody of Speed Racer ever. It's in the same league as Mecha-Streisand is for Godzilla movies.

it was a pun. despite the fact that I dislike tenchi, I tend not to whine about what is posted, and what isn't :-)
Bad things often happen to good people,
It is up to them to see that they remain good.
That would be nice, but what would they put on there? I'm sure it would all be the dubbed versions, and I wouldn't be able to watch that. It's a real shame what American distributers do to Anime before releasing it here.
You could use the SAP audio track for the original Japanese audio.
The big problem with a dedicated anime channel is that you have to find a happy medium between what the HardCore fans want and what the more casual audiences want... Most casual fans want anime to be easily accessible, meaning dubs.. Most hardcore fans, like myself, prefer the original Japanese with English subtitles. A lot of people get very very rabid over that.
There is already a SAP audio track (normally used for Spanish and such) which can be used for the original Japanese audio.
Wait... did you hit the button twice, taco?

They are "editing it a little bit" for content. The Cartoon Network is a family channel and many parents would not like their kids seeing even cartoon nudity.
Now it's every night at 12 and saturday morning at 9(ish?).
SciFi shows them now and again, saturday/sunday afternoon.
The other day I saw Judge on IFC. Weird.

I don't think this is what they meant by alternate universe.
The message on the other side of this sig is false.
Right. Only Governments can censor. Since these corporations have control of Congress and the press, the corporate sector is a de facto government body, and its "editing" is really censorship. The fact that it has no constitutional basis is irrelevant.

Relax, man. No one is ranting. Most Americans think it's pretty stupid too. It's mostly a minority of puritanical prudes who think they need to uphold the rest our morals.
Really, it's not surprising that Americans are censoring all the anime's that come across from Japan. Japanese culture is quite different from ours, they are more open about nudity and sexuality. This is evidenced through the the public baths, as well as character relationships in various Anime. (many more lesbians & gays in anime than in american shows).
Anime isn't just meant for children in Japan. Yes, there are some anime shows for children (ie, Pokemon), but there are easily just as many for Adults or people inbetween.
Just another distinction between Japanese and American culture...
In America: someone from another country is called a foreigner. If that person knows our language, then they're (usually) called a tourist.
In Japan, someone from another country is called gaijin (foreigner). And someone from another country who bothers to learn they language and their customs, is called hanna gaijin (weird foreigner).
Note: the above is from memory... if I got it wrong, either wrong word, or wrong spelling, I appologize now.
Rob, please fix the bugs... Perhaps you need a second server setup to do upgrades on before moving the main server over? It's very wude to the rest of us.

Most anime would also be deemed too violent for the bland American youth of today (Who apparently can't even handle a Harry Potter story without wetting themselves.) I remember watching Anime in Okiniawa when I was 4 or 5 where scenes were depicted of people being impaled, which would make american censors squeal like a stuck pig.
Here ends the semi-rant.

Yup, anime chicks rock. I think the attraction is along the same lines a Laura Croft. And those soft porno anime (Goku Midnight Eye, Wicked City, ect...) are good enough to make people think twice about thinking of anime as just a cartoon.

Hey man,,, tenchi has been on cartoon network for a couple of weeks. And the third cowboy bebop was released on the 4th of July. Get up to date buddy.
I'd suggest Washu - from the OVA - with her glasses on ... that picture just screams slashdot (well, to me at least - LOL!).
I second that. Washu rules. Always liked the geeks in TV.

