"A new year... A new hope?" "Let us know your predictions for 2009".
And, right on par with my hope of seeing Half-Life 2 Episode 3 in "early 2009", my hope of seeing a fully working, easy to set up and maintain, "it just works" Active Directory server for Linux this year has diminished due to the fact that this same exact story was posted here over 3 years ago. (or on Digg)
Says a Google search. Looking at some of the videos that were censored, a LOT of them had a few seconds of a Warner song in them. So they went far beyond removing JUST those "music videos" or "CD tracks".
Some of the videos I noticed have been disabled:
* Numerous AMV videos
* Video game demos and clips
* Several videos by stand-up comedian George Carlin (WTF?)
* Some videos about global warming
* World of Warcraft videos
* Live recordings of music artists from the 1960's through today.
So they removed videos that were perfectly within fair use, simply using a small snippet of a song. I guess this is the end of fair use...
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Unconstitutional. Therefor, yet another fine example of where our tax money goes.
What a wonderful idea you have there, Congressman! Let's have the warning read:
"WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."[citation needed]
So... planning on citing a source on the warning label, or are you just going to blatantly declare that a massive medical or psychological study, conducted by a prestigious, well-known scientific organization, reached the peer-accepted consensus that "Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior." exists?
Protip for Washington: Such a medical study does NOT exist. Ever. NO STUDY HAS EVER FOUND A CONCLUSIVE LINK BETWEEN VIOLENT MEDIA AND AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR.
I wonder how the shoe would feel on the other foot (a similar bill, targeted at the movie industry?)
We have no need for these shitty things anymore. We're paying over $15 a month JUST FOR these HDTV cable boxes, and guess what? THEY DON'T WORK.
Half of the HD channels we are supposed to have fail to come in properly. (I suspect it's due to Concast's horrible compression ratios), so we're paying $15 a month, PLUS the charges for HD service, for poor quality, horribly compressed, hardly ever works HDTV.
I'd like to see another lawsuit concerning this...
I just torrent all of the TV shows I watch, copy them to my PS3, and watch them in HD anyway, so yeah.
Your on to something, I've noticed a HUGE lack of failed attempts to send spam e-mail through my server over the past few days. Usually, about 20-40 connections show up in/var/log/mail.log from hosts in Taiwan, attempting to send spam e-mail. Oddly enough, aside from a few typical failed script kiddie attacks (in the US), I see only 3 or 4 connections from hosts in Taiwan.
So I guess THIS is what the RIAA meant when they said they would get ISP's to agree to start cutting off user's Internet access rather than suing millions of people...
... and we're going to quit while we're ahread!", is what i see. The RIAA knew this tactic would fail, but in the end, they profited. How many millions of dollars have they stolen from innocent people?
In the end, rather than continue profiteering, they decided to quit BEFORE they get owned in court and loose everything...
Something else that made me lol in the article: "Over the summer, New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo began brokering an agreement between the recording industry and the ISPs that would address both sides' piracy concerns. "We wanted to end the litigation," said Steven Cohen, Mr. Cuomo's chief of staff. "It's not helpful."
Yes, Mr. Cuomo, it's called: 1. Tax music downloads, punish legitimate users while not affecting piracy 2. See a substantial increase in music piracy in the state of NY. 3. ??? 4. PROFIT!
We'd all be screwed if someone patented "A system and method of natural cellular respiration to sustain life", or the equation... They could collect money from every living orginism on Earth every time an orginism breaths!
There are (somewhat) restrictions on patents relating to biological entities and processes, but they found a legal loophole before (All those patents on our DNA)...
Why don't I patent all of the logical operators used on most modern programming languages, including ==, !=, &&, ||, etc. Gee, I could sue EVERY major software company, even Microsoft, for infringing my copyrights! I could be R$CH!
I see this on almost every TV channel now. On the NON-HD channel (2, 4, 5, 7, etc) they say "Your watching this channel in HD", and even have the word "HD" embedded into the channel's logo. I can see how this confusion happens.
By launching criminal charges against anyone who posts on 4chan's/b/ board for using the pseudonym "Anonymous" on their posts, and sending us all to jail?
I don't think this is a good idea at ALL. I agree with gaming, but allowing kids to use social networking websites??? That sounds bad. Very bad.
There goes the REAL computer geek generation, I guess. Now all the kids will be on MySpace for hours making their profiles look pretty by jamming so many random CSS stylesheets and Flash music players that automatically play at full blast (most of whom probably don't even know what "CSS" stands for)...
MySpace has to be one of the most horrible websites out there - from it's horrible "Security", to the bloated advertisements taking up over half of every page. And this study recommends these sites for kids...
Web 2.0 took intelligence out of using the Internet. Gone are the days where you needed to KNOW something about computers to make websites or post content to the Internet. Now ANYONE can make a MySpace profile or blog....
"Geek" subcultures are becoming too mainstream...

Millions of people use Web 2.0 based sites, like MySpace. Usually, they know nothing about computers, which is why they rely on poorly designed CSS stylesheets and automatic site generators that do nothing but lag the Web browser.
Most people play console games, not PC games. Console gaming, thanks to Microsoft and Nintendo, has gone mainstream. I only know a few people who play PC games and have decent gaming PCs. The rest have Xbox 360s and think "PC gaming SUCKS!"
So the advertising system on Slashdot, which (I would assume) displays ads in context to the text on the page, is showing me ads saying "Dis OBAMA Buy The Election? Make your voice heard!"... Is this trying to tell me something?

Wouldn't you go completly insane if you use a Microsoft product every day of your life?
So it's Microsoft's fault, for making shitty, overhyped, annoying software and hardware that make people go insane from using!

One of the links doesn't work, gives an HTTP 404 error.

Breaking News: New York State, in light of a recent surge of RIAA lawsuits, tax copyright infringement cases. Details at 11!
I hope they eventually get Wine working for the PowerPC processors, so I can run some Windows only programs on my PS3...
I see "mp3" and "free movies" several times on that list... gee, sure hope the MPAA and/or the RIAA don't see this list!

I noticed this within the first hour after the demo came out while adjusting the configuration files.
However, I was more surprised with the file:
C:\Program files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\left 4 dead demo\left4dead\cfg\splitscreen_on.cfg:
I thought "WTF!? Splitscreen on the PC???". Doesn't do much, since it's disabled, but it's worth pointing out.

... because I don't have a 360. It's pathedic that they made this DLC ONLY for the 360 and not the PS3.

Any wild and crazy conspiracy theories on this election? Or will this be the first election in 8 years where it seems that the winner won fairly...
