I like what you say, but GPL is like a one way trap, or a black hole. Once you enter it, you are sucked into it forever.

I can understand both opinions here, including Linus's frustrations. I think he feels like he's slipping into a one way trap and loosing his control.

Stallman, really bugs me in some ways. He reminds me of the Prophet Mohammad too much. I stand can't him getting the credit for so many other peoples hard work. With his name at the top of the FSF. Juck, so cheesy!

    That's why I prefer BSD.

Come to think of it, after reading all this. A simple BSD style licence with a patent clause would be great in these current times. There is no evidence to say we need a GPL licence for open source projects to succeed. I think most programmers don't understand it properly and are just being sucked into it.

Simple is much more elegant and to the precise point.

    The solution must be simple.

So it is going to be a very good day indeed :)

I can't wait to see the reviews of the iPhone.

But most importantly, can anyone say when GPL3 will start to have an effect on the "Microsoft - Novell" deal?

At the very most, it may have a little share.

In all honesty, we shall have to wait until silverlight can prove itself, I don't want try detailed predictions. But, I am expecting it to be a flop. As many others have said so here.

I don't think many web developers really trust Microsoft, they have played too many tricks with the Internet over the years. MS basically have a bad reputation, and that is the biggest problem for Silverlight adoption amongst web developers.

It's almost as if the word "Microsoft" == "Proprietary".

They have a huge challenge on their hands to win hearts and minds, if they expect people to come and embrace their technologies, when they are not "forced" to do so.

If Silverlight was going to be big, it would be out and about in beta form and used by many websites by now.

I'm absolutely sure Silverlight it nothing to worry about. Just let it pass and die out. Or just let MS flog it like at a dead horse.

I advise not to get involved with developing it. If you do, MS will only release a newer and updated version for you to "hack". Such a waste of time!

XP works alright with everything, no driver problems at all. But Vista is a joke, no word of a lie. There is no way I can use it with all the problems it has. Too many to list here. But here are a few:

      - When I close the lid, I loose the screen.
      - Video camera does not work, I install the utility and it is nowhere to be found.
      - Faulty start menu when installing apps (empty folders, no shortcuts).
      - Jerky 3D graphics on the desktop.
      - No proper touchpad drivers.
      - Wifi crashes on startup, every time. Need to disconnect and reconnect.
      - Lack of media applications, like Blu-Ray, which was present in XP.
      - And there are many more problems and issues...

Vista reminds me of Win98 which was really bad, then they released Win98 SE which fixed a lot of things. Then they released Win Me which was a disaster.

Therefore, they have gotten away with it in the past. But that was then, now it is very big fact that Linux is becoming more viable every day.

There is nothing they can do to stop the progress of Linux. They can try and drive it underground at the very best, but that will just make it more exciting.

The more they threaten legal action with patents, the more they will make an arse of themselves. Driving more people away from them. Not the funky old Microsoft that once played the Rolling Stones music. They can't offer that anymore.

They are coming up to a brick wall with Windows, there is not much more they can do except provide better driver support. And Vista has been a bit of a disaster for them in terms of decent drivers. So they must be dismayed at the moment.

In the long term, they don't have a future, they are just desperately clinging to a monopoly and that is all their business has been based on. And because of this, it is very difficult to turn around into something legitimate. They are just a big hole that is beginning to cave in! And yes, they deserve it, cause they have been too devious for too long and got away with it.

The desktop metaphor is finite and Microsoft probably reached it peak with XP, now Linux is here to provide value for money and freedom!

I also think it is such a shame that such a large company has been directed in such a devious manner over the years. Microsoft could of been so good, but it chose not to. That is not good for it's employees.