Any way you group culture, 90% of it is garbage, and another 9% are only for the hardcore fan. What you have here is a board full of hardcore fans, and, well...you.
Seriously, if you have the time, read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. Not only is it a great read, it goes into what makes Japanese comics different than American ones, a difference that carries over into animation. The average work of anime is much more sophisticated visually than its average American counterpart. This includes works in all genres. They demand much more of the viewer's attention visually and slightly more plot-wise.
Most people who like anime are spoiled after watching great work like Vampire Princess Miyu (horror), Ranma 1/2 (comedy), Miyazaki, etc...
Many people who dislike anime are really thinking of the garbage we were exposed to as kids (though I always liked Star Blazers... nothing to compare it to at age 4). Artless, poorly translated, badly dubbed, hacked to pieces, how could anyone expect us to develop an appreciation for it?
It's amazing some of us did, and unlike the vicious and stupid way we tend to circle the wagons around linux, those of us who love anime like nothing better than sharing what we like.
The only real answer I can give your question is: Look at the early 90s Conan-era Simpsons, and understand that a lot of that was being done TEN YEARS EARLIER in Japan. The show Urusei Yatsura is still a tough sell to people who saw the original artist's somewhat more intricate later Ranma 1/2 series, but the interplay between both multiple joke "threads" and between those "threads" and the spoken/acted/background-derived punchlines was way ahead of its time in an otherwise innocuous sitcom. Certain aspects of modern anime remain ten years ahead of american productions, in the same way modern american film productions look ten years ahead of films from most other countries.
On top of all that, remember this: the anime we're sitting here talking about now (what's "new to us") was shown in Japan years ago. The modern american otaku (like me) has only the smallest awareness of what the real breadth of Japanese animation looks like today, so we lose both the stuff that's so bad it doesn't come across and some of the hidden gems, which we can only conjecture exists based on past experience with the exported art of other cultures. We see only the top 5% of what comes over, so everything looks good to us. Well, almost everything, DBZ kind of sucks, visually.

Despite the censorship, this is a classic anime and it will be interesting to see the response it gets from traditional early teen Cartoon Network style audiences.
:-> Yeah, like that would ever happen.
I will wait and see before passing judgement but I really want to see a network grow some balls and put Cowboy Bebop on prime time. That would rock!

I think that my subject says it all. Tenchi has been playing for a while on the Toon Network.
How is it that Mr. Taco is just finding this out now?
> I figure somewhat censored anime is better then > none at all WRONG! christian holocaust NOW
*sigh*. I'm trying hard to ignore your multiple spelling and grammatical errors. If you don't want to watch censored anime, buy the damn DVDs/subbed VHS!
Tenchi has been out commercially for a while now, so it's not like watching the dub on TV is your only option.
Gundam W has subbed/uncut DVD.
DBZ is starting to release subbed/uncut DVD.
Sailor Moon...well... I suppose you could bitch about that, but it's not like fansubs are hard to find.
But don't waste your breath on Tenchi.
I don't know who you guys really are. Rob have done something wrong, but it's now fixed. Just stop complaining! Anime is pretty cool and I simply love it. You can taste some Anime on the Cartoon Network channel but there are several fansubs that made these animes avaible to everybody, subtitled and original, so you can buy the tapes from them. Also, you could pick some stuff on IRC channels.
:/ Anyway, the CN will not stop with it.
Tenshi is a very good Anime and the nudity isn't a big deal. Edited Animes are really bad, I don't like the idea of cutting parts from them... This sucks and must stop
BTW, if you don't like anime, please shut up.
Truthfully, I think an anime-only channel should definitely go in the works, not just from CN, but from anyone. It makes economic sense currently, because out of all the film/video industry, I believe that Anime has been growing the fastest. (This is judging from the size of section at video stores and such...) And thanks to CN, even with the censoring, there are more people being exposed to anime. It's becoming more and more feasible for a cable network to start up that could make money and satisfy a want of so many of us. So, to those of you with the money and know-how, here's your opportunity! Just make sure that you leave them uncensored!
What needs to come along is a channel clued in enought to realize Anime aren't cartoons, and are being targeted to adults just as much as kids. If they had the attitude that "this show is meant for young adults and their parents, not little children," then things would be way better.
Here's my DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?
Here's my DeCSS mirror, where's yours?
The thing that really sets anime apart from most programming is the fact that many series take the time to tell a single story as opposed to more mainstream shows that take fairly thin story premises, tosses their characters into them and then after 30 or 60 minutes, resets everything back to how they were at the beginning of the episode. Star Trek is one of the great examples of this style of TV show creation where something catastrophic happens nearly every episode but nothing permanently bad ever happens to anyone (unless you're a red-shirted ensign) and events seem to have little to no effect on the characters involved.
On the other side we have anime where in many cases, an entire series is built on the telling of a single story. As opposed to the episodic nature of mainstream shows which are self-contained (and easily shuffleable for syndication purposes), episodes in a good series all work towards advancing the story. This focus on a single plotline allows for other aspects of plain old good storytelling to occur; character growth and character relationships. In good anime, characters change and grow, go against what we assume they would normally do, and often become completely different characters by the end of the series. A single plotline also allows for character relationships to be more fully explored, created and changed.
This all comes down to anime being much more dynamic than mainstream series. In the US, a lot of TV programming seems to be focused on a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. If the execs find a group of characters that the public likes, they generally keep them the same throughout the show so not to alienate viewers and everything is built around keeping everything the same but creating the illusion that things are different. Good anime series rely on change; that things won't necessarily be the same from one episode to the next and people watch to see what happens next.
Yeah, it's probably not the most cohesive argument in the world but it's the best I can come up quickly.
First of all, Tenchi has been on for a while, and was heavily advertised even before that. Second, it has been extensively airbrushed, censored, and some of the dialogue was re-written. Personally, given the skittish nature of most TV censors, I'm surprised that they left Ryoko as a character... Does anyone know just how many episodes Toonami will carry? Some clips seemed to carry footage from more than one Tenchi series. This might still be an interesting story, albeit a week or two late.
Wow. Two posts in two days... all for my favorite little series. First off all, below this is the FAQ as it currently stands. Second, here is the status of the long sought third OVA.
First of all, Tenchi is actually 13 different stories that have the same characters. The story types change from series to series. The OVA series (what is airing right now) is a bit of epic fantasy, sci-fi with sorta family dynamics, the next series that airs (Tenchi Universe or TV) is much more romantic, while Shin Tenchi (Tenchi in Tokyo) is just plain weird and bad.
I talked to Hiroki Hayashi (One of the co-creators of Tenchi Muyo) last week, and he said that AIC is committed to a new series, but director etc has not been picked yet. Masaki Kajishima (the other co-creator) will probibly be it. The only thing we know for sure, is that Hiroshi Negishi (the man who directed the TV series) will not be directing it.
Hiroki Hayashi will be at Nan-Desu-Kon this year. This is a _awesome_ con that takes place in colorado every year. Last year it was one of the best Conventions in the USA with a much better atmosphere then AX (Look at how big we are) and Otakon. He really is a nice guy, and it will be a lot of fun. More info here.
Anyways, here is Tenchi FAQ (REALLY REALLY BIG). As one huge document. Sorry, it is in word, have not had time to do a proper conversion on it.
Here it is . Spoilers be here . (People who read the FAQ last week, the novels section has been updated.
The creators of Tenchi Muyo have gone on to create other great series, such as Sol Bianca, Photon, Dual, El-Hazard, BGC 2040 and many other series.
Please don't bitch about the fact that it is in microsoft word. My linux box needs a new drive.
I forgot to mention. I am looking for a site that will let me host a automated version of this. I may get a new page this afternoon, but I need hosting recomendations. Any takers? I will probibly install fAQ-o-matic for this.....
Yeah... you've missed quite a few episodes by this point, and it's not going to make much sense if you don't see the first few.
I've got them all DivX'd, though... if only I wasn't afraid of lawsuits.
Okay, lets make the icon a pic of Sailor Moon. One of the worst playing animes out there . But, for some reason, I have to see it through. Perhaps I am a bit masochistic in that sense...

I have watched w/ some interest the cuts that CN has made. The feeling among the veterans is that it could be worse. I do shudder a bit what will happen with Tenchi OVA 13 which is quite amusing w/ regards to the fact that the Emperor has two wives (they removed the hint from OVA 5), but for the most part only Ryouko has taken a hit.
Of course, the funny thing is that she seems much more caring and almost parental now, instead of over-sexed. I imagine that she will have a lot more fans now.
At least he has a +1 bonus to abuse. Perhaps if you weren't an Anonymous Coward, someone might care what you think.
It could be said that Tenchi OAV appeals to the "geek nature." Many hidden features and silent plot points make it a story to be STUDIED as well as enjoyed. This is, among other reasons, why I enjoy Tenchi OAV over either TV season.
Some of the finer points listed here:
- Isn't it interesting that at the end of the first OAV in Tenchi's house we have:
- Sasami: Join with Tsunami(read: goddess) the source of the wonderful power that has made Jurai the largest space faring empire around.
- Mihoshi: Grandaughter to the Galaxy Police High Marshal(read: big wig) who either seems to be either the luckiest person in the galaxy or the most intelegent by faking being silly. ^_^
- Washu: Supposedly the smartest genius in the galaxy(whos only foil is Mihoshi ^_^). At least smart enough to "create" Ryoko and Ryo-ohki who are compariable to anything Jurai has to offer. Maybe has a past with Tsunami...maybe even like Sasami(ie. assimilated)!
- Aeka: The Crown Princess of Jurai: the most powerful empire in the galaxy. Enuf said. ^_^
- Ryoko: One the of the most mysterious and powerful things walking around on two legs. Only surpassed by...
- Tenchi: Has displayed powers on the level most star ships can't generate. Quite possibly the next ruler of Jurai...if he isn't careful. ^_^
So it is quite possible that assembled under one roof on Earth the future power holders of the galaxy if not already the most powerful people ever born. Coincidence? Maybe. ^_^
- Of course all of this would have been for nothing if Yosho hadn't left Jurai in the first place. Why did Yosho leave Jurai in the first place? He says he couldn't handle the predjudice because he was half human but subtilites point to more. Did Tsunami coax him to go?
- I've always thought the relationship between Ryoko and Washu would be an excellent subject to go over in a 3rd OAV.
- Of course one can not ignore the hints suggesting that Ryoko isn't the only child of Washu. Who could the other child be? Maybe its....no...its too silly to say. ^_^
- The "technology" in Tenchi is interesting too. Jurai technology is very organic where verything appears to be made of their trees(weapons, ships, etc.). Washu's technology appears to be based on crystals. Yet their power seems to work together. This supports the idea that Washu and Tsunami are even closer than any one expected.
- The Avatar Theory: Tsunami seems to have two sisters? What are they up too? What is Tsunami up too? Why bother "promoting" Jurai? The Avatar Theory is a theory that says that Tsunami is trying to "foster" an Avatar: someone from this universe that can wield their power since it seems that "assimilation" may restrict her power in this universe(if you look at Washu for comparison...assuming she is who we think she is ^_^). Washu may have Ryoko. Tsunami may have Tenchi. Tokimi has....well that is what I'm hoping is revealed in a 3rd OAV. ^_^
Some people say that the OAVs are overly complicated compared to the TV series. I instead say that the TV series dumb things way down. I revel in the insanity of the OAV story that seems to have reason if you look close enough(or maybe I'm just seeing things ^_^). In any event, I enjoy just considering the possiblities in this story much more than any story that has come along. This is why I'm very excited about a 3rd Tenchi OAV with Kajishima writing the story again.
If you can make it more than halfway through Neon Genesis Evangelion (hell, if you can watch an entire season of subtitled Sailor Moon) I defy you to say that again.
The stories are long, complicated (for a cartoon anyway) and usually have one theme: love conquers all. Except in Eva. Nobody knows wtf *that* was all about. Turn everybody into orange juice and strangle the only other person on the planet. F*cked up sh*t right there.
Is this post not nifty? Sluggy Freelance. Worshi
why is an all-mighty broadcasting company, which is solely responsible to the shareholders, just editing a little bit? effectively, thats much worse censorship than when the elected representatives of the people would pass a constitutional law which bans overdone display of violence in kids computer games. maybe you are right technically: i may still get the full version of a film in the stores. but in reality, AOL/Time-kind of companies have more power to decide what we see, and less restraints to do that, than elected governments. editing is effective censorship.
... it's still not enough. It's unfortunate that they have to censor something as lightweight as Tenchi. Hopefully it will be done thoughtfully, and not butcher the series like Dragonball, the American version of which has been reduced to complete cack.
What we need is one of two things. The first, a privately-owned anime cable network (probably stuck into cable networks as a 'premium' channel), is not going to happen for a long time; the market is just not there to justify the outlay of capital, and production capacities are still not high enough to deal with 24/7 broadcasting without significant percentages of reruns. And then there's that sticky "licensing" thing... @_@
The second option, for networks to pick up some series with content that would not require censorship and yet still provide enough entertainment value to attract audiences across the age ranges, is unlikely, but easier. I'm talking about comedy series like Slayers (yay!), or adventure series like Escaflowne. There's still the licensing issue, but if you factor in the fact that they won't have to pay anyone to edit "objectionable" material out of the tapes, then it probably would come up attractive in terms of advertising profits. Maybe an e-mail or dead-tree-letter or two might open their eyes to this.
Of course, it'll be a long while before anyone's able to show something as moderately risque as Knights of Ramune on American TV, but every step counts.
Undoubtedly, Tenchi is good anime, but everyone knows that the best anime ever has got to be Neon Genesis Evangelion because it has all the elements of a great entertainment experience: comedy, action, violence, sex, drama, technology, mystery, and a great ending. Why did Cartoon Network pick Tenchi? Maybe because Tenchi is more aimed at a younger audience than NGE, which is for a mature audience. Therefore, for all you older people out there, I reccomend you watch Evangelion in addition to Tenchi. The censorship of Tenchi is not wrong at all, nudity is not something that should be regularly shown to a kid who usually watches Tom and Jerry. "Mommy, mommy, what is that?" All you tenchi fans, watch eva instead! "Procrastination and masturbation are the same. It feels good until you realize you are screwing yourself." -Anon

Cartoon network is a cable channel, they could get away with way more than what they do. With that in mind, I don't think they necessarily want everything editted like nuts, thats just the way it is. If you want less editting on the cartoon, complain to the company doing the dubs, not CN.
Regarding Reboot on the Toonami lineup, I recently was happy to notice that A.D. Vision will be publishing the Reboot and Shadow Raiders series on CD (see here at 07-05-2000 Resistance is Futile). They must have licenced them from Mainframe. A.D. Vision is a big publisher of Anime videos.
I may even have been partly responsible. At the 1999 V-Con, I talked to Adria Budd, who worked on a number of the Reboot Season 2 & 3 scripts and was executive assistant to either Ian Pearson or Gavin Blair (I forget which). She was also the modeler's inspiration for the adult Andraia. Anyways, I asked if there were any plans for releasing Reboot on DVD and she said there weren't. I suggested Mainframe might want to check out Anime producers like AnimEigo or A.D. Vision because:
- There's a fair amount of overlap between Reboot and Anime fandom
- North American anime publishers are used to licensing and redistributing properties that have been developed by third parties for television distribution.
Thus for a minimal risk, they could licence the property, make some cash on a property that isn't as fresh as it was a few years ago, keep viewer mindshare, and promote Mainframe Productions by keeping the product in the market. If the added revenue and publicity was significant, it may even have helped produce financing for the made-for-tv movies that are in the offing. Perhaps A.D. Vision has options on the istribution rights for them as well? Well maybe that's a stretch. Anyways, you can't beat more Reboot!Laissez lire, et laissez danser; ces deux amusements ne feront jamais de mal au monde. - Voltaire
Duh, I meant Reboot on DVD of course. Ironically, I was kicking myself for getting up too late to have been able to bid on the full set of Reboot season 3 tapes they had for the VCon 2? charity auction - the tapes had been duplicated from the masters (perhaps network distribution quality?). I'll manage to console myself with a Reboot DVD collection since I care more about the quality of the reproduction than about how collectible it would have been. Besides, for the latter, I have a small Reboot Season 3 (adult Matrix & Andraia) poster signed by Adria Budd :-)

Sweet... I would love to get a complete set of Reboot episodes (and the upcoming movie too) on DVD. The only thing cooler would be the Utterly Definitive Edition of The Wizard of Speed and Time.

Which is, IMHO, Fox's answer to WB's Cardcaptors (Card Captor Sakura), similar to what they did last year when they brought DigiMon and Monster Rancher to compete with WB's PokeMon. Now it remains to be seen (and heard) wether they'll do a good english rendition of Escaflowne's original Opening Song, Yakusoku wa Iranai, or if they'll destroy it, along with all the sound effects like Nelvana did with Cardcaptors.
I'm so tired I haven't slept a wink. I'm so tired my mind is on the brink. I wonder if I should get up and fix myself
I agree with this post.
Really, I do.
That said, I think it's time I changed my

I haven't suggested that he tape an episode for me to watch later... I don't watch much TV these days.

Huh, the "nudity" in Tenchi Muyo censored?
You've got to be kidding, that would be the most pointless and brainless snip in the history of censorship.
Ryoko is an alien demon (actually, she was manufactured by Washu, the "Greatest Scientist in the Universe", so I suppose that makes her some kind of construct), and she doesn't understand the first thing about human inhibitions about anything, so when she strips off in the pool it's about as innocent as it comes. Cinematographically it's for its effect on Ayeka and Tenchi, and the result is absolutely hilarious.
There is absolutely nothing to censor here. There is no sex (needless to say), nothing remotely provocative, and certainly no sleeze of any kind. There's just some bare (cartoon-style) featureless skin, and that in the context of a demon that is not only non-human but not even really physical in the normal sense (ie. flies right through matter).
Are the censors in the US completely off their collective rockers?

Censorship is when the government forbids the spread of certain information. It's not when a company cuts out a few scenes from a cartoon so they can be broadcast it on TV.
It does appear now that there enough Slashdot authors interested in posting Anime news that they should make an Anime Topic. If Slashdot does decide to go for it, use Anipike, EX, and A Fan's View for useful URLs. ^_^
EX right now is running a feature on BONES, the production house that brought out fine works like ESCAFLOWNE and COWBOY BEBOP. Cover art done by Kawamoto himself! ^_^
I like the interest in Anime you guys are showing. Please keep it up!

I can't tell if this is a troll, or a very sophisticated pun.
For those who don't know... "no need for Tenchi" is one
of the translated titles for the first series of Tenchi Muyo.
The title might also be translated as "This Side Up,Tenchi"
because of another play on words in the series; that the
kanji for the main characters name is also used on
packing crates to indicate which side is up...
(This is based on what more hardcore fans have told me)
Slashdot needs an Anime subject heading instead of just lumping all the anime news in with entertainment news. I like the coverage, but there are quite a few people out there who would like to opt out of the coverage, just like they opt out of other subjects.

When I poliely ( ;-) ) asked what was up, I received a confession from Patrick Lenz that he, "hit 'approve' instead of 'reject' on that pending message within the moderation system".
Then, today, /. reposts the the same story ttwwiiccee on the front page.
That's the problem with those "clickity-click" interfaces...it's easy to mis-click and double-clickclick.

At least in Germany the Cartoon Network Channel is encrypted most times (or something is wrong with my satellite dish).
And *now* they actually start broadcasting cool things instead of the 1001st rerun of [insert your least favourite series here].
Hmm..., maybe if I put a TV card in my PC and download this nifty little - huh, where did that ferret come from?

Personally, I'd like to see more anime on TV in the form of TV shows and movies. I like the Macross and Teknoman series but I'd like to see more series like Tenchi. I also love the movies like The Guyver, Akira and Riding Bean. Also, what are the chances of the Cartoon Network showing the Gunsmith Cats mini-series one night? Now *that* would be something...

Bullshit. The phenomenon you describe is certainly a factor, but some anime is easily as complex and deep as any real life movie or TV series you could name. Many people like anime for its intelligent stories and characters.

Seriously, though. I don't understand the infatuation that some people have with anime. Granted, there are some productions that really are classic (most notably Miyazaki's work; the animation is truly artful), but at some point it becomes just more of the same stuff; sci-fi, sex, and violence. Hmm, I may have just answered my own question there :). Nonetheless, lots of the anime I have seen on and off over the years seem to be quite similar. The characters all have the basically the same "design", i.e. big teary eyes and large breasts in skimpy costumes if they are women and spiked hair wielding big guns/mobile armor/$FAVORITE_WEAPON if they are men. The themes are all pretty similar (overblown comedies with strong sexual overtones or extremely violent science fiction/fantasy). I don't want to sound like I'm flaming, it's just that for me personally it's mildly entertaining at best, while it seems to me there exists out there a rabid diehard fandom. What's the "thing" that makes anime so popular?
As for me, I'll stick with the Tom and Jerry show on Cartoon Network. As Calvin used to say, "Falling anvils and explosions, now THAT'S entertainment!".
NO CARRIER
Why? hmm.. greed? :) and the fact that most anime is bought by Disney (yes, another dark secret they don't tell you) and then licensed to the anime companies.
That last bit about Disney is utter bullshit. Disney does own the rights to most of Studio Ghibli's titles (Nausicaa, Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service), but nothing else. The anime companies get their licenses direct from the producers in Japan. Hell, some of the companies now distributing anime are nothing more than US arms of the Japanese companies (Pioneer, Bandai), while others have gone so far as to co-produce anime with the Japanese (ADV Films, Manga Entertainment).
I have to wonder where you people come up with this stuff sometimes. ^_^

OTAKON 2000: Convention of Otaku Generation
August 4-5-6, 2000 at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, MD
I've built up so much character I have an alter-ego
yeah, like your horrible spelling?
Planning to be moderated ± 1: Bad Pun.
Expect to see much more anime on thier channel. CN != SF
The cartoon network has already contracted to finish the Dragon Ball Z
series as the dubs become available. They still have the OAVs of
Gundam Wing to yet show (and yes, they did aquire the rights for those).
Gundam Wing, during its initial showing, was the highest rated show, in
the highest rated timeslot (Toonami) for the entire network.
The Sci-fi channel screwed themselves over on that one. Bad timeslots, some
bad shows/movies, and recycling too much without trying to hype/introduce
new material. Also they lost focus by trying to cram it all into special
events ("Anime-week"), instead of treating it at least as a separate genre.
As much as I like SCIFI, they don't always make very good programming decisions.
Kids WB has fared well with Pokemon, and now Card Captors (Card Captor Sakura)
Fox has followed suit with Digimon and Monster Rancher, and is trying to
bring Escaflowne to the Fox Family Channel (which may be a mistake for other
reasons). A lot of other corporate entities seem to this
BTW: Sci-fi still have the rights to the "Slayers" series, so don't count
them out yet either- they may have just gotten in before the industry was
really heating up on anime.
Other than Miyazaki's works, you can't name any anime that has been liscensed
for Buena Vista (not Disney corporate!) to bring over. Or are you now
claiming that Disney is behind the "anime is animate porn" sterotype?
Who would pay for a premium cable channel that showed nothing but uncensored anime 24/7, commercial-free?
Let's see:
- somewhat extorted...
- some years in concentration camp...
- some murdered men...
- etc.
And at the end you'll wonder where it all started ("it" being the loss of your rights). If you are willing to fight for free speech in only a few cases, then be prepared to have no free speech at all. If you are giving up some of your rights, where will you draw the line? Is entertainment so sweet that you will let the government control it?"To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." -- Tennyson
It's a great chance to really tell a story over 26 episodes, without as many morally highground arguments ("Sailor Moon says eat your veggies, and volunteer to help old people across the street") Things aren't really black or white.
Anyways, one piece of news. Vision of Escaflowne is supposedly coming to Fox Kids this fall. A truly excellent anime series, which is one of the few that you don't suspect the lead woman of doing adult films at night to pay the bills. Don't know how they'll change it, but a great story. Don't want to spoil it.
Did the cartoon network just turn into the news? ;-) U2 ROCKS!!!

In both of these discussions, I noticed comments that had been posted in one had also been posted in the other. I thought it might have been a lack of caffine and sleep, but this raises a lot of questions. Does anyone know if this could be a Slashcode problem or a problem with the MySQL server?
In the mean time, it is good to know that my RealityServer(tm) is working fine.

It seems that more and more Anime title are beign accepted into the American mainstream. While I do like to see this, I am worried about how people are going to be affected by all the English dubbing. There have always been pros and cons with subtitles and English dubbing, but I truly didn't feel the impact of this until this recent year when I joined the Anime Club at my college. Luckily Tenchi's dub is one of the better ones I have heard, however this is not the case. For those of you watching Tenchi on the Cartoon Network, you've probably also seen clips of Gundam Wing, if not the series. About five months before the Cartoon network started airing Gundam we were watching the subbed version in the club. Well, I can say this much. The voices just do not seem to match the character's .. and some of the characters don't even act the same. At this point I am ignoring how overboard the censorship went for the episodes shown at 5:30 on the channel. (i.e. changing "I will kill you" to "I will destroy you" to be a kinder and gentler space mercinary) This has particularly frightened me now that Rurouni Kenshin has been licensed in the US. To many people Kenshin is as popular as Tenchi and Fushigi Yuugi, however, there was a small distribution of test dubs to small stations a few months ago unde the title "Samurai X." I have seen some clips of this and the voices were horrifing. I know there are many people who would rather have dubs then subs, so ... I am wondering... if an anime channel is made, which there has been talk about, wouldn't it be an interesting idea if the closed caption transmitied the subtitles and the spanish audio channel transmited the japanese version of the soundtrack? I am not sure how viable this is ... but I would certainly like to see this. And now a shameless plug as we are always seeking memebers JHAC
Code softly but carry a big magnet.
I like Tenchi 'n all, but everyone's only bringing in the less mature anime that's targeted at a younger audience. With Fox and WB, it was Technoman, Pokemon, Digimon, *mon, and now Card Capture Sakura, and with Cartoon Network, it's ancient stuff like Speed Racer and Voltron, and some popular stuff like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, and now Tenchi. What I want is a Toonami that's closer to what's played in the Sci-Fi channel than Fox...with stuff like Akira etc.
My predictions for next anime series to come: Slayers. Now my question is, when will Neon Gensis Evangelion come to TV? And when it does, they better create a ton of publicity prior...
I was just wondering.. why would they edit a series/show/movie to be suitable for kids if it was never _meant_ to be watched by kids? Isn't this a gigantic insult to the creators of the series? Like, you made a pretty cool movie, but we don't think adults would like it, so we'll just cut the thing up and turn it into a (terrible in most cases) kiddieshow.. yech! Disrespect to the editors!

Is this post not nifty? Sluggy Freelance. Worshi
I think it's more of a case of people thinking Animated == for children. If it's a kids show, I would agree with the censoring--but most times its not, and trying to hack up the show in order for it to be suitable for kids is just wrong. Anime accounts for over 55% of television in Japan; it's not just for kids.
